People love to see suffering and anguish more than smiles and comfort when interpreting something they deem intelligent. Grimdark is part of that transitioning process, though edgyness is always a dangerous road to easily cross into.

If it's a cutesy, lighthearted or children's series adults are compelled to grimdark it up.

If it's mature, edgy or dark autist are compelled to cuteify it and make it fluffy and shippy.
