There's no Red and Blue double characters in the comic it's just one class for each generation of Team Fortress teams.

So it's just TF2 Spy being TF2 Scout's father.

I think all the TF2 characters in the comic wear red except Engie who wears blue and all of the Team Fortress Classic characters wore blue.

And yeah Scout is part french

There's less-plausible stuff in the TF2-verse than 5-year-olds procreating. Granted, it's pretty obvious that Spy is Scout's biological father, but still.

You know Scout will never do the math and realize it's impossible, so it's perfect

Conversely he does do the math (or has someone do it for him) and just assumes that even a 5 year old Tom Jones is just that much of a stud

Yeah if they would have wanted it to be Tom Jones they would have made some shit up like Tom Jones being born as an adult or some Highlander shit.

I honestly like Spy being the dad especially with how they did the reveal, also it makes him spending most of his last hours alive trying to teach Scout how to get a date with Miss Pauling more believable.

There's a charm in the storyline for TF2. It's funny and bizarre as shit but makes sense.
The OW webcomics are too short and never give me the impact for what TF2 did. Some stuff we kinda know is revealed via voice lines in the game and in the shorts. But, why does no one talk about the Planet Of The Apes senario that's happening on the moon?

I don't feel the community feeling I did for TF2. Then again, it has gone downhill for me after a few years now. At least the latest comic was great.

This. OW characters have so much potential that goes nowhere, then we have the TF2 comic where Medic gets out of a deal with the devil by surgically putting more souls into himself.

TF2 just does much more with what it's given.
>>
>>89125320
The TF2 comics are great because the characters are all violently insane retards, kind of like you figure they would have to be in order to repeatedly compete in bloodsport combat for no real reason.

Blizzard is willing to do the lel so fanny maymays with their characters, but at the end of the day they want their characters to retain some semblance of seriousness in case they ever get to take whatever sci-fi superhero story they originally had in mind with the setting and do it for real.

It's just Blizzard refuse to put effort in things because no one gives a shit about anything anyway. Good old "appeal to a wider target audience". I mean, how much people actually know about tf2 universe, read comics and played the game? I bet barely 30% of the playerbase does. Valve just throwing so much time and resources away and some executives from Blizzard would just neck themselves if someone do that. And the saddest thing of all is that the most talented and experienced developers just sitting on their asses doing jack shit because it's unprofitable and instead making some retarded PG-13 tf2 clone with tits. Truly the worst times for industry.

Honestly some of the best comics I've read. Took them two years to finally post the update but it was worth the wait.
The TF2 cast is filled with extraordinarily well defined characters. Looking back at the game's initial release I'm surprised at just how much of a long way these characters have come since then. It's stellar character design. The characters are simple and that's why they work so well.
It's an absurd setting but that's what is fun about it. Things like the Medic surviving a deal with the devil by stitching the other mercs' souls to himself, Demoman's liver defeating the robots through alcohol poisoning. The comic knows how to pull off serious moments but it never loses sight of it's absurdity and I love it for it.

I wish other games had this kind of dedication to character and world building and to being comedic.

sticking shit there that has no specific need to be there. see also: greebling, except greebling helps make boring areas interesting while OW is just "buckles and buttons and glowy bits everywhere"

one of the best things valve did with TF2 (at least originally) was make their characters so immediately recognizable, yet also not overly detailed and designed to draw the eye around them to the torso and head

scout has less details on his entire body than tracer has on her jacket and backpack, demo doesn't have hazard stripes and loose bolts and chains everywhere, engi doesn't have "BAMF" on his belt buckle (which turns into an unreadable mess of pixels at about ten feet away), etc.

Of course not! Blizzard Entertainmentâ„¢ may have been inspired by innumerable other video games, movies and forms of media, but everything their amazing and honestly underpaid artists touch turns into such pure gold that I'm literally masturbating RIGHT NOW! So many waifus to choose from! Monkeys in space! Robot monks! SO many neon lights! The vistas and the action! The Mazda Miata is the best car! Rogue One is the best movie! Blizzardâ„¢ is the best company! AHRHGNHGHHH

Nah, back when the team actually gave a shit about the game, they'd keep popular glitches in the game in one way or another.

