Empowered takes a bit to get going, but I consider it a strong contender for best ongoing American comic. The characterization is good, Warren draws amazing fight scenes (especially the ninja ones), and it's got a nice balance of humor and suffering.
Of course, volume 1 is pretty much just bondage cheesecake with some decent humor and a hint of story to tie it together.

I've said this before, and I'll say it again:

The first four volumes of Empowered are Good Reads. Putting aside all the TnA in those 4 volumes (or any volume) the plot is *supposed* to be about the one super hero in the world with shitty/unreliable powers actually trying to make the world a better and safer place while most of her piers are either horrendous hypocrites, have their heads shoved up their own ego's ass, are sexual harrassers or *all of the above.* You feel bad for Emp, you want her to succeed and there's some funny stuff here and there, and a few amazing stories (my favorites are where she's trussed up and helps a henchman out with his crossword puzzle, and the amazing "Make a Wish" story.) By the end of the fourth volume, Emp herself gets a moment to fucking shine.

After that...however...

I gotta be honest. YMMV, but at that point Warren, bless his heart started trying *waaaay* too hard. A few good ideas here and there but rape (threatened/implied/otherwise) is leveled at both male and female characters, *alot* things get awful dark--FAST-- and it doesn't have the intended effect of making the story seem more serious or having reached a turning point.

It just comes off as going off the rails. Here was a super-hero spoof that had loads of fanservice (that wasn't shit like Spinnerette turned out to be) and the author went a little too far outside of pardoy. The artwork, however, remains fantastic through every. single. volume.

If your love of the artwork supersedes the plot declining, just keep buying them. If the plot intrigues you the most, you may want to stop at 4.

My favorite villain from the whole comic was that guy that just chloroforms people. He takes them down, takes a picture, and that's it. He even refused to help other villains kidnap heroes, he just gets off on putting people to sleep.

I read it all when it was story timed here back in November. I think the first volume doesn't feel too much like a continuous story cause Warren was still getting his footing with the series. However by the end of the second volume it all starts coming together. I enjoyed the storytimes so much that I plan on purchasing the physical copies.
