We still don't know who Beta is but having 30 pages of him and Negan fighting to the death would be amazing. I can see #163's final page being the reveal of Beta's face. It'd be interesting if he has some sort of facial disfigurement like Dwight but I doubt it. I do like the idea of him being Davidson and being batshit insane due to how much he spent in the wilderness with The Whisperers after being exiled but I think Beta is just no one important before his group showed up.

Maybe I'm bias because the show is what introduced to me to the series, but I think its pretty good. Not the best adaptation, but its alright. It has periods of bottle episodes but it usually pays off whenever they do something straight out of the comics. Mid season finales are always the best and the rest of the seasons sorta play around them. If you started out with the comics and go to the show you might be a tad disappointed, though.

It pains me knowing I'll never live in the timeline where HBO didn't pass on it. A non censored, fully comic accurate TWD show would be incredible.

They got most characters looking damn near spot on, but they mish-mashed a lot of their personalities; some people stay alive for longer, some people die earlier. Often they make a lot of parts longer, due to extra sub-plots, like in Atlanta, Rick carries a duffel bag of guns that get stolen, they find out that it was taken by nigger gangbangers who are protecting a home of the elderly (the attendants just left the place as-is). They also visit the CDC.

To put it into perspective, they stayed on Hershels form for something like 2 seasons, then they fought against the Governor for 2 others (after he fails the first time, he finds another group and tries attacking the prison again).

The consequence is that the show has shit load of drama but little action. I had to watch it in fast forward while browsing 4chan and I doubt I missed much if anything important.

One great addition though, is Daryl. He is easily the best character in the show, but completely absent in the comic. His brother was great too.

I think I watched it up to the part where they get into Alexandria, and beat up the guy who was beating his wife. Have there been any new seasons since then?

We're at season 7 now. Almost at All out War.

1 and a half years until they reach Alexandria. The series starts in late summer / early autumn, they hit their first winter on the way to the prison, the second winter in Alexandria, and I think around a few more months for them to kill Negan after that (people don't dress for cold during that time, as I recall).

I don't know how much time they skipped after that, before the Whisperers arrive, but it was enough for Carl and Sophia to hit puberty hard. I think that timeskip was 5+ years.

What's interesting is that the zombies still keep going despite having no food or nothing, surviving several winters of cold.

So I've been thinking more about Rick dying and Negan, Carl and Earl making some new kind of weapon out of his fake hand; a spear. What if Lucile "dying" when Negan used it to attack Beta doesn't foreshadow his death but symbolizes Negan's time with The Saviors is over? It's obvious when you think about it especially how The Saviors are planning to attack, Negan will have to make a difficult decision and if they do kill Rick he could get a spear forged from his hand to symbolize his alliance with the communities, not with The Saviors because they'd be all dead when their plan fails. They could still kill Rick but their plan to take over the communities fail.

I can see what you mean because it seems like every issue ends with a cliffhanger and only one major event happens per issue, but I think it has less to do with his writing and more of the length of the issues and the spacing between hen they're released. Also, TWD has a nice mix of 16 panel pages along with splash pages, so its a bit all over the place.

I read compendium 1 and 2 which are the first 96 issues and found the pacing to be more more tolerable than when reading issues as they're released.

TWD isn't a superhero comic, its an horror drama. Its gonna be a little slower paced.

I think my problem with the comic since #127 is the constantly delayed payoff. The ending of every issue has been "What's gonna happen next??" instead of an actual conclusion. This conflict with the Whisperers has been slowly escalating for like 2 fucking years, I'm ready to see some payoff.

This type of storytelling is fine if its used correctly, but Kirkman has been abusing it recently. If a story doesn't finish a chapter in a concise way it just devolves into "and then this happened, and then that happened, and then this happened...". I guess Kirkman thinks people won't buy the comic unless there's immediate danger posed to the characters, but I know I would very much prefer a series of chapters about people surviving (like the comic used to be) than never-ending cliffhangers.

The compendiums are probably better for pacing but there's no way I'm gonna wait that long, so I'm just gonna bitch at Kirkman for now.

The comic has never been stronger.

Negan has basically turned into the comic's protagonist, which I am fine with because he's low key maybe my favorite character in anything ever.

I want to see what happens when Maggie sees Negan doing his thing out of his cell. I'm also excited to see how Rick's view of Negan changes after Negan saved his life.

The Letterhacks for this issue suggests that Negan is going to be a character with some more mileage in him, which I'm okay with. It seemed like burying Luceille ended his plotline, but I'm not complaining. Nigga's been alive 64 issues already. I hope he destroys the saviors as a way to fully separate from his past and complete his redemption arc. If he kills beta too, I'm all for it.

Also, one other thing: what if Beta is the President of the United States? Or VP? Or some super prominent character of that world? I always wanted to see what happened to the U.S. government in this world.

That would be a funny reveal, someone rips of his mask and goes "Mr. President?" but he doesn't fit the profile (too young, not a talker, doesn't care for his leadership role, was totally subservient to alpha).

That might be a good end-game for the entire series, like they hear that China still has a sustainable society and they try to get there, and it's a Y: The Last Man style pilgrimage across the planet, but only one or two characters make it and realize they'll never fit back into modern civilization.

I hope Negan sticks around indefinitely because, well, he's an entertaining character, but also it's very cliche to have the reformed big bad die in some heroic self sacrifice.

He should be Rick's right hand man who makes the tough calls and does the dirty deeds Rick can't do, maybe even take over the leadership role entirely since he thrives on it while it takes a toll on Rick, which he would probably even prefer as long as Negan didn't go full fashy again.

Kirkman has always gone for the bleakly realistic route, e.g. people just die at random for no reason.

Although maybe a happy ending could be even though Carl and Lydia are riddled with PTSD, they have a child that's born into a modern society, and can live a normal happy life, and that's enough for them, mission accomplished.

What makes Negan such a great and compelling character? Overall a swear happy character whose favorite word is "Fuck" would be seen as tryhard or especially edgy especially in society nowadays.

I guess it's because he swear-happy but also really upbeat and funny, most of the time anyway. He's not edgy swearing, just creatively using language.

I think his appeal, as a character, is similar to that of The Punisher's.

He's got the hyper-masculine traits of total confidence and comfort with violence, but these traits that are usually unsavory are tempered with having strong morals and pro-social goals.

So you don't feel too uneasy about enjoying him committing brutal murders and being an asshole, but think it would be cool to be him or to know him.

The gaps of pretty much nothing between actual interesting stuff happening became too much.

Thinking about it though I was reading Invincible aswell so maybe I just got burnt out on Kirkman's way of pacing and spreading out story arcs.

As boring as TWD sometimes got Kirkman never seemed to fuck it up as badly as he did Invincible with his hard on for "how can I top the last big drama I wrote".
