Which mystery show do you think is better Mystery Inc or Gravity Falls?
>>
>>89290510
Both jump the shark at the end, but Mystery Inc. resolves in a satisfying way.
My vote goes to Skooks because it had the time to run its course and did so in a way that doesn't leave you wondering why the fuck some little girl ruined the world and never suffered any repercussions.

How's Mystery Inc jump the shark?

Mystery Inc was never as good as /co/ claims it to be, the ending wasn't great, and it wasn't dark in any meaningful way. Yes it was cool to have a serialized Scooby Doo, but stop pretending that it was some masterpiece. Being adequate doesn't make something worth watching two seasons of, and I never got any of the payout I expected

Gravity Falls on the other hand was consistently great through season 2A. 2B was almost entirely garbage outside of vs the future. Unlike Mystery Inc, people actually like GF and still shitpost about it to this day. We still get smut and we still have to talk about why it was shit and the manlet is shit.

Season 2B #notmygravityfalls

Why is it that Pops dies but Mabel lives?
>>
>>89290573
I don't think most people would have nearly as much of a problem with Mabel had she just apologized and felt guilty for causing the apocalypse and nearly killing everybody she loves.

It doesn't necessarily HAVE to be "I'm the worst person who ever lived, I don't deserve to be alive, just erase me from existence and do the whole world a favor" levels of guilt, as much as I'd like to see that, but I'd be fine with "I really, really, REALLY messed up and I have a lot to make up for" levels.
>>
>>89291176
What's tumblry about it?
>>
Mystery Inc
>>
Both are good but Mystery Inc. really is just Gravity Falls without the pitfalls Gravity Falls suffered from.

GF at its peak had better jokes but in general Mystery Inc. was a straight improvement.
>>
As much as I hated everything about Gravity Falls season 2b and that manlet Hirsch, it's outright insulting to it to compare it to any Boring Doo series.
>>
>>89292417
As much as I hated everything about Mystery Inc's last few episode. It's outright insulting to it to compare it to any Tumblr series.
>>
>>89292162
Pretty much this.
>>
>>89292579
Gravity Falls doesnt have enough non-white characters to be considered tumblr.

Hell both of Dipper's major love interests were thin white girls thats a big tumblr no no.
>>
>>89290510
I hated that mystery inc fell for the reincarnation gag. It would've have been fine if there had one or two prior mystery gangs, but a whole bunch just ruins the story. For the first half of the show everything was grounded in human action and reason and by the end we find out that all these human mysteries are explained by some supernatural superdimensional satan figure. All this in a universe without a god.

It's a terrible message: Humans are innately good and are only ever bad because of supernatural tampering.
>>
>>89291038
I agree.

>>89291176
>Tumblry falls
That doesn't even make sense.

>>
>>89292834
>by the end we find out that all these human mysteries are explained by some supernatural superdimensional satan figure
Suprisingly, that's what most people on /co/ seemed to like about it.
>>
>>89292931
/co/ is fickle and easily distracted.
>>
>>89290510
Gravity Falls never explained much of anything. It too had a superdimensional satan figure, but he was responsible for everyone's sins like in mystery inc.

The worst part of gravity falls is that no character development is ever completed. The lumberjack girl is just a gimmick. Robbie is just an agnsty teen. Mabel is just the worst. Dipper is just a know it all. Uncle Stan is the only one to undergo character development. Pacifica becomes a better person than mabel.
>>
>>89292998
*wasn't responsible*
>>
Mystery Inc was better, but that reincarnation shit and the ending were stupid.
>>
>>89293056
>>89293043
Sorry, yeah that was a typo.