>Fixed Announcer Overtime bug on KOTH servers using mp_timelimit (this bug involves "Overtime" being announced constantly during Overtime instead of once when it begins).

that's what happens when you give all your characters super-intricate visual designs and long, interwined backstories, but forget to give them actual personalities beyond a single trait
>>
>>89133245
>Robot monks!

I'm still butthurt about the fact that he's such a potentially interesting character, yet he gets sidelined because writers only care about him as an accesory to Genji, and Genji is only allowed development related to Hanzo and Mercy.

Nah TF2 designs are pretty simple actually. In fact they're all just really bold stereotypes except Demoman

well now that's just blatantly untrue. you could learn a lot through any character's personality through the hours of recorded voice lines that each character has, especially the domination lines and also the meet the team videos. also the character designs are a work of absolute ingenuity, i highly recommend looking at this here at it showcases the sheer amount of thought that went into every single character design.

>>89133625
To be fair, that happened over several years and they didn't have backstories when the game came out.
>>
>>89133696
This. TF2 didn't use "look at all this lore!" as one of its selling points.
>>
>>89133625
Backstory != current story, though, and some characters still have it more than others. Even then it's basically a short paragraph with none of the specific events/character intertwining/unironic good and evil shit from OW.

>Medic is a mad doctor from Nazi-era Germany who lost his medical license and has no idea what the Hippocratic Oath is
>Scout is a young punk from a big family who ran everywhere so he could beat his brothers to the fight
>Soldier isn't an actual Soldier due to getting kicked out of every branch of the military, but bought his own plane ticket to fight anyway- years after the war was over
>Engineer has a dozen PhDs in hard science and a decade in the oil fields to help him find the most practical way to shoot somebody a lot
>Sniper is a professional (an actual one, apparently) who still argues with his parents about his job choice
etc.

They're silly tidbits that are just meant to introduce the character, no huge overarching plot like in OW- and even when that plot finally became a thing in TF2, it's largely relegated to comic-only characters and plot devices, not the classes themselves who are still nine maniacs with guns blowing each other up over nothing.
>>
>>89133696
It's totally a retcon, absolutely. The Redmond and Blutarch conflict is entirely an afterthought, only "Reliable Excavation Demolition" and "Builders League United" existed with no explanation of why.
>>
>>89133711
I wish I could find the bit used on the old TF2 site's Meet the Team video page before all the Saxton Hale stuff, the one about "it's the middle of a century much like the one we just had: there are five radio stations, three television channels, and two mega-conglomerates that secretly control every government in the world."

So fucking simple and yet so effective.
>>
I really hope they can get all the voice actors back to make motion comics out of these.

>>89133666

>>89133736
tf2 used to be about two corporations that controls the world's entire government fighting each other while trying to hide in plain sight
>>
>>89133724
>and even when that plot finally became a thing in TF2, it's largely relegated to comic-only characters and plot devices
You could say the exact same about Overwatch. Not a single thing from those OW comics has an effect on the game world. Only audio clips suggest these characters interact outside of shooting each other. They have that in common with TF2.
>>
>>89133666
>http://www.valvesoftware.com/publications/2008/GDC2008_StylizationWithAPurpose_TF2.pdf

This gave me a character design boner.
>>
>>89133805
This is mostly true, but a lot of the interactions do rely heavily on backstory and the characters tend to remind each other of things from the past, and some of them require you to actually dig into said backstory to understand the context.
>>
>>89133805
but then why make such a big deal about the lore? of the overwatch videos i've seen, they're less about establishing the characters and giving them personalities or whatever, and more about just dumping the lore and setting on us because otherwise how could we possibly know what's even happening. tf2 is so over the top and tongue in cheek that you don't really need to know what's happening, the tone lends itself well to the lack of knowledge. overwatch's tone is really all over the place and inconsistent. like in the same universe's lore you apparently have a mechanic dwarf, a sentient gorilla from space or something, a woman who was brainwashed into murdering her own husband, a gamer girl in a mech suit from one of my japanese animes, and a guy who dresses up like a skeleton and expects to be taken seriously. it's all over the place.
>>
>>89133776
No, don't ignore it, there's good stuff in that pdf about how they developed the characters silhouette first and used simple stuff like gradiented colors and folds of clothing to draw the player's eye where they wanted it.

