So in this incredibly expected conclusion we discover the straight white man was the villain all along! Long live the they/them/it/thing romance that we all saw coming. Why was this even a Deadman book? He just kinda bumbles around, he's very ancillary to the story. An extremely poor use of a character I'm very fond of. The art was pretty good though, the mansion itself looked grand.

I feel like this was a leftover from DC You.This story is not the worst of it's type and it's you know a gothic romance in comics which we don't get a lot of. The problem is the book is a very cliche one that if you know your tropes and how writers like to play softball with characters like Sam, it's obvious who the main villain will be. So the driving mystery is a slog to get through and the ending could have worked but we've seen this ending before. >>89771401

There wasn't even much of a struggle it's just Deadman holding the villain still so he cant do anything, Deadman telling you everything remotely interesting about the story, then then he's dead. Then the happy tumblr couple go off on there merry way.

I'm op here, even though I'm not the storytimer. I'm just...so disappointed by this book. It really had lots of potential. I was expecting something like Crimson Peak. But this story had no nuance at all. No true surprise or twist. Not even a bittersweet ending. The art really was the best thing about it. The covers are all very nice art.

I agree, once I saw in the soclit I knew where the story would go. It's not something I like and I was hoping the writer would give Sam something to do in the story because when you introduce a character like that they can't just be "insert representation" character here. If Sam had a personalty I would like this book. and poor Deadman, I feel like he was only put into this book to at least get people to check it out.

It also doesn't help that Bernice is really not a good protagonist for comics. She would be fine as a you know literature character where her thoughts would drive the book. But as a normal human character she does not stand out at all.

Same here. It felt like the writer just wanted to show off her diversity bona fides, but didn't have much in the way of story or characters to back it up. It ended up one of the all-too-common cases where 'representation' ends up mattering more than anything else, creating something instantly forgettable.

I think a lot of non-comic writers who come it and write bad comics don't ever bother to examine how to comic writing works. They never learn about how many word balloons to put in a panel or how many panels to a page. They just think that writing comics will be easy mode.

so much this. There are exceptions, big exceptions. But like look at how Fight Club two became self indulgent. If you want to see a good example right now World of Wakanda by Roaxana Gay is one of the worst written book I've read. She's loved in the circles she travels in but man she's not good, she even brought back word balloons in the worst way possible.

This book was such a goddamn letdown. I was looking forward to Boston finally getting his own story for the first time in years and supernatural adventures. Instead I got Agenda pushing with the title fucking character barely being relevant.

Deadman had no reason to be a part of this. They could have taken him out completely and almost nothing would have changed.

I wouldn't even have a problem with that if the Mary Sue lead just went "Oh, my friend uses 'they'" and Boston shrugged and left it at that, but no. They had to do that whole line about "not man or woman, just AWESOME." and it soured the whole thing and revealed what it was really about.
