People tend to feature my country only to use its folklore, usually lazily (I don't think that's an exception - most folklore used in comics is used pretty lazily) or to make backwards hick jokes.

Are we still secretly the most evil country in Marvel or have the faggots fucked that up two, yt?
>>
>>88955911

Let's waste five min in a write up.

Uh. Depends. Can't think of my country (Italy) ever being relevant in capeshit or in other American comics, but I don't expect cultural sensivity out of Americans (after all, we're Euros so stereotypically all the same, not black people or women that can enjoy variety).

How's the comic situation in my country? Mostly horrendous. Comics were historically huge since the '30ies (the myth goes that Mussolini was a Disney fan) and unauthorized translation and knock-offs were made by the dozen. After WW2 the market got a boom thanks to the allure of American culture, and we got an endless parade of American derivaties (the oldest Italian comic still on-going, Tex Willer, is from 1948. It never got a reboot.). Since the sixties, French comic book culture started to influence the industry and thus you got this incredible array of "counter-culture" comics and underground art, popular American-influenced comics (ever heard of Diabolik?), translations of American comics strips (Peanuts, Wizard of Id). Starting from the seventies we got the boom of porn comics and the coming of several very good Italian authors, from Magnus to Jacovitti. The eighties were probably a golden era of expansion, with several high-value magazines translating British, American and French comics, publishing Italian ones co-existing with a kinda big "popular" industry that copied chunks of American pop culture wholesale, Disney Italy that was (and still is) a juggernaut and underground production (Zanardi, Ranxerox).

Great crash was in the first middle of '90ies. Manga and anime started eating hard on the profits, and a sudden increase of the price of paper sent a ton of publishers reeling. Few managed to reinvent themselves and the majority closed.
>>
>>88956698
Dial H was DC m8.
>>
>>88956720

Today we have Disney Italy (it throws out like 40% of the Euro output of Disney comics, and it's a household name for kiddie stuff here. Did some good experiments in the 90ies, like Duck Avenger) Bonelli, our local equivalent of DC\Marvel, producing tos of crap and the occasional good comic (Dampyr is a nice one with a Balkanite protagonist, and i guess Lilith from Enoch was translated in English sometimes) and a ton of smaller publishers who live and die and live again. It's a dying industry, though, no new blood or new ideas for at least twenty years and the profits have been steadily going down.

Even porn comics are in a terrible crisis! I guess, we get some good new authors, but they need to go to FRANCE to get stuff published. Dammit.
>>
>>88956800
It does seem like Italy used to be the porn comic hub of Europe.
>>
>>88956728
I'm talking about Weapon X. I know the movies that mention it have tried disconnecting it from the Canadian government because American normies are uncomfortable with the concept of countries other then America doing cool things but I remember the 90s and 00s Deadpool made no bones that Canada pretty much got all the good Nazi scientists and then let them go full mad science because why the hell not?

What are your top 5 Italian comics, all time, all genres?
>>
>>88956830

Eh. Us and Spain. The Internet killed that, sadly. Pity, ya know, it was some kind of academia for younger artists: they managed to get a portfolio, some crap published under a pen-name and some experience.

Today, it's all internet commissions or nothing.

Germany here. Well, I guess, in American comics, if at all, we're still depicted by the more interesting parts of our history :)

Comics created in Germany are mostly aimed at 6 to 10 year olds (such as Fix und Foxi), and America usually doesn't play a role there. There's a few indy labels doing mostly horror (and some tongue in cheek porn and superheroes), but nothing to write home about. At least we get a lot of translated comics from italy, france, spain, belgium and so on.
>>
>>88956939

Trick question, sadly, as I have shit taste and probably you won't get them in English. A good basics for "best" ita comics are:

1) Corto Maltese by Hugo Pratt. It's not typically Italian, but it's good. Dunnow what's in English, I swear your version of Ballad of the Salt Sea has been mangled by the publishers.

2) Italian Disney. For classical, find something done by Romano Scarpa, it has been translated into English. For newer stuff, PKNA or Duck Avenger or whatever you call them. Funny thing, Disney Italy is now under Panini Comics that was once Marvel Italy. What the fuck.

3) Sergio Toppi. You SHOULD find something of his in English, like Sharaz-De. He's a god-tier illustrator.

4) El Gaucho, by Milo Manara. It's not porn! I SWEAR! And Manara is not writing, so it's even good.

5) Vittorio Giardino. His Max Friedman series should be available in English.

If you want troll replies, Ganassa is a good NSFW Italian artist of the contemporary generation, and we even managed to throw out a somewhat acceptable superhero movie, "They called it Jeeg Robot".

1)Mafia and more mafia. Also grandmas.

