Saw the movie with my female friend, we agreed onceler had a cute button nose, nice hair, and his guitar playing made him fuckable, we looked him up on tumblr to find quite an amount of fanart- seems they agreed.
more fanart was produced, and more people were curious about the film and went to see it, the character got so popular that people started saying they liked him to fit in, RP fanart blogs started, but eveyrone wanted to be original so you had all this "OC DONUT STEAL HIPSTER TIEDIE ONCELER garbage"
it soon became an unstoppable monster.

It wasn't a great movie, but the onceler is a pretty realistic villain character. He doesn't think what he's doing is wrong, even it if it's obvious to the audience.

It wasn't even the fangirls that were weird about it, it was that the entire fandom dispensed with giving a fuck about literally anything else from the movie of anything to do with it. Usually there are at least two characters people are shipping even if they give a shit about nothing else, here it was just one guy they had to make two people out of him somehow before the shipping could even start.

I've heard of the Turbo thing here but never saw it myself so I'll leave that off for now.

I don't know if the patterns are that clear. With Jack Frost, he's this typically attractive character you just figure girls would like. Same with Hiccup and these characters are pretty generic and standard protagonists.

With Hiccup you get into another big common theme which is that the characters are "dorky" and "quirky." Fangirls see themselves as dorky and quirky and think they can identify. They seem relatable and approachable because they're shown as dorks. Benderick Cumberbumble's Sherlock is another example of a dork or nerd.

Often they are supposed to be funny and quippy characters. Spike from Buffy was before tumblr a breakout fangirl magnet.

But then, lots of the characters are morally ambiguous or amoral or outright villains so you get into "bad boy" territory. But that leaves out Sans, Jack Frost, and Hiccup and others who are clear good guys for their entire stories.

Lots have superpowers. But is that just about characters in general? See Elsa from Frozen, audiences like characters with cool powers.

One thing that is almost always true is the characters are skinny and are not muscular. Typically muscular guys do not seem to get the big followings of fangirls here. Super skinny twigs do. Only exception is Sans but he is also a skeleton. Is it because they seem too threatened or unrelatable?

So looking at all of them, a few things stand out that make it more likely a character will get this kind of following.

1. He is nerdy or dorky, probably like the fangirls see themselves as. This might be the single most important one.
2. He is skinny. Or speaking of which Wheatley from Portal, who in the game is just a robot sphere thing, they turn him into a skinny British guy even though he's shaped like a ball, so he is never drawn as tubby. So he can be an object or animal that gets drawn as a skinny human guy.
3. He has funny lines/quips.
4. He looks "girly" and bishonen.
5. He is a bad guy or an anti-hero.
6. He has cool powers, bonus points if he's one of the most powerful characters in the game or whatever, even a god.
7. There are male characters he can be shipped with and maybe a few female. If not that, for some reason it becomes easy to ship him with other versions of himself. Or all these things.
8. There is some gentleman/genteel/classy bit like his clothes or accent or both (suits, British accents).
9. There is a sad sob backstory or you can give the character one to make them moe. Or bad things happen to them.
10. General quirkiness.
11. This is an obvious one for everyone but traits or scenes that can play into big sexual fetishes. Can you easily make them a submissive bottom to some other guy? Or do they have mind control powers or are sadistic and you can make them into a top in gay porn? Both?

That's all I can think of right now there are probably more.

As someone who's been obsessed with this admittedly shitty movie for five years and counting, I can tell you that, at least in my case, it's because there was something really cool buried under all the garbage, and the garbage only makes me more interested in finding that which is cool.

I really like cartoons and musicals. I really like animated musicals. Most of my favorite musicals deal with grey morality and often have tragic heroes. This movie's interpretation of the Once-Ler is more of a tragic hero than the one in the animated short (though the book definitely followed a basic tragic structure), and he's made into a generic, likeable everyman to help sell it, like Seymour in Little Shop of Horrors. His entire tragic arc is shoved into a single three minute musical number, though, which is fucking nuts, given that they have a 90 minute movie to work with. It's insane to me that a Dr. Seuss movie had issues with being too rushed, as opposed to being too padded.

The look and sound of this movie is great. The Once-Ler, himself, is great. My only problem with the Once-Ler/Lorax portion of the movie is that the animals act too human and not animal enough.

The other portion of the movie has cool set design and great music, but it's totally disconnected from the movie's other portion and I don't understand the thought process behind it. And don't get me started on that dipshit from Illumination who said it was hard to adapt Lorax to a three act structure. There's literally a three act structure laid out for you in the fucking book.

If you actually want to discuss one of these types of characters you basically have to already know who you want to talk to or it could spiral into memes and fanfiction territory that just makes it hard to find people who also enjoy the character for who they are. Tumblr is a place of many odeas and interests, and ine of the major interests is yaoi.

A similar thing happened to Sans because his brother is a "precious cinnamon roll, too pure" and many avoided fontcest as a result. Th is led to a bunch of AU Sanss being made, and then because your alt-sibling isn't your sibling, twice the au shipping. The moral is have two potential gays lying around or shit will go down.

I'm more bothered that Testament's characterization went to shit over it. In the past he trusted Dizzy to the pirates because it was what she wanted, and he respected Ky despite being enemies, and Ky had clearly been on Testament and Dizzy's side at the end of X2. There was no reason for Tes to be throwing a shit fit over his little girl falling in love with the best possible guy. I never saw Testament as a sexual pairing with Dizzy... he was like an over protective father or big brother, if anything.

His character got the opposite of closure, and now I worry the creators just don't know what to do with him and he'll be relegated to an eventual unlock-able with no story mode purely for novelty like Cliff and Justice had become.
