/co/ meet Ainbo, star of a new 3d feature from Peru.

>The ambitious feature stars Ainbo, a young indigenous girl living in the heart of the Amazon, protected by the Mother Spirit of the rainforest. When she learns that an ancient demon called Yacuruna is threatening her world — manifesting in deforestation and illegal mining — she joins forces with mythological creatures to come to the forest’s defense.

The plot sounds/is a generic ''technology bad nature good'' meme, the only thing I find appealing is the art style of the models, since is not like the crappy models from the 2000-2010 (or whatever was the year that other movie that deal with time traveling released). I hope they can at least make decent characters and include various creatures/characters from the Amazonian mythos.

I don't believe the Incas were as much into face painting as Amazonian tribes are; it would have been only for special occasions for the Inca, for special people, and I don't think it was typically that red face paint stereotypically shown.

The Incas did have contact with the Amazon, though, and parts of the Peruvian Amazon were within their empire. Some goods would have flowed from the Incas, and agricultural goods flowed out of the Amazon into the highlands, but it wouldn't have had much sway deeper into the Brazilian Amazon, nor were the Incas the type to just adopt local jungle people practices for their mainly mountainous empire.

This site has good brief summaries of gods, beasts, and saints from all sorts of mythologies, but you'll need to do further research yourself in most cases. Helpful due to having variant names for many mythical figures.

Incas are medieval Quechuas, the native peoples of Peru. Different race and culture. Amazonians are a collection of different races, languages and cultures spread all over the amazonas.

Quechuas and to a lesser extent Aymaras (bolivian-south peruvian natives) can be identified by very particular traditional wool clothing (poncho and that funny pointy hat) and they live in the altiplano / andes region in the mountains. While amazonians in general never produced textiles. You can't exactly lump amazonians together, however, the popular perception of them is defined by the red face paint many eastern amazonians traditionally use for festivities and other events. Most central and western amazonian tribes are actually uncontacted, save for some tribes in amazonian peru.

It's very possible there was a cultural exchange >>89391714 pointed out, but the actual Tawantinsuyu empire was in fact a mix of roman type cultural assimilation and mongol "take all that's useful conscript all the rest" conquest. People who knew crafts were taken to the capital while others were taught sun worship (which was common on the peruvian/equador region but not organised), so any exchange was probably outwards toward the amazona.

Wikipedia is a good start, from there you'll need to read books as most archaeological material is currently being studied with lots of sweet sweet tombs being uncovered in the last 20 years.

Actually, there aren't too many records of warfare before the Incas pretty much genghis khan'd most of the sa andes. there are however records of fierce cultural competition within what is mainly city states. There's a few known pre medieval kingdoms and there's a recorded total collapse of the agricultural system in the classical era, but all those guys are a mystery.

>Occupied cities and their inhabitants were usually well treated if they surrendered without resistance. However, if the enemy did resist then they could suffer a number of punishments depending on the degree of resistance offered. If a city or tribe surrendered and then rebelled the Inca could even authorize the complete annihilation of the city or ethnic group (as was the case with the Pastos and the Punaeños).

>but I would like to know what would have happen if the Incas had more time to develop their culture and technology

Well, everything about this would be highly speculative. But I'll try.

I don't think the Incas would have been around forever, or even much longer than the run they had, but the complexity of their civilization was on par with plenty of Old World civilizations 1,000-2,000 before them. If they'd had more time to develop an Athens, who knows what could have happened?

Geography, a shittier selection of domesticatable animals, and the lack of writing were clear handicaps the Incas would have to overcome. The first would only be partially surmountable with a pedigree of centralization -- as with the Incas -- making it possible to transmit ideas, goods, and power across vast distances in order to both maximize exposure to and of new ideas, and to allow for new wellsprings of civilization to begin bubbling far enough that one famine, one war, wouldn't ruin everything.

The second, poor livestock options, could be partially surmountable given just how good Amerindians were at domesticating and growing plants: corn and potatoes are less labour intensive and dependent on geography as things like rice, and are both easy to store and store a lot of energy themselves; further good varieties of root crops, fruits, and grains and easy access to a variety of biomes within walking distance also would give development a nutritional and labour advantage. These latter two points are necessary for things like bored nobility and wealthy landowners sitting around all day and coming up with philosophy.

As for the written word? The quipu was in use as a recording device, and standardized systems of weights and measures for trade were a thing: both were strong factors in the development of cuneiform in Mesopotamia. Also, Mesoamerica (namely, but not limited to the Maya around Mexico) had writing, so there's a chance it could have spread.
>>
>>89394537
the mongols did it too.

they revolutionized international commerce via pax mongolica. it only cost a few hundred cities and all their inhabitants.

> time to develop their culture and technology

This depends on them not collapsing under their own weight. The inca empire was growing too fast, probably to the point it would have overextended administration wise.

> sound like they where more competent and advanced than, say, the Aztects and Mayans

The andes peoples were very unique. Unique terrain led to highly specialized technologies (ie farming) that didn't favour settlement outside those highly specialized terrains.

technology wise they were all hopelessly archaic. metalworking existed in the form of shaping raw metal but the lack certain key elements i'm at a loss to name didn't lead them to develop in more general terms

My guess is: lack of mineable copper / iron, (therefore body armor) and horses, never arising the need of cavalry and complex metal-tipped weaponry to penetrate them, which became the basis of all old world armies. Lack of hard-to-defend plains never led to the development of complex architecture like the mesopotamians and mediterraneans needed to. The worse was that they never had the need to develop complex theoretical knowledge such as mathematics - but I actually don't have the faintest idea of what you need to get people to naturally develop math

Bureaucracy & administration wise, the tawanti was one of the most advanced nations seen at the time, and probably for a couple hundred years until maritime empires were well set. The Mesoamericans were centralized empires based on city states, and didn't care much about the administration of conquered peoples. This ultimately led to the collapse of the mexica when Cortes arrived.

