Yeah, this not being brought up is probably because this is still a kids show with a simple story: "Five heroes use their robot lions to fight a space emperor." He's a "prince" but in this series Zarkon's been running his empire for 10,000 years, how long has Lotor been the heir apparent? What's the point of having a line of succession if Zarkon is planning on sitting on the throne forever? And Lotor, being groomed for a position of power that he'll never obtain as long as his father continues to sustain his life forever, I'd be disappointed if this particular issue wasn't brought up with Lotor's introduction in season 3. I was almost certain Lotor was behind the Galra insurrection since the end of season 1.

Think about it for a second: this entire time Zarkon was in direct command, where was Lotor? People come up with shit like partying or prison, but what if he was expanding the Galra empire on the frontier?

Here's a theory: Zarkon can't be everywhere. Lotor acts as a proxy for Zarkon, in a perpetual crusade of Galra conquest and rulership of distant stars where be and daddy can stay out of one another's way. Lotor has autonomy in his methods of expansion and his governance of these distant territories, and as Zarkon's well groomed flesh and blood he is singularly capable of handling this task.

Haggar treats it like a big deal, and a punishment even, that she should have to summon Lotor to fill in for his father. His ambition is still there, but Lotor is kept in check because space is practically infinite and thus he always has somewhere else to be and someone else to kill. All this successor bullshit is probably in mind for Lotor, but Zarkon doesn't have to see it that way for Lotor to be useful in other ways.

And beyond his duties as Zarkon's reach, lastly as an emergency replacement/substitute to keep the Empire going if shit gets crazy, which it did.

Korra did not have a dub, but weirdly enough the show did have a decent sized fandom in Japan.

I don't think that Lotor is a prince in the traditional way.

With his dad going full evil Emperor mode, I can say that this Lotor will be unlike his GoLion incarnation, or his dub incarnation, or any other previous incarnation.

If the whole dead Altean lover of Zarkon will be true (and that Alteans were assholes, but probably more the nobility and such), then I'd see Lotor being something like Prince from Prince of Persia...but in space. And a adventurer/anti-Zarkon renegade to boot.
