Would adding a rogues gallery or more than one recurring villain make this no longer a magical girl show?
Is there a rule against a magical girl show having multiple antagonists that are not on the same side? Also, isn't this actually a superhero show *with magical girl influences* and therefore a natural place for a rogues gallery?

It is trying hard to be Sailor Moon/Cardcaptor Sakura in Paris.

the magical girl genre is really just a super hero show with less intelligence, less depth, and more fan service
Yes.
I dropped the show around episode 5 or 6, because even though I really enjoyed the characters and their interactions with one another, the whole episodic thing got old really fucking fast. Is it still like that later on?

Yeah. Season 2 promises to veer away from that though. If you want to pick it back up, you should watch the last 3 or so episodes of Season 1 (not including the origin episodes) for continuity reasons.

What are the episodes that everyone should watch up to this point?

There's continuity and character development sprinked throughout the whole season so I'm not sure what to recommend for an "abridged watchthrough" outside of the last 3 and Origins. "The Pharaoh" is a must though.
