I don't know Chinese stuff but the path starts at the end of the S at the bottom at 0/belly/invulnerable then to 1/fist/strength then 2/ear/hearing then 3 then jump to 7 to 6 to 5 and then 4 as the last.
What are the symbols and body they mean? It'll tell us the order he gets his powers.

This guy precedes Batman, who only showed up in #027, and was what triggered the publication of Action Comics number 1.
This guy, and this image, right down to the banner, writing and bubbles, is basically the comic equivalent of the First Book of Genisis. In terms of comics, he precedes Batman, Superman and pretty much every other comic character out there.

>>89756581
Eh it's not as if the author himself came up with that sequence, he just noted a coincidence in appearance and used it to his advantage to mold Kenan's powerset and growth.
>>89753551
>Why is the Chinese Superman getting a villain who’s a Chinese stereotype? It’s all part of a plan.
>When originally offered the chance to write a new, Chinese Superman for DC Comics, writer and MacArthur “genius grant” recipient Gene Luen Yang turned down the opportunity because he felt the series could be a “cultural and political land mine.”
>After changing his mind and becoming the writer on “New Super-Man,” Yang is now set to reintroduce one of DC Comics’ oldest bad guys, who some might say is the embodiment of political incorrectness.
>Ching Lung, whose appearance on the cover of the very first issue of Detective Comics back in 1937 predates the first appearance of Superman in 1938, will appear on the final pages of “New Super-Man” No. 8 (available Feb. 8 both in print and digitally).
>Ching Lung will go up against Chinese Superman Kong Kenan and the Justice League of China, a group of young teen superheroes that includes the Batman and Wonder Woman of China.
>Ching Lung is considered now to be a “yellow peril villain,” as he was originally designed to fuel the fears some Americans had of the Chinese in the 1930s. So he may be a surprising choice to bring into a series that has embraced diversity and fit into a market trend of taking famous superhero mantles and placing them on new characters of color — even if he’s coming in as an antagonist.
>But Yang, who is Chinese American, said he felt the character fits into DC’s “rebirth” era, which has re-energized DC’s fan base by going back to the characters’ basics, after the polarizing New 52 era of constant reinvention. Yang said the reset approach shouldn’t only apply to the publisher’s good aspects.
>>89758903
>“If Rebirth is about embracing the history of the DC universe, then we do have to go back to the very beginning, right?” Yang told The Post’s Comic Riffs. “If we really want to embrace who we are as Americans, we have to look at both the good and the bad and the pretty and the ugly of our history. If rebirth is about reclaiming a lot of DC’s past, we also have to examine some of the ugly stuff, too. So that’s what we’re hoping to do.”
>What’s also surprising is that the design of Ching Lung in “New Super-Man” almost mirrors his original 1930s design, which may seem offensive to modern eyes (and is very different from the typical style of “New Super-Man” artist Billy Tan). That is intentional. After trying out new, more modern designs, Yang thought it best to go back to the original one.
>“I thought if we redesign Ching Lung, we will actually be introducing a new form of yellow peril. And that is definitely something that I was not interested in doing,” Yang said. “The purpose is not necessarily to kick up old stereotypes as it is to comment on them. My hope is at the end of all of the story line, the entire long arc that deals with Ching Lung, that a reader will be able to see it as both a comment on the past and evidence of how far we’ve come.” (Lung appears on the last page of No. 8, and his story line won’t be revealed until later issues.)
>That’s not to say that Yang and his editors at DC Comics didn’t struggle with the decision to bring back Ching Lung.
>“We were very thoughtful about [the return of Ching Lung],” Yang said. “I think that the two dominant emotions that I had going into the publication of issue No. 8, is a little bit of fear, I’m worried about how the readers are going to take to it, and the second is, I feel proud. I feel proud of playing a small part in the history of DC Comics and the history of American comics in general.”
>>89758931
>Yang also pointed out that the character shows how far DC Comics has come.
>“DC began with this yellow-peril image,” Yang said. “It’s basically a two-dimensional stereotype that was used to dehumanize an entire people. And now DC has taken its most important symbol, the Superman S, and stuck it on a Chinese character. Now we’re creating this three-dimensional Chinese hero.”

I just remembered something, remember how the prototype designs for Kenan had some chinese characters in the shield instead of the S? I now feel shame for saying that I liked that design more. If that had been the final design we wouldn't have gotten this moment.
>>89770068
> tfw you did too
I'm so sorry Gene
ALPACA A CUTE! A CUTE!
>>89769632
>>89759049
Last thread someone who allegedly works on this book came into the thread and dropped hints, but I don't think anyone figured it out. Prevailing theory was that it was related to Sun Wukong.
>>89772196
She did mention sleeping under a rock for a long as time if I remember the line correctly, so yes of course she's related to Sun Wukong.
I kind of want Thunderlord to show up. Yang could use it to explore the complex relationship between China and Taiwan.
>>89753539
oh shit so the one that died was probably a clone and this one is the original being fucked with by the Chinese.
Meaning the Chinese made a more or less stable Bizarro

