They're the best fusion. They got attitude, looks, personality, and cool ways to fight, all shown within their first year of their first episode (unlike some other fusions).

The appearance also fits very well with Smoky, bearing in mind that both Steven and Amethyst each have problems with themselves and sees each others as "worst Gems", so it makes sense that Smoky isn't really "pretty" or waifish. Still, they're adorable.

I thought the idea with fusion was that each partner was in sync with the other, not necessarily that they were emotionally closer. In that regard, it makes sense that Pearl rarely fuses with Amethyst, since their mindsets and general ways of doing things are very different, and only really seem to converge when it comes to protecting Steven.

Amethyst and Steven on the other hand, sync up well since when they fuse, they want to work together well, both being 'malformed' quartz types, as well as both being very childish.
