Did anons ever finish subbing this?
>>
>>89640130
no
the translator got too busy to continue after ep 4 but the series was released on netflix in some countries and i assume with subs
>>
>>89640287
They got all the way through episode 11 with fan subs, but they just released the official subs for the last one. It works, but some of the stylistic differences are almost too jarring at times if you get too used to the first.

Also, this series was fucking amazing and gorgeous. Part of me really wants a "second season" focused around different kids and their experience in the war, or other wars.

If you ever find Garulfo, don't miss on it. It's easily one of the best things I've read in years.
It's about a frog (heh) who wants to become human, and gets his wish granted by a witch. Of course he quickly realizes that the world of men is not as great as he had imagined

I never got into Wake or Sillage, but the Navis prequel comic is literally perfect for a SatAM style program. It's got the deep ass lore. it's got the cute animals and #STRONGFEMAILPROTAGONIST for the young girl audience. It's got vicious beasts, great action and a cute girl for the young male audience. it's the total package. CARTOON ADAPTATION WHEN

Lastman is a good french cartoon.

Unfortuntly the person who was translating and subbing episodes in English then putting them up on youtube got noticed, so they had to take all the episodes down.

Not sure where to see the rest of the series now.

Never read the original comic, can't say how good it is in comparison.

>>89645061
Patrician tastes.
By the same writer, 7 missionaires is a masterpiece. 7 monks, each one guilty of indulging in one of the deadly sins, are sent on a suicide mission to convert vikings by the church, so the northerners stop raiding monasteries and if it fails, they still get rid of seven assholes, win-win. And Critone's watercolors are gorgeous. Look at those characters; not a single sameface, everyone got a disting garb and bodytype.
There's also D, a victorian thriller about vampire hunting, but unlike Garulfo I think Maionara artstyle doesn't do the story justice. Still very good.

Finding foreign animated programs and posting them on /co/ is something of a hobby for me. The best way to find anything foreign is to keep an eye on the big international events. The Cartoon Forum, for example, or MIPCOM and MIPJUNIOR.

Like this French cartoon. I went through the listings on the Cartoon Forum's website, found a French animation studio called Monkey Eggs. I decided to check out the Monkey Eggs website and found this trailer for their next 52x11 animated series. If I didn't find this, and didn't post it, how long would it be before anybody actually noticed that it existed?

https://vimeo.com/170016717

There's a certain power in giving unknown animations attention. The Last Reservation. The Mysteries of Providence. Wolfy: The Incredible Secret. Pumpkin Reports. Sherlock Yack. Rimba Racer. There are more than I could possibly list. I played a role in getting these shows attention on /co/. Attention that they may have never received otherwise.

I don't always succeed. The Memories of Nanette recently premiered in France. I made threads for it and uploaded videos - in English - but nobody cared. The threads were a bust.

Only french comic I know off hand is Kairos. Hero goes off to save the girl from being kidnapped to the land of dragons. Not french since the author is swiss, but the Jonathan series is great for those who like trips around the world. Romanticised accounts of his travels and experiences.

The Azure Buddha is an excellent two shot in the same vein, about a young english noble in India running away Tibet. Set before and after the chinese invasion.

Reminder that EC-707 is a known pedophile from Brazil who is obsessed with the boners he gets from obscure European cartoons.

He will usually (a) beg (pathetically) for anons to buy him an entire season on Amazon USA or UK or whatever (always priced for over $100 per season), when it is abundantly clear that he can get it himself with his six million autism bux

and/or (b) shill his depraved and disgusting fan-art of underage characters from said obscure European cartoons in suggestive situations (99% of the time in the nude or inflated or inflated AND nude) from his Deviantart account.

I liked the cartoon tremendously.

It even made be read the comic... it's good, after a while. Not as good as the cartoon, though.
If only they didn't change the setting and antagonists with each arc, and didn't kill the best characters every time You were too pure for this sinful world, Mr. Pin-Pon ;_;
Ties well with the cartoon (and fighting game, I guess), despite the lack of kinglets.

Got two kung fu magicians fighting each other with nothing on them but a leather thong or ripped hospital garb, though. That was nice.

There is no webtranslator that doesn't suck copious amounts of dick. At best you can get the gist of what's going on, but you'll still need to manually fix up every page. Both because the translator is often wrong and because things like figures of speach will get wrongfully translated.

I wouldn't analyze a french comic as if it was an US production. Arleston is pretty lazy at times, so using the redneck stereotype is an easy way to make a villain faction for him.
Same way many eurocomics use the kkk. Secret society of notables in rural america that don't need time to be introduced. What else could you want?

