Every main and reoccurring character is much more likable and funnier than those in Family Guy, and every episode actually focuses on a satisfying overarching plot rather than being written around stringing together bullshit cutaways. You can tell the writers of FG come up with cutaways and then figure out ways to shoehorn them in, whereas American Dad's random surreal moments play off of background characters that would normally be nothing but standard extras in other shows. Also the decision to transition Stan from a standard Conservative straight man to an over the top character that constantly surprises you with his interests and comments while still parodying right wingers makes him much more likable than turning Peter from a well meaning blue collar idiot to a sociopath that torments his family for cheap laughs.

Klaus is shit tier by design. He was supposed to be Roger, but when he took the part of inconsiderate jerk away from him, Klaus was left with fulfilling no specific role in it.
For what it is worth, they are trying to do their best with him. The very few moments he appears are always good, so that puts him into good tier.

Now Hayley on the other hand was there to fulfil the girl role in the family template. Not only did her original design to be a liberal counterpart of her conservative father became obsolete once they dropped the political aspect of the show. Just as perceived with Meg from Family Guy and Roberta from Cleveland Show, the creators have obviously absolutely no idea how to utilise a growing up female teenager into their comedy.

That is a curse of the family sitcom. The teenage daughter is always the worst character, and is always in every show.
Hayley i think is one of the more forgivable ones just because she has the whole stoner thing going on, but she falls into Lisa Simpson territory sometimes.
The only shows that ever did the teenage daughter thing right was Rick and Morty and Golan.
Summer in Rick and Morty is more adventurous than morty and has potential to be really cool, despite generic teenage girl personality.

In golan the teenage sister just screamed like a retard and was a joke about how terrible that character was.