Law wise, I know very little of it. The lack of writing probably factored in because they never went beyond city states until very recently, so most stuff could be handled via messenger and local elites.

>>89395618
So, what you two are saying is, the Incas were 1,000-2,000 late to compete with civilizations like Ancient Greek, Ancient Egypt and so on.

So, have the Inca Empire started around the same time these Civilization had, they would have had a chance 8-and maybe more time) to develop further (say, they develop writing, maths and complex metal-working) and went beyond city states. Could they have beaten the Spanish, or would they still gotten beaten?

You're asking a lot of what-ifs. Sure, if we throw in a bunch of random technology and developments that they were at best centuries away from, and perhaps never would have, they would have been fine.

Except for the fact that disease is estimated to have wiped out up to 95% of the population of the Americas within the first century of contact, which is a huge factor in how the Spanish were able to take down empires with only a few dozen men.

Instead of your what-ifs, picture this: the Norse don't leave L'anse aux Meadows in modern-day Canada around 1000 AD. Instead, they stick around, and a small, medieval trade route now forms between Norse Europe and Norse America. European diseases hit the Americas five centuries earlier, but European technology and society doesn't make it viable for them to do much in the way of grand, trans-Atlantic colonisation, so the peoples of the Americas are able to develop natural immunity to disease and continue their civilisations somewhat close to where they left off.

At this point, these civilisations have a viable shot at not getting wrecked come 1492. If you want to go even more fanfic: Imagine some tech flows across the Atlantic, then south across the Americas. Perhaps the Christian Norse's contact with natives, combined with the Norsemen's already significant cultural distance from the Catholic Pope in Rome, results in them taking a more relaxed, trade-focused approach to engaging with the natives?

i recall some history books mentioning that the Inca and one of his brothers were "struggling" for the throne just before the spaniards arrived.
>>
>>89372685
It could be way worse. At least they're not Brazil.
>>
>>89395772
That's a big question

In theory the Incas could have simply overwhelmed Pizarro with sheer numbers. Problem is, they were in the middle of a succession war, and managed kidnap the more retarded of the warring brothers and convinced him to give them literal boatload of gold in exchange of freedom, then proceeded to kill him. That gold convinced the Spanish crown that the Andes were prime colonization lands (then they discovered potatoes and that sealed the deal)

With his brother dead, the Sapa Inka just decided to let the Spaniards be, who proceeded to get a couple armies on land and take the empire city by city with enough numbers and organisation (fucking pike squares how do i counter them) the Incas didn't stand a chance. And that's not taking into account pike & shot companies that they Incas had nothing against. The conquered peoples were then put on slavery to mine the ridiculous silver & gold deposits that the Andes had. Shortly after the results of the great Atlantic biological exchange wiped out most of the Americas' natives

However also mind there weren't any major battles I can recall like the Mesopotamian had. No idea why. The conquest was very slow and took a couple hundred years to finish. In fact the last of the Incas were defeated by the time the seeds of independence were beginning to grow. The Spaniards never really tried to conquer the land, just it's resources.

If the Spaniards didn't arrive at such a timely manner, their initial foothold would have been burned to the ground, and chances are the crown would be very worried about whatever power keeps killing their soldiers. however, ultimately it's only a matter of time. The Spaniards were colonizing all the continent and if they didn't come from the sea, they would have come from Chile and the Pampas.

>>89396068
that's a very interesting approach. Would have been nice for that to happen.

Though I don't think the initial armies were post-disease. Cortes i'm pretty sure wasn't.
>>
>>89381124
And no one likes that shit.
>>
>>89396310
Yeah, both the emperor and his heir died of smallpox brought over by the Europeans, and the Inca didn't have great plans for succession. So two younger sons fought during a time of massive disease, which of course made it easy-peasy for the Spaniards to cross the entire empire with their relatively advanced technology.

>>89396352
You're right in that Cortes wasn't post-disease: the lesson of the Aztecs is to not be assholes to your neighbouring city states, otherwise they'll dump you for alien invaders the first chance they get. But Tawantinsuyu was wrecked by disease first and foremost.

>that's a very interesting approach. Would have been nice for that to happen.
Thanks, but I'm not sure I'd want it to happen, if only because everything in our world would be different. It's history, it happened.

>The Spaniards were colonizing all the continent and if they didn't come from the sea, they would have come from Chile and the Pampas.
If I'm remembering correctly, the Inca may have already heard about the Spanish being in Río de la Plata -- i.e. to the east -- before they started dealing with them in the north. Just goes to show how they were slowly being surrounded.
>>
>>89395888
It's not just people; he used a language specifically used on /pol/
>>
> First, the disease that crippled Mexico may have been native to Central America. The invaders were equally affected and could not recognise the symptoms. The Aztecs did and they had given it a name long before the Spanish arrived because it had already dramatically reduced their numbers. They called it Cocoliztli and biologists today identify it as a form of Ebola spread by rats.
