Easily this. First time we get a glimpse into what the gems are. First decent fight scene. Pearl gets stabbed through the fucking chest, before audience knows gems reform. Decent humor with holo-pearl. Early enough that Steven is still solving gem problems by being human, rather than by learning to be a better gem. Nothing else has come close.

Finally somebody understands. For some reason people tend to choose most story-packed episodes like Jailbreak or We need to Talk, which reveal a lot of lore. I have never seen Steven the Swordfighter mentioned anywhere as a good episode. Yet it has this unique atmosphere, few episodes can come close too. It was hard to decide between this one and Space Race though, it was also gorgeous in its way, but not quite as brilliant as Steven the Swordfighter.

I enjoyed Space Race when I watched it, but I can't say it's really stuck with me like Steven the Sword Fighter. As for the Lore packed episodes, they have their place. I get how the ones that focus on telling the story would stand out in the minds of most viewers. I personally prefer the subtlety of some of the lighter, comfier episodes. I chose Steven the Sword Fighter because it strikes a great balance between the in-your-face lore revelations and the subtle aspects to be revisited later, while still being a lighthearted piece of work. No other episode since has done that as well as this one.
