The whole point of the mutants is they're a bunch of dumb teenaged gangbangers who just want to be part of whatever the cool new trend is at the time, so when Batman fucks up their leader, they decide Batman's the cool new trend, let's imitate him instead...but they get it wrong and continue to be gangbangers just in Batman facepaint until he himself steps in and tells them what to do.