I saw Albert Uderzo at a grocery store in Paris yesterday. I told him how cool it was to meet him in person, but I didn’t want to be a douche and bother him and ask him for photos or anything.

He said, “Oh, like you’re doing now?”

I was taken aback, and all I could say was “Huh?” but he kept cutting me off and going “huh? huh? huh?” and closing his hand shut in front of my face. I walked away and continued with my shopping, and I heard him chuckle as I walked off. When I came to pay for my stuff up front I saw him trying to walk out the doors with like fifteen Galaks in his hands without paying.

The girl at the counter was very nice about it and professional, and was like “Sir, you need to pay for those first.” At first he kept pretending to be tired and not hear her, but eventually turned back around and brought them to the counter.

When she took one of the bars and started scanning it multiple times, he stopped her and told her to scan them each individually “to prevent any electrical infetterence,” and then turned around and winked at me. I don’t even think that’s a word. After she scanned each bar and put them in a bag and started to say the price, he kept interrupting her by yawning really loudly.

I think wars really shaped the eurocomic/cartoon mindset.
While karmic law is a big thing in the US, in european media bad things are more likely to happen to good people.
>>
>>89731649
The wars of the 20th Century definitely had an effect on European mindsets, but the effect they had differs quite a lot from country to country.

I think more than war it was the slow and steady decline of religious belief, which happened in a very, very different way than the almost conflict America has been having (and continues to have) about religion. It just sort of faded away, and with it so did the idea that people will get what they deserve in this life or the next.

Europeans are generally just much more cynical and likely to see anyone who still professes to believe in higher things such as God or country as being somewhat naive or trying to manipulate others. I think that's why a lot of people kind of look with disdain on American capes.Hope this doesn't bait /pol/, that's not my intention.

Since we're speaking about ww1:
A story about two former poilus, a french aristocrat and a southerner thug that befriended each other in the trenches, that decide to buy a sloop and sell contraband weapons to moroccan rebels. Things quickly go to shit and it escalades from there.

It's a bit like Lawrence of Arabia, I'd say.
>>
>>89732106
WWI instilled an idea of disarmament that helped fuel WWII. The rise of intellectuals caused a great deal of issues. They generated opinions that the public were far too quickly to agree with and put the politicians in precarious situations.

>>
>>89723002
>The girl at the counter was very nice about it and professional
>In Paris
That's where that story lost all credibility.
>>
>>89733235
I don't disagree from a historical perspective, but I'm not sure the national psyches and the kinds of stories we tell now are really the same as they were in the inter-war years. All these factors fed into who we are now, but there's no single thing that can be said to be the cause of the difference between current American and European approaches to storytelling (which you can see not only in comics and cartoons but film as well). If anything, the point of divergence in our societies was probably the American revolution, when the US decided to take its own path separate from the old colonial powers.
>>
>>89733257
I'd didn't see it either way. Though Nills could have argued his point better.
If you remove the sex of the protagonists (and the couple nature of the relationship), you get something like:
Royalty get kidnapped back to his kingdom to rule, against his will.
Friend comes to save him, start a revolution in the process, and kills everyone that opposes him, including most of the royal family. That are total cunts, btw.
Our royal protags is "dude, you just slaugthered my entire family and my kingdom is now a mess, also if you stay here you're gonna die because this land is poisonning you; I can't leave because now I'm the king and I have obligations"
Friend returns home and goes on with his life.

As a separation ending, it made me waaaaaaay less angry than Pullman's His Dark Materials that was all "we're soulmates but we must suffer". Here it's just two people parting ways.

Sure, it's not your usual happy ending, and it's been too long for me to remember if there was any foreshadowing, and the princess is a cunt (must run in the blood). But it didn't shock me at the time, and the book doesn't portrays it like it's the end of the world, or a good thing. It just is
>>
>>89733637
I saw it as both being horribly miserable in the end

Also the implication of using him to save them again in the future truly sad

I think it was an awful ending and I'd rather it didn't ever continue unless that turns around
>>
>>89733637
>>89733762
The story was a tragedy. I mean that's literally what the genre is.

One person is selfish to make themselves happy. Another is selfless to save someone's life. Neither intended to cause immense death and destruction with their original goals...but they do.

In an interview, Malassagne said that he tried to "turn" clichés from the rank-and-file heroic fantasy comic, to surprise the reader.

