Not trying to just be a contrarian here, but was anyone else not too hot on this episode? I really don't see what the writers were going for. Marco's whole 'arc' was confusing and not done very well. The main appeal seems to be in all the shipteasing this episode (which I think was done at least partly on purpose). It doesn't help that Heckapoo has the personality of a second-rate Adventure Time character. Just all around a weird episode, and not in a particularly good way.

Oh, and all of those who think this episode is going to have future significance, I wouldn't count on it. It seems mostly like a throwaway.

Up until the very end I was guessing that the Marco that got his own pair of scissors from Heckapoo was an alternate universe version, and that by the end of the episode he was going to shunt the scissors off to the "original" Marco. Or that he was going to get deaged and memory wiped or some shit.

Instead nope, he just loses his body.

And frankly it made the episode weird as fuck. It didn't feel neither like a status quo shaker or an one off joke episode, and I am just going to have to wait to see what they make of Marco now.

There's a chance that they will touch on the effects of his magical journey, but equally there's a chance it'll have no lasting effects and be forgotten by the next episode featuring him.

One possibility though is that the theme of the upcoming episode All Belts are Off is centered around Marco using his memories to push for an advance in his karate practice. So there may yet be some meaningful effects from Running with Scissors, we'll have to wait and see if they exist. Should they exist it's definitely a possibility that Marco may realise that Jackie means less to him then he previously though, particularly if capability to go on adventures is brought into the mix.

The show's still laid back and fun, it's just that of the past four episodes since the mid-season hiatus ended, two have had plot development about on the level of the Toffy episodes and the most recent is more "out there" than usual, and people are arguing over whether it's plot or filler.

Overall, I'd say the series may have gone from 10% serious to 30% serious, but is still mostly silly.

Try watching the Spider With a Top Hat episode, that'll give you an idea where the tone is headed without spoiling anything.

What it really meant to show that Marco is determined to finish any quest he sets his sight on. And that he is also willing to leave behind a completely different life for Star. Even if she doesn't look the part Star is a rugged adventurer she has been to many places and met many magical creatures. Marco is now on level with her from this perspective.

Adventure Time handled this better in Puhoy. Finn just forgot everything, and returned to his normal self by the end of the episode. People might have whined about always returning status quo, but you can't do crazy episodes and actually have them matter.

Marco having lasting effects (the mark, the scissors) and being mentally 30 sounds daring in concept, but only if they commit to it. And this show isn't plot-heavy enough to try it. They're just going to pretend it never happened or lampshade it, probably the latter because the scissors will have to get used eventually.

The litmus test is how they handle his old relationship with Jackie. He spent so much time fighting Heckapoo that they're friendly with each other, her demeanor changed from condescending to seductive, and he trusts her enough to leave his motodragon familiar with her. They even pulled some scene fuckery like pic related.

When he got back, all the visual cues in >>89808854 indicate that his experiences have lasted, and he comes off as distant from his old mundane life that he left behind. If he's also distant from Jackie, then they might actually be committing to the 16 year gap in time.

But odds are high that this was just a non-canon gag episode. Non-canon in that it will never come up again and won't have a lasting impact on the characters mentally, but canon in that the scissors will still physically be there, which will remind people that it happened. That's just part of the shit writing.