>>89133805
The OW characters themselves have the ridiculously intricate backstories is what I'm talking about. This guy was part of this secret group that also had this guy who fought that guy who comes from here where he met that guy and so on and so forth. It's wasted effort in an attempt to make it look DEEP when it's just so, so boring.

The most between-character backstory you'll get in TF2 is Spy is Scout's dad and even that was added later.

>Only audio clips suggest these characters interact outside of shooting each other. They have that in common with TF2.
And even there TF2's ingame banter is absolute leagues above OW's, in no small part due to being from a different era of game design where it was okay to have characters call each other jackasses, chucklenuts and big ugly girls without having to pander to the lowest common denominator who might get offended over someone exploding into chunky giblets.

>>89133815
If you haven't already, look up the developer commentary for the maps and character designs, it's fantastic stuff not just for graphic design but also for game design, map design, audio design, and so on.

Then become sad when you realize most of the people in those recordings aren't at Valve anymore and those nine years of development were forgotten for hats and money.
>>
>>89133382
Overwatchfag here. I've never played TF2, and even I know that's a blatant lie.
>>
>>89133905
>they're less about establishing the characters and giving them personalities or whatever, and more about just dumping the lore and setting on us
I actually like learning about the OW world they live in. Lord knows their characters aren't interesting enough.

>it's all over the place.
True, but I kind of enjoy the spontaneousness of design. It's like a fighting game, where the characters are just everywhere across the map.
>>
>>89132771
It's better to have more map detail then blood

Also, if you think OW is visually cluttered, you've never played Battleborn.
>>
>>89133492
How do you remove blood from a game that has no human characters?
>>
You know what REALLY bothers me about OW? How little thought was put into making omnics sympathetic.

> omnics are people, too!
> people that can be brainwashed into killing machines by factories we (or they) fully understand
> and this can happen even to friendly, harmless omnics
> also, they have special magic-like energy that's basically the equivalent of a religious experience
>>
>>89134038

*don't fully understand

damn it.
>>
so is /co// gonna have good overwatch threads or what i just realized this moved on from tf2
>>
>>89134038
I'm hoping they work more on that, maybe there'll be a new omnic hero down the line and they'll flesh that out better.
>>
>>89134113
the worst part is they don't NEED a new omnic hero, Zenyatta is a damn monk. He's the perfect vehicle to explore the "do omnics count as having free will if there are cases they clearly don't?". It's also canon that he left the monastery because he didn't agree on how to teach people, so it wouldn't be too far out to assume he's thought about how omnics are supposed to relate with humans.

Meanwhile, Bastion is a living gun.

Sombra as a hacker would also be great to explore that.

>It's better to have more map detail then blood
I completely disagree. Unobtrusive particle blood splatters when you shoot someone are a simple yet extremely effective way to show a player that they're doing damage- if it bleeds, you can kill it. TF2 didn't ship with any hit indicator sounds or damage numbers, the only way to know you were hitting was seeing blood fly from the other guy and hear him grunt in pain until he eventually took enough damage to die and you got a little box in the upper-right showing you that you killed him. This is something that dates back to the days of Quake, where graphical overhead was pretty much nil and finding the simplest ways to convey something to the player was a necessity.

Blood splatters- assuming the player doesn't disable them in their graphics settings (remember those? Blizzard doesn't)- also allow for a form of indirect player versus player interaction. There's been more than once where I've rounded what I thought was an empty hallway or room only to find the walls and floor covered in blood, and immediately went on guard because the blood only lasts a short while before disappearing so there was a fight here very recently and I don't know if the victor was friendly or enemy, nor if they're still around. Often you can see one dropped weapon and some blood/impact marks and be able to work out exactly what happened there, and sometimes it's pretty funny which is always a nice thing.

OW has tons of map detail but it doesn't GO anywhere, one of the biggest complaints is how tiny and chokepoint-centered the maps are. TF2 is very good about not including tons of detail and instead relying on the _suggestion_ of detail and letting the player's mind fill in the rest. You don't need thirty individual power lines and sign posts and grates and what have you- plunk down some small stuff in gameplay-related spots and the player will get the gist of it just fine, and you don't need to fill the actual playable area with it.
