I wonder just how independent the B-1 droids are.

The movies show them in a serious if clumsy way, obeying all commands without question or hesitation.

While The Clone Wars cartoon shows them as highly sentient, self-concerned, as emotive as C-3PO.

I know the cartoon is aimed at children, but it is canon.

I consider some droids such as
C-3PO and R2-D2 as fully sentient either due to actual programming or in R2's case years of collective experiences from no memory wipes.

TCW just casts B1s in a sentient light, limited for sure, but much more independent than the movies.

TCW was the start of the golden age IMO. First canon non-movie content.

Don't get me wrong, I read and enjoyed the EU for a decade, but lets face it, it's not the same as tv shows, annual movies, and comics/books that are explicitly canon. The world of Star Wars finally feels huge, in a valid and official way, rather than what could honestly be compared to fanfiction back in the EU.

You can watch a tv show episode about some Jedi younglings learning to build their lightsabers, while reading a book about Vader fighting that Twilek dude from a few episodes back, and then read a comic that leads Poe Dameron into the events of TFA.

As you say, it's wonderful to get lost in it all now. Getting lost in the EU was stressful, because there was so much, and most of it didn't fit together.

I've been rewatching TCW (now powering through it before it leaves Netflix).

Is it me, or did the series get a massive increase in visual quality on the first Zygerrian slaver episode? The episode looks gorgeous and seems to be higher quality than anything else before it, even in the same season.

I feel like those statements are pretty inflammatory to people are are enjoying the new stuff as much as we enjoyed the old stuff. Nobody even "worships" Disney. Even the biggest fans here acknowledge the faults of Aftermath, and most of us liked the EU. Fact is, acknowledging the objective benefits of the current Canon isn't a bad thing. It's not "worshipping" Disney to praise the stronger continuity, or the fact that we're getting movies alongside our comics and cartoons now.

Not that anon but I thought it was okay, just really underwhelming. The writing was passable at best but not great, and the story was just uninteresting. It's a shame because learning more about Ahsoka in between The Clone Wars and Rebels was the aspect of new canon I was most excited for, but they ended up showing the least interesting slice of it. I wish it had taken place over the course of a few years at least.

I feel new canon is doing that a lot, actually. They are bringing up exciting concepts for untold backstory and then dishing out really uninteresting looks at it. Obi-Wan & Anakin, the Darth Maul comic, Ahsoka - all of these were great in theory but they ended up showing us "wow it's nothing" segments. It would be the equivalent of if the prequel trilogy didn't show Anakin become Darth Vader but instead was entirely about him building droids as a slave.

I can see what you mean. It skipped what she did after leaving the Jedi Order, what happened to her during the Mandalore bits, order 66, etc. Then jumped to her a couple years later on some rando planet and her encounter with a force sensitive kid, then how she saved some small moon.

It's like the most important aspects of it were to show how the empire was stripping poorer worlds with that crop they were planting, show why we didn't see sixth brother in Rebels, and give a reason for Ahsoka showing up as Fulcrum in Rebels. None of those things were particularly interesting in the context of her individual story, rather was just background for her being part of the rebellion.

Not that Anon, but speaking as someone who's studying 3D modelling and animation, I don't think it's the models so much as their animation movements being more limited and less realistic, probably to save time and therefore money. It's particularly noticeable with mouth movements, where the mouths seem to just deform on the faces in quite unnatural ways rather than moving the jaw and facial muscles the way they should.

From what I've seen, droids are AI that develops personality and ideals as they acquire more experiences. Eventually they develop a degree of independence like R2 and some of the less known droids do. If you wipe their memory banks, they lose all that.

It's safe to assume that standard battle droid maintenance procedure is wiping their memories after missions have been complete and their data banks discharged into some sort of mainframe.

It is also possible that droids are coded with basic personality so they look more alive and don't make their owners uncomfortable with uncanny valleyness. However they will follow orders without hesitation even if they show distress.

Basically, anything goes.

Did either of you read the book? They've explicitly shown the Siege of Mandalore already in the book. We know that Anakin gave Ahsoka some of the 501st, she went to Mandalore, found Maul, and then fought him until Order 66 happened. They will never touch on these events ever again other than references because we literally know exactly what happened. Expecting a Siege of Mandalore comic/movie/etc is like expecting a comic/movie telling the attempted assassination attempt on Palpatine by the Free Ryloth movement as if we haven't already had those events completely explained in the form of a novel.

It was started by talking about how we were disappointed by the Ahsoka novel. It left much to be desired. The first six pages of the book cover the Seige of Mandalore. All we learn from that scene is that there are two armies and then the rest is just Maul and Ahsoka talking smack. I guess if that's all there was to the Seige of Mandalore, then sure, we might not get any further info. The next flashback we get is of post Order 66, three pages where Ahsoka fakes her death, leaves behind her lightsabers and goes of to hide. Not much substance - which is why some people were disappointed by the books, and also why people want more information on the Seige

He already had a motive for that when Biggs left, and it wasn't to join the fucking Rebellion. He stated very clearly he wanted to go to the Academy, like Biggs did, which is not the Rebellion. He doesn't get any reason to deal with the Rebels at all under R2-D2 spills the holomessage Leia had for Obi-Wan, and even THEN he still doesn't intend to join the Rebels until Owen and Beru get well-done.

You're actually retarded and don't know Filoni at all if you think he would ever try to taint Luke's story.

Filoni has more respect for Lucas's movies and characters than probably everybody else at Lucasfilm and Disney. He's never done anything with the intention of diminishing anything in those movies. Even back in TCW with Jar Jar, they weren't disrespectful to that character, but rather doing what would have wanted, and tried to get people to see how he can be fun.

In fact, he's already talked about this very subject before, saying he can't and wouldn't influence Luke nor Vader with his own characters, because that's not their story to tell. Sometimes things can cross over, but only when it's done in a valid and interesting way. He knows that shoving Luke into the show pre-ANH would add nothing to ANH, nor Rebels, and he has even spoken out about avoiding unnecessary fanservice in the past.

It's why Ahsoka couldn't bring Vader back from the dark, and it's why Luke is absolutely NOT going to be going on adventures with Ezra/Kanan before ANH.

Filoni is one of the most trustworthy people at Lucasfilm when it comes to not stepping on the established continuity of the series, especially Lucas's movies.
