I prefer the series because it's cuter. pilot was ugly, and in a show where some designs are already ugly having an ugly art style makes it grating.

I don't know for certain, but I'd imagine that the simpler style of the show was probably chosen for being much easier to animate.
I like a lot of the details in Sugar's original art for the series, but it probably would have been a bitch to do well on a tv series' budget.

While I admit she has a nasty habit of drawing things way too sketchy and unfinished looking most of the time, when she manages to do cleaner art it looks pretty good.

I absolutely love this artstyle, but it would have been a bitch and a half to animate. And considering that the boarders struggle even with current simplistic one, it would have looked awful.

While I love Rebecca's hand drawn stuff, its looseness is more suited to story boarding, or animatics.

I feel like the show would look a lot more expiremental or some forgotten relic from MTV's early 90s animation projects.

Which, hell, would be great to look at, but it would have been impossible to get dozens of episodes out of the story the way it has with its current animation. ...And story and characters

I know the finalized form is better suited for animation.

The pilot designs for Steven and Pearl were bad. Especially Steven's. He looked like a small middle-aged man. I know the pilot as a whole may look cooler to people --because of 'wow detail!' probably-- but there was something ugly-looking about it. Maybe just the colors. The sudden shift in design from pilot to final product was jarring of course, but I think the final design works way better. Only problem being storyboarders' free reign of terror to go off model.

D'aw, now I'm remembering when the pilot first came out. Pre-everything.