>>89733429
It's not a fundamental difference IMO.
France began mass shortening nobles 6 years after the US independance, belgium didn't even exist until 1830, and american are closer to english people than the brits are to other euros like the italians in a lot of ways. I think we have to look somewhere else to find a reason for the difference between both sides of the Atlantic ocean.
>>
>>89734263
My take on it is that the Us hasn't really been beaten down by another, truly and honestly, and had to stand back up again with a new perspective. It's had the 'American Dream' along with it's fascination with scrappy underdogs, bootstraps and 'hard work paying off' to help along as well. Nothing to back this with but Europe may simply view violence as just something that happens, that life is just something that happens. And good shit and bad shit happen not to good people or bad people or because there's a reward at the end of the suffering, but just because they happen.

I think you're right.
I had a discussion with some friends about the depiction of ultraviolence in comics from various countries and the cultural differences it implied, and here's what I remmeber of it (roughtly):
US comics have it has the means to an end. It's not good or evil, simply a tool to be used, that the protagonist will need in order to triumph.
This is the american dream and the will of americans to make the world a better place (or just shape it to their ideals, if you're cynic). It's very optimistic because you can get an happy ending, but on the other end it supports brutish ways.

Eurocomics have it as something inherent to the world. Usually, the protag will distinguish himself by opposing this world and the violence it contains, and the story is centered on his struggle. This is because europeans see the world as a bleak place, that you can't change but must try to do what's best for your survival, while maintaining ethics.

Mangas have it as an ordeal. The protagonist is transfigured by his exposure to violence, and has to join a preexisting faction. It's like a rite of passage where you find your purpose in life.
The fight is a natural, unending one between two sides.
It's because the japanese hugely value discipline and social order. You don't fight alone, you don't make waves, it's a "block" fighting another "block". And as a result, there is no complete winner in the end.

We didn't at the time, but reading it, I'd link it with ww2, that was pretty fresh when comics really took off everywhere.

(pic unrelated, but the Secret of Kells was gorgeous)

You might be surprised. I find both Euros and Americans think this, maybe even a lot of fellow Brits do too, but having spent time in all those places I'm inclined not to believe it. We share a sense of quite fierce individualism with Americans, but most social attitudes here are a lot closer to European views than American ones.

France has made some nice one shoots about legacy characters recently.
The Man Who Killed Lucky Luke is a great western story.
On a sidenote, I really liked the running gag about him not fiding tobacco anywhere, a small nod to french censorship taking place in the later albums.

Other nice westerns series : Jerry Spring, Bluberry, Chinaman, Undertaker. I've seen positive reviews of Buddy Longway but I have never read it myself.
There is also Cotton Kid if you like jokes. A pinkerton detective and his little brother, with an Inspector Gadget dynamic.

Not really. I mean there's some decent shit here and there but really they're just about equal to any other animation/comic industry out there. Don't get why /co/ likes to fellate its teeny weeny so much. I blame Wakfu and its ilk.
>>
>>89790110

>Not really. I mean there's some decent shit here and there but really they're just about equal to any other animation/comic industry out there.

Eh, nah. Of course USA and Japan have the biggest animation industries and produce great content, but other countless countries not even try because it's such an expensive medium with little reward. And countries that do try like Canada and many in LatAm produce garbage with few exceptions. In the other hand countries like Korea rarely produce original content and just animate US/Japanese productions.

Plus France has one of the most renowned animation schools in the world, so they are not equal to any other animation industry out there.

Maybe with comics it's other history, but I don't know much about that to argue with it.

I think it's as simple as the fact French comics generally tell good stories, with good art. The French industry is MASSIVE, artists and writers from all over Europe go to France to get their work published because the industry is so well developed. The bookshops have huge BD sections, easily four times the size (or larger) than any comics section I've ever seen in a UK or US bookshop, and you can find a comic about just about any subject that might interest you.

In terms of English language comics the market is dominated by capes, and indies which are more often than not tiresome agenda-pushing socio-political commentary or 2deep4u pretentious. Most French BDs I've read are just FUN, or else a good adventure or mystery and visually very engaging.

Eh, it's supposed to be an entry-level one, I made this back when no-one had put one up, it's mainly just stuff I like which is why it's probably a bit overloaded with stuff I've translated, but I tried not to be an egotist.. Also, don't lynch me, but I never really got into Smurfs, and I've never actually read a volume of Gaston.

Oh also, I've got a few things to hopefully release in the not too distant future. Volume 4 of Metropolis which completes the series in what I think is a pretty nice way, volume 4 of Wonderball, and I've just started the translation part of Alone volume 10, which I might prioritise for release as I think more people care about it than the others. But I also want to use this thing when it finally (after about 2 years) releases, looks neat. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8zz6FCIdawE