2)Yeah, we're probably the only country that still makes good western-themed comics(Tex or Zagor, for example). We also have Dylan Dog and DragoNero, a pretty good fantasy comic which deserves more love.
We also managed to improve Mickey and Donald as characters, mainly with PK and Mickey's Mistery Magazine(who got ended early because the sales couldn't keep up with its Donald counterpart). The italian Mickey comics(Topolino) from the 50's had some pretty fucked up moments tho.

UK is usually presented as being stuck somewhere in the 19th century.

Seems to happen even when written by a Brit though, which is confusing. Noticed it when reading Sandman recently. Maybe it's because writers tends to be Southerners and I'm a geordie. Seeing a British street depicted without a Greggs every 3 or 4 shops down looks wrong.

Frog here, mostly ignored, some sightseeing, a bit of french french bashing and mime marceau stereotypes; nothing worth reporting.

I don't understand why they need to destroy the Eiffel Tower everytime someone visits Paris, though.

As for production, can't complain. Fantasy is our cape, but we got good series in almost any category that you can imagine, with some very experimental and imaginative stuff from time to time. The fact that belgian production flows freely here helps a lot, too.
In the early 2010s, publishers decided to stop flooding the market with barely profitable albums, and a lot of series were discontinued as a result. Quality hasn't improved.

Probably because it is a world landmark that can be destroyed without presumably hundreds or thousands of people dying like would likely be the case if a skyscraper or long span bridge was destroyed.

>Venezuela

The last judge dredd movie based their main location off our infamous tower of david, colloquially known as the rape tower.

Never seen us mentioned in anything, tho.

Which is strange because venezuela is basically the closest thing to an actual mega city 1, complete with homeless mutants in sewers, fascist police riding exclusively on motorbikes, actual honest to god supervillain popping up all over, and even fucking occult voodoo shit going down with the human trafficking rings. Plus caracas is a crazy city with mile long trees sprouting out from the middle of roads and stretches of garbage right next to old mountainous grottos full of ancient secrets, and architecture that ranges from colonial era stuff to neo brutality architecture.

We also have ghettos that are essentially giant stone mazes on mountainsides, and down south we have illegal diamond mining operations as well as mining for shit like mercury that poisons the workers.

Also we have jungle cannibals all over the place but they're actually very chill.

I dunno, I'm not proud of the state of my country but I admit that it's pretty much the perfect location for a comic book if anyone actually took the time to look into us more.

Also forgot to mention we have roaming mad max type criminals on motorbikes who regularly mug people coming out of supermarkets to steal their food. This one time when chavez died the chavists actually hijacked all the buses and decked them out like ork wartrukks and went crazy.

Also we have a lot of people who just casually are missing limbs, like you csnt go out without noticing how many people are just missing a leg or an arm or votj, I once saw a mechanic missing an arm and and leg and he was working with his mouth to make up for it.

Also videogames are unironically banned because chavez got mad at a counter strike mod so the underground piracy scene is alive and well, people still playing original counter strike and dbz mods, and we get technology generations late, the ps3 only just arrived as something new and we've just been making due with ps2s and old computers and lots or pirated stuff.. it'd like a time capsule to mid 2000s gaming.

On another note we had videogame devs here, the guys who made vallhalla, that cyberpunk bartending game. They're trapped in the country because the government wants to force them to reinvigorate venezuelan culture.

Also we have anime based off our first president.

It's weird.

I honestly can't tell you how accurate comic portrayals of Canada are, because the only places that get shown are in Ontario and I'm from BC. Like, everyone jokes about bagged milk but I've literally never seen it, it's strictly an Eastern Canada thing as far as I can tell.
Also, the thing that kind of annoys me is that they only ever show the nice parts of Ontario, or generic wilderness. Do you know what Northern Ontario looks like? It's 80 billion kilometers long and consists entirely of snow and rock.

Brazil here.

Usually it is Jungle and Rio, but there was some good comics that captivate some piece of Brazil like Wolverine: Black Rio (it was Carnival, but not mainstream Carnival, but the street Carnival), and Wolverine: Saudade (this one was done by french).

in the animated area, there is Irmão do Jorel (Jorel's Brother), there is a vibe like Flapjack and it is based on the childhood of the creator (lots of 80's and 90's brazilian shit), it is my favorite cartoon.

Oh I should also mention that if you're a university student you're in legitimate risk of being killed all the time, the government pretty much wants all the young people to be in the national guard because shit is getting out of control, so they regularly harass anyone still going to school with terrorist tactics. I'm dead serious, they even arrested an elderly college teacher once for supposedly being a suspected capitalist terrorist.

And about the national guard, here's the great tragedy of it all: it's pretty much just cubans. Cubans hijacked our military intelligence and slowly co opted our military to the point where there's a majority of people on power that are either native cubans or have cuban ties, the reason the guard shoots up so many of its own people is because a lot of them aren't even venezuelan.

