From Captain Marvel 1 in like 2013 when they started trying to push her we are told she is a giant deal with a huge fanbase but outside of being an Avenger for years she did nothing to earn this. There was no moment that made her truly shine or stand out that she would garner such a fanbase or such respect. Sure she is an Avenger and people would like her but the way new books handle her its like she single highhandedly saved the earth from a world ending threat.

They are X-Men characters now and they don't rely on Carol and she doesn't rely on them.

That said she will most likely inherit Mar-Vell's villains, she already fought Yon-Rogg and Minerva and there has been a lot of emphasis on her being a half Kree lately.

There was also a shape shifting villain introduced in her comic recently so that might be a replacement for Mystique which would be a good idea on the writer's part.

Modern Carol *IS* the fix.
Pay attention: Way back in the long-long ago, Carol was the forgotten Avenger.
She had been Captain Marvel's sidekick, then she became an Avenger, then some writers got sick and tired of that progressive 1970s overreach of feminism, and lobotomized, then literally raped her out of the Avengers.
When she came back she was the alcoholic C-lister in the background of Avengers reunions.
That's where she was when DisAssembled and House-of-M gave her character a new empowered spotlight.
Next, and thank the Bendis for this, she became the lead character in Mighty Avengers and stayed a major Avenger ever since.
Now I can hear you thinking; "But Anon, I'm talking about the skimpy costume and Barbie-hair, why can't we have those nice things?"
The answer to that is that (A) Marvel has a compressed timeline, not a stopped timeline: you're asking for a middle-aged woman to dress like a twenty-year-old bikini model, credulity can become strained.
... and (B) the storyline right now is about Carol becoming the big scary might-makes-right oppressive superhero who overreaches. That Lez-hair and combat jumpsuit is part of the characterization of a superhero who's gone too far and become militarized ...

This is a prolonged storyline, follow it's progress, don't demand the story be undone to keep a status quo that wouldn't even exist without this storyline.

The first KSD run was my introduction too. The plane/war stuff mostly skimmed off of me, the art and the emphasis on legacy is what kept me interested. Made her feel like an important part of something so vast & deep (although maybe that's what you meant by confusing). Plus I liked her stubborn attitude.
For what it's worth the arc that all builds to (Enemy Within, #13/14, crosses over with another KSD's avengers comic) is what sold me on her being a genuinely admirable character. So maybe it's worth another look.

That said she's only been Captain Marvel for like 5 years. A lot of her cast/moments/etc. happened in the decades before that, of course you're not going to get much from 8 issues.

She gets dishonorably discharged from the military after the fiasco of Civil War 2, has to deal with depression and shame, gets mocked by the media after they shilled for her so hard, then Jessica helps her bounce back, since she had to do the same herself. Carol returns as a hero and probationary Avenger after eating a huge slice of humble pie in front of Stark, she gets a new costume, lets her hair grow out, and joins an Avengers subteam that deals with aliens alongside the Guardians so she can go do stuff in space, which she would want, because no one out there knows about CW2.

First off. they own the rights to all of those other characters to. One, allegedly two are even being used in upcoming live action projects. They're not being pushed as the lead lady purely because they're so goddamn obscure and lacking in source material to draw from. If you could push just ANY character into the limelight regardless of notoriety we'd have a far wackier MCU slate.
Secondly, between her own ongoings and her inheritance of the Captain Marvel name, Carol has every other competitor beat hands-down in that regard. Even the X-Men girls, none of them have much solo lore. And that's what Marvel looks for in a brand; how much they've got to work with. Otherwise they wouldn't have dragged their feet for so bloody long on the Ant-Man movie, or been so eager to do Avengers. Again; if IP depth doesn't matter, why not launch the MCU with a Young Gods movie instead?
Third, the lack of "iconic stories" or "baddass moments" or whateverthefuck people accuse Carol of goes for ALL Marvel super-heroines. Or at least would, if any one of them were chosen instead. If Monica had been chosen instead, everybody would suddenly act like Nextwave never existed and start praising the Reed's Secret Invasion tie-in to high heaven. All Marvel girls are on a relatively playing field; cool stories here and there if you dig, but historically irrelevant in the company's eyes. At least Carol has a few extra little bits of legitimacy to boost her up. Not to mention it's a long time coming; she was given powers in the first place back in the 70s so that she could be Marvel's premiere superheroine comic. Then the writer took potshots at the editor and it all got undone.

True but it's the sort of pep talk she needs as in "Stop fucking up and thinking you need to protect the world at the time" like when Jess forgives her but she won't stop and is hurting herself. The great thing about Stohl's writing in it is that she's not shying away from that a lot of people hate Carol and characters are giving her shit for it. Especially Brand (And of all the Marvel Universe. The one person you don't want to be chewed out by is Abigail fucking Brand) but it feels like there's something going on in the background with that.

Book's better than it has any right to be considering how badly they fucked up her character with CWII. But it feels like Stohl is knocking her down a few pegs to build her back up but the marketing team haven't got the memo yet and still keep going with the "Yass queen" bullshit.