kino
>>89753539
>>89753551
I have no idea what's going on, but I like it
>>89755656
I was thinking about this myself anon
>>89773453
First Chinese Super-man prototype that broke out of Omen's facility in his first appearance is now working for the extremely stereotypical chink cartoon villain from the very first cover of Detective Comics.
>>89773552
Yeah I scrolled down a bit and got to the golden age storytime.
But no idea where all the Supermans and Clarks shit is going even with the crossover coming up. Should be interesting.
>>89756251
That has got to be one of the wordiest speech bubbles I've ever seen.
>>89772297
Nope, it was stated it wasn't that last thread.
>>89772196
>>89772297
There's been a few scattered Sun Wukong references (like Kenan's power-inhibiting tiara) so I wouldn't read too much into it
>>89761193
Sounds like you've got a case of Orientalism, friend. Be careful or you may end up like this guy. Ordinary German man goes to Constantinople, gets pumped with massive shot of foreign culture, feels good and changes - ORIENTALISM. Many such cases!
>>89757707
As far as comics go, yeah. This is introducing cultural stuff to comics in an organic way that's also exciting and fun, which is what a lot of the Marvel guys are forgetting to do.
>>89761193
I think it's fine as long as you're clear that you don't think every Asian person is secretly part of a sinister hive of conspirators looking to rule the world.
Yellow peril is tricky that way, but totally divorcing ourselves from pulp in storytelling is cutting off a huge amount of comic history.
>>89775673
Why do you think that might be? Is it because they aren't as familiar with the cultures they're writing about as Yang is about Chinese culture? Is it because they play softball with those cultures while Yang is taking the bad along with the good? Or is it just plain laziness.
>>89775764
Not him but I think it's largely that they lack the skill to do what they're attempting and do it well. It seems like they do try to do some research and have good intentions (at the creator level at least, I don't trust the editorial/marketing tbqh), but so often it comes across as cringey because they have no tact and don't know how to incorporate it into storytelling.
I'm surprised Yang is the first to realize the Chinese mysticism yin yang symbol makes an S. You think someone a writer or thd hypercisis cult would have hit on it.
>>89776265
The secret is that Yang has been in hypercrisis threads the entire time.
>>89776265
I remember it being brought up in a discussion about All Star Superman years ago.
The thing about a lot of those old pulp racist characters is that to fix them just don't make them insanely racist when you use them. Like Cooke using Ebony White in The Spirit
>>89776452
Well, there's the problem of their appearance. How do you redesign them so that they aren't totally racist (fangs, evil/red eyes, grey skin, etc) while still keeping the character recognizable?
>>89776452
Eisner did this himself in the 70s/80s with a militant black reporter asking Ebony what it was like to be a walking Stepin Fetchit stereotype. Spirit walks in to ask a question and Ebony lays out in detail how he tailed and nabbed a perp and has all the evidence the police will need to arrest the tied up man in the corner of the room.
Then Ebony turns to the reporter and says "What was your question again?"
Cooke just fucked with everything he didn't like INCLUDING making P'Gell a tragic figure.
>>89776532
>(fangs, evil/red eyes, grey skin, etc)
Those are more general evil features than racist ones. You'd have a better point if you said buck teeth, closed eyes, and banana yellow skin.
>>89777114
I'm still fucking fascinated by DC letting the Dominators exist
>>89777161
I wouldn't go all the way back to the first appearance but white dots instead of red might help? Or draw them less humanoid I guess.
>>89777161
>>89777245
Subtlety's for faggots
>>89759533
Don't end on a cliffhanger, what happens next!?
>>89777514
burdened by its own weight, FUN falls and crushes Miguel and Jack but spares Don Miguel who would be DC's first villain except for Lung Fung stealing that
>>89769632
I mean Alpaca's whole motivation is the government organization she works for keeping her and her brother prisoner and wanting to be free of government control-and ANY control.
It's kind of appropriate.
>>89775764
I agree with >>89775962
A lot of this is that Marvel's editorial is not doing their job and cultivating their talent. Look at what happened to Ms. Marvel for an example.
Like I said earlier, what makes New Super-Man great is that it's a great comic book above all else. Yang knows how to pace and structure a funnybook, which is a different medium and art form from a film script (which a LOT of comics ape to their detriment.) or other script style.
Superman's editing team is doing their job which is a big part of every Superbook's success lately. I don't think there's any really weak Super book, even if Action dips in quality depending on the month.
We like to blame the writer alone, but comics are a team effort and if young talent isn't being properly mentored and guided in how to write and plot an excellent comic book...well, then that talent's being wasted.
>>89777582
ok I retract my comment then
>>89776532
You're ultimately talking about relatively minor design changes.
>>89777670
Yang was pretty damn successful in comics before doing big 2
>>89777670
>I don't think there's any really weak Super book,
You forget Supergirl and Superwoman.
>>89777733
And Action
>>89777746
He remembered Action. Read the damn posts before replying.
>>89777783
well less forgetting and more that even in the "good" months it's still not passable
I thought the villain was Grass Horse or something not Alpaca.
>>89777733
>>89777746
>>89777818
Honestly I think I'd rather read Action as it is now over a lot of Marvel titles nowadays. It's that bad.
>>89778682
grass mud horse is translated into alpaca which is slang for something
>>89779815
Fuck your mother.
How is this series? I didn't really care about New Supes until he appeared in whitebread Supes. Should I pick up the first trade?
>>89780043
It's super, man.
>>89780043
Yeah. It this issue went from great to one of the best things DC is making.
>>89779946
sheesh, I was just asking.
>>89775764
Ironically, Yang's said he doesn't know shit about Chinese culture. He just does research.
Chinese Suicide Squad is comprised of people who work at Foxconn
>>89753551
Holy fucking shit. This is so damn good.
Still waiting/hoping this book survives long enough for the "Trinity" crossover event. OG Trinity vs Dark Trinity vs China Trinity. Please DC.
>>89754929
Be respectful, it is the first fish tentatively crawling onto land. It's not going to win any marathons.

Here's something.
>>89753500
I always thought the S meant Burgers
