Does anyone on /co/ like VG cats? It's pretty bad not only for a webcomic, but bad by vidya comic standards.

>>89167593
Didn't Scott skip the 200th comic because he had something big planned for it that wasn't ready, but then never got around to posting anything at all?
I also remember when he burned his forum to the ground because a new user (who hadn't even been around for more than a week or something) made a thread about how disappointing the latest comic was.
Which was a shame, since the VG Cats message board was actually pretty fuck'n good. It was basically Something Awful Lite.
VG Cats: The furry Penny Arcade wannabe that never made it.
I can barely believe it's still going after all this time. Does the author have nothing else to do?
>>89167144

>>89171473
I thiiink Scott makes his primary income off of pop culture reference t-shirts these days? I can't imagine the comic makes much in ad revenue anymore.
I assume he must be doing something else on the side though. Especially since he's got at least one kid to support. Unless his wife is the primary breadwinner of the family.
>>89171122
Prequel is genuinely good, aside from how incestuous threads are. And how it updates less than once a year these days.
I feel like that every video game-themed webcomic comedy strip rapidly loses its appeal when you turn 18.
>takes him so long to draw that by the time it comes out every joke has been done to death
Loved it once. Then he started changing his artstyle and scrapping 20 different comics a week.
No I only check the site out of some bizarre sense of loyalty.
I used to absolutely love them but the increasingly sporadic updates got too ridiculous and I stopped giving a shit. The pokemon comic was especially irritating since he's go so long without an update only for the new page to be some random shot of someone looking around or something.
Don't know if any of the old jokes still hold up once the rose tinted glasses are off, but man the new strips really suck ass.
>>89171122
Prequel is great, it likes exploring the whole webcomic/text adventure format and is pretty creative. If you can make it past the big hurdle near the start (you'll know it when you get to it) then you'll find the rest of the story getting better and better.
Only downside is the next update isn't planned until the universe descends into entropy, fades to nothing, and then reforms from the void. Each cycle brings us one new update.
>>89171886
>Only downside is the next update isn't planned until the universe descends into entropy, fades to nothing, and then reforms from the void. Each cycle brings us one new update.
Prequel feels like a very smallscale Homestuck.
I say this as someone who has never read Homestuck and is only vaguely familiar with its fandom.

VG Cats comes from a very, very early age of the internet where very few actual cartoonists used it. As a result stuff like VG Cats actually looked somewhat impressive, since the alternative was MSPaint /b/ comics or horrible deviantart sprite shit.
VG Cats art has improved somewhat, but it's obvious the artist is really just polishing a turd. His fundamentals are total crap, he can't tell a joke and in the modern hyper-competent (though libtard-infested) internet artist scene he just can't compete.

Since it was a way to basically write/draw loli cheesecake but still try and distance yourself from the fact you're pandering to pedophiles. Blatant hypocrisy, I guess.
>>89167144
It's cute, but not especially funny. The only aspect of the comic that is slightly cringe-worthy is the specific reoccurring with that grey kitten's obsession with Dark Souls.
But that's mostly because it plays on the false notion that Dark Souls is only accessible for the most "hardcore" of gamers.
>>89189527
His slice of life strips from Aeris and Leo in their youth have always been the most popular ones. It's a shame that Scott feels so paralyzingly insecure about story arcs.
I wouldn't even want to have it turn into some teen romance garbage. Even if it was just cute nostalgia-bait with some slight characterization here and there.

Possible and maybe likely, but it's true that it does give a character dynamic for his loli cheesecake character. Otherwise the comic just devolves into pin-ups.
Plus it makes it easier to put it behind him. He's apparently already ditched this "fursona" shit and this layer of "distance" between him and the loli cheesecake probably makes it easier.

Psy was basically exposed as a pedophile that's been trying to fuck underage girls online for years. It's apparently been an awkward point of tension between him and his close circle of buddies all this time.
One of the girls he use to flirt with ended up going public with the scandal (along with a few other girls he use to talk to, I think), and his buddies all pretty much reacted with "Yeah, he's kind of a piece of shit."
Psy's response was to point out that he hadn't *technically* raped anyone, and that all his mistakes are just the fault of alcohol and vague personal issues.

Hah, hoh boy. It always amazed me how B&G sprouted into its own little webcomic empire, hosting a bunch of artists, comics, and flash cartoons on the site.
Also, printing out comics to have them around with you has probably become obsolete now that everyone can just save pics and browse on their phones.

I don't remember that, but I think I probably lost tough with the comic at some point.
I do remember that it started with a shitty recolor of the Mega Man 7 sprite with Roll's pony tail pasted on it but one of the other comic author made her a really nice one, altered enough to be distinctive.
>>89196028
>one of the other comic author made her a really nice one, altered enough to be distinctive.
There seemed to be a lot of collaboration and sharing of characters when it came to sprite comics.
This made understanding Mega Man canon very confusing for me at the time, since I had barely played the games. For a short while I thought "The Cataclysm" was an actual thing in the games.

This. It has a nice story arc, great set-up, consistent comedy that rarely drops, and a great ending

Zelda Comic was the first one I really got into.
I've never met someone else who read it.
It was quite lame anyway.

Yeah, I also get the same feeling and I too can't say where exactly. I think it's more obvious in SUPER EFFECTIVE.

The guy who wrote Bob and George is a physicist, he got his degree while making the comic every day. Guy is pretty cool.
Honestly I liked it when I first stumbled across it. I was a wee lad that still visited newgrounds on occasion. I think I even have the rat flail and chocobo inbreeder shirts in a box somewhere.
I was pretty new to the webcomic scene as a whole and I had a very sheltered, internet free childhood so I had nothing really to compare it to. I forgot how I even found it.
I like it because it makes me nostalgic of being a kid, but yeah its a shitshow.

Yes, yes it is.
>>89199870
Kids don't have a broader range of art to compare it to or anything, usually. Or even if they do, they're too young to even think about comparing good art vs bad art.

I'm pretty sure he even drew a sketch of Leo with massive lactating breasts at one point.

Update hatred aside, Prequel is top-tier. Better if you know Elder Scrolls, best if you know Oblivion really well.
Still completely accessible and enjoyable either way.
Also, the author is really good at NOT caving in to cliché or the fanbase’s ideas about where the plot should go.

Apparently "black out" is a mistranslation from 目の前が真っ暗になる (lose hope, lit. plunge into darkness). A couple of gens, notably gen III, changed it up with 目の前が真っ白になる (plunge into white), though I have no idea what that's equivalent to in English or why it was changed.

I think StumbleUpon brought me to VG cats back in like 2008(?). I enjoyed it, good memories. I would have been ~17 at the time. I distinctly remember Aeris being the first furry type character that confused me sexually. In some panels my penis knew what it wanted but my brain wouldn't let me devolve into that kind of degeneracy. I would just sit there and stare with such conflict in me. I never actually fapped to her but I've fallen from grace since then to other stuff.

I never read Homestuck (aside from the prologue, which I bounded off of), but they seem like very different beasts. Both follow the format of allowing readers to suggest how the comic progresses, but the focus and tone seem worlds apart. Homestuck appears to be some sorta massive odyssey spanning across a multiverse of worlds and characters. Prequel is hyperfocused on a single character's relatively mundane attempt at not being a complete fuck-up.
Prequel is certainly more accessible.

That sums up about half the webcomics I use to follow. And is probably why I can't even remember most of their names. I remember one was about an anime and coffee shop, where most of the characters were flirty as fuck? Kinda seemed like a harem comic of sorts.