There were too many subplots that were left unresolved. The whole end of the world plot seemed like an excuse not to wrap up any body's story, but just end with a convoluted high stakes scenario that didn't really resolve much.
The hinting at ford's existence was probably the best part of the whole show. That and the northwest family.
>>
>>89292417
Have you watched mystery inc.? It's distinctly different from otger scooby doo series. Like GF it had overarching mysteries, seemingly supernatural occurrences, and a superdimensional being. They are worthy of comparision.
>>
I haven't seen much of Mystery Ink but did it really have as many clues and things you could decipher as Gravity Falls did?
>>
>>89292834
I don't really think that was the message. I think it's just part of a larger meta joke about Scooby Doo and Hanna Barbera as a whole.

The joke being that even the universe itself is locked into the HB formula of talking animals and lame mystery shows. And the trend towards the actual supernatural at the end reflects Scooby-Doo's real world history and trending towards the actual supernatural. The reset is just one massive meta joke about the show's placement in the larger Scooby continuity and how no matter what it always gets back to basics after jumping up its own ass when it comes to the supernatural.

And the myriad cultural references in the show are about how Scooby shows (and HB shows as a whole) always absorb whatever's trendy. And a show made in an era that's obsessed with nostalgia and the retro would be untethered from any sense of real time and regurgitate the last half century of pop culture irrespective of context or accuracy.

I may be giving them too much credit though. But this is what I've always gotten from MI.

As for if it's better than GF? Well it's more consistent at least. But GF has higher highs. But GF also has lower lows. That's just my opinion though. Take that as you will.
>>
>>89293493
Yeah, it makes sense as meta-commentary, but it entirely fails as a joke. If a show is going to be meta, it mustn't take itself seriously. MI was always serious and grim. So the meta joke was just infuriating.
>>
>>89291038
GF's season 1 is extremely overrated. Season 2 first half was fucking amazing and fixed the shit from the previous one but after the Author appeared the series dropped the ball.
>>
>>89293627
The serious grimness helped the humor for me. But I'm also a person who didn't find Gravity Falls to be all that funny and that it tended to be too wacky. I don't seem to take the same things from comedies that many others do. Or find the same things humorous. So it's probably just down to taste.
>>
>>89292834
>For the first half of the show everything was grounded in human action and reason and by the end we find out that all these human mysteries are explained by some supernatural superdimensional satan figure.

The supernatural angle was both hinted at before and it was an effective way to raise the stakes.
>>
>>89293725
I'm not saying that it didn't have funny jokes, that bit about fred lovings traps and ceasing to be a man made me laugh out loud. I'm saying the meta commentary was tacky and lame.
>>
>>89292162
This
>>
>>89293826
I disagree, in the beginning you had the gang foiling human plots and proving that all tge supernatural occurrences had rational explanations caused by humans. By the end all the human actions were caused by some superdimensional satan. It's a cop out that redeems all the evil actions done by all the characters because satan made me do it. The whole story might as well nit have happened, and as a result, it never did.
>>
>>89293833
No, what I'm saying is that the meta commentary was humorous enough for me and worked near perfectly for what I wanted out of the series. While I don't find GF to be all that funny as it essentially moves out of my humor range after Summerween outside a few spare jokes here and there.

In the end I got exactly what I wanted out of MI and even some things I didn't realize I'd ever want. But I didn't get much of what I wanted out of GF.

I wanted a cartoonishly absurd Eerie Indiana with an overarching story out of GF. Instead I got a wacky romp with the supernatural that didn't even bother to wrap up its character arcs in a manner I found satisfying.

It was still a lot of fun and I accept it on its own merits and for what it actually is. But it isn't what I wanted which is why I don't like it as much. But for those episodes that did fit that EI mold? Well, I doubt I'll ever get a long-form cartoon that gets that close to my tastes again.
>>
>>89294028
Your assertion is almost entirely correct, so i have nothing more to add.
>>
>>89291195
>pops died for out sins
>mabel lives with hers
>>
Mystery Inc.

At the end, everything got resolved and there was no Mabel situation like in the GF finale.

I love GF but Mabel ruined it for me in the finale.

I've been trying to convince all of my friends who love Gravity Falls to give Mystery Incorperated a shot but very few do. I think its mystery is done a lot better.
