There's manga about cooking, baseball, wine-tasting, horticulture, ice-cream (it was a hentai about a ice-cream stand, but ya know).

So, why are comics still the best in the world?
>>
Manga costs less to make, easier to get new stuff out there.
>>
Blame the terrible taste of comic readers.
>>
>>89871423
Because baseball, wine-tasting, horticulture, and ice cream(that you can't eat) are boring.
>>
Japan isn't the west, the arts are focused on much different things. Japan's TV and film industry are the exact opposite of the US' regarding quality and variety.
>>
>>89871540
A subject is as entertaining as the writer makes it. A series about watching paint dry could be entertaining if the writer is good enough.
>>
>>89871423
Low sales = less room for risk.

>>89871590
You're an idiot. Content matters. Shit is shit, no matter who writes it.

The comics code effectively reduced the Genres to either Superhero or Archie style Slice of Life for decades. We're still feeling the after effects.

And Superheroes are incredibly Marketable.

I didn't skip cooking on accident, Anon.

But there is diversity of genres, it's just that capeshit gets the most exposure.

manga is mainstream entertainment in japland so variety finds its audience
comics are extremely niche everywhere.
>>
1)Cost.
2) The Comics Code really fucked over that people could write, and the industry will probably never recover.
3)People who get into comics probably were inspired by capeshit comics.
>>
>>89871423
None of that stuff sells in the US. You'd need to completely restructure things, the least of which is getting rid of Diamond, to give non-cape comics even half a chance of getting sold.
>>
Seduction of the innocent crippled comics super hard for years and they never really recovered.

Comics in the US are dying compared to comics on Japan. Most of the US comics industry now survives off nepotism and projects that can translate into a fat television or film cash grab.

You also have different distribution methods. Monthlies are seen as expensive and are nearly all single issue where in japan you can have extremely niche magazines about a single genres or ideas and dedicate all the comics inside it to that. You can still see this practice being done in the west but it's done in the form of curated fanzines and kickstarter anthologies.

I'm also interested in hearing more about this >>89871454 and wouldn't be surprised if that was another factor. This seems like the easiest one to fix though but western audiences much prefer color which is more expensive to print than your usual black and white manga page.

Manga industry only survives because the anime industry gets kickbacks if they adapt something compared to making something original.

Not bumping this weebshit thread.

>>89871648
the content is shit because the writer is shit, a good writer doesn't write shit.
>>
All that stuff exists over here. Superhero comics are just the biggest part of the market, just like Shonen fighting manga and cute girl anime are the biggest over there.

What?

Why are weaboos so fucking clueless? Are they just proud of being ignorant, or do they have actual mental issues?

Cu them a break, they'll probably get a little smarter when they graduate high school.

So what are the horticulture and...uh...ice cream mangas that the OP were referring to?
>>
>>89871540
Like half the best manga ever made are baseball manga
>>
I don't know about horticulture, but there's hortisculpture.

It's because comics tied themselves to the secondary market for a long time, avoiding mainstream book stores, and turned themselves into a niche specialty market.

Manga is also released in collections. So instead of buying a single comic at a time, you buy a trade-sized book every week or two, with lots of different manga collected together. This means that people are exposed to more books than just the one they want to read, and it leads to a lot of cross-promotion. Slice of life books often include cooking stories, etc. And adventure books often include lots of different types of adventure books, some with magic, some science fiction, MMA, etc. Buying manga ends up feeling more like subscribing to a TV station. Then very popular comics are collected into trades and sold.

As a result, manga has a very broad appeal. Everyone reads them. So they print more books, and sell them at cheaper prices.

If anything, the American comics industry is a lesson in how NOT to sell comics. Single issues, attention on secondary markets, and high prices have basically put comics into a corner they can't escape from. They could. They could collect their books, print on cheaper paper, and get people reading more stuff. But DC and Marvel have pretty much committed to making their big money from movies and games at this point. So it's not likely to change until a dark horse decides to really shake things up and sell collections in actual book stores and super markets, convenience stores, etc. But it's going to be hard because they will have to convince the mainstream markets to read their funnybooks again, after squandering their attention.

Damn son! Case done.
>>
Sometimes I feel comics ask too much from the regular person, with so many universes, characters, books, etc. it gets tiresome to keep up and it's intimidating for people to start.

Also the stigma comics have by just being Superhero comics despite of that not being the case is not a problem with manga, which has never been labeled with an specific genre, I think the variety and cheaper price is what allows manga to sell better than comics.