It's fucking rich how cubans csn pretty much coast by on refugee status in the states and venezuelans just have to work like everyone else. I've heard of cuban expats still spouting commie shit while getting government checks whIle venezuelans who actually suffered a huge fucking brunt of socialism (which wasn't even socialism, it was straight up communism complete with people getting their businesses and homes expropriation for little to no reason, my grandpa had to quit his engineering job because the government took over the company he was working at and fucking harassed him out of his jon so they could put in incompetent party members into the workforce) pretty much get the short end of the stick.

The UK is normally depicted as a tourist's view of London, unless it's Scotland which always has a castle and some mountains in the background.

British comics started the same way as in most countries, as satirical cartoons and then strips in newspapers. Starting in the 30s comic books for children became very popular, The Beano is one that's still running. In the 50s adventure comics with higher quality art and paper took off, stuff like Valiant and Eagle. Commando was one exclusively devoted to war stories that's still going.

There was a similar underground comics movement to that in America, Oz is probably the best known of those. The creators got taken to court for obscenity and were actually convicted but luckily it got overturned. Local comics got pretty shat on 70s by Marvel who outsold all the adventure stuff.

A bit later in the 70s you get sci-fi and fantasy comics like 2000AD and Warrior, famously the origin of Judge Dredd and V for Vendetta respectively

The only home-grown success for adult comics after the underground stuff died was Viz, which is focused on satire and vulgar humour. Their best current strip is probably Drunken Bakers, a depressing slice of life about two alcoholics.

Canada generally isn't portrayed much in American comics. When it is, it tends either to be the Canadian wilderness (which admittedly we have a lot of) or it's little token mentions like hockey double double Trudeau poutine eh eh eh.

We do have some good comics coming out right now. Chapterhouse is putting out several titles including two Captain Canuck titles (one being a continuation of the 70s-80s series and the other a rebooted modern version), The Pitiful Human Lizard (think a less powerful Spider-man, with Toronto instead of New York), and others. They're also putting out fantasy titles like Spirit Leaves and Life, Death & Sorcery; stylized sci-fi like The Fourth Planet, and a sort of self-parodying series called Die Kitty Die where a comic publisher is trying to kill off their biggest star.

There are other small publishers in Canada, but they're all generally very small. Think NEC.

US comics is by their nature US-centric.
And the US has no clue as to how the rest of the world looks. Their media has told them that the entire world is shit, except their own country - so that no matter how bad things get, they can always say that it's not as bad as outside the borders.

US citizens who actually travel are often flabbergasted to find that other countries may be quite a lot more civilized than their own.

What the fuck I hate America now
>>
>Portugal
We are pretty much non-existent in the american comics.

The concept of producing comics is still a pretty new around here.

We have young writers like Filipe Melo, who did The Adventures of Dog Mendonça & Pizzaboy - an Evil Dead-esque horror comedy - and most recently The Vampires - a graphic novel about the portuguese colonial war.

We also have André Lima Araújo, who recently did some art for Marvel and he's now doing Man:Plus, a graphic novel inspired by cyberpunk anime, like Ghost in the Shell and Akira. He's far from bad, but I honestly think his art is just bland - everything he does feels way too generic to me, and it feels that he's trying way too hard to be a discount Katsuhiro Otomo.

man, yesterday on /tv/ they posted the cinemas after the screening and oh god, it was like they shitted out of their asses during the movie.

and you also eat pizza with your hands, what the fuck

You do know that the US is not the only "First World" country in the world, right? Also the three world model is obsolete. Most use the terms Developed, Developing, and Least Developed now.
>>
>>88965762
>US isn't the only First World country
It effectively is, compared to the other "first world nations"
>Besides it doesn't count anymore
And he's already backing down from the claim. What a surprise

What disgusting savage nation are you from?

#10 according to NUMBEO, but Canada is only #15 so at least you made the top 10.
>>
>>88962962
As someone from Northern Ontario, most of it is "generic wilderness".
>>
>>88962962
>Do you know what Northern Ontario looks like? It's 80 billion kilometers long and consists entirely of snow and rock.

Not strictly true. In the summer, it's full of rock and biting insects.
>>
>>88966215
Black fly clouds are genuinely terrifying. It's mostly trees. Just fucking trees everywhere.
>>
>>88955911

Canada is never accurate unless it's from a Canadian cartoon that doesn't revolve around gross out humour.

Feel sorry for non-American /co/mrades. US /co/ media can't even be bothered to portray most of America right let alone the rest of the world.
>>
>>88962962
I'm also from Victoria, BC. The only recent portrayal that springs to mind is the Vancouver 2010 Simpsons episode and they didn't even get the look of the city right.

I have a friend who grew up in NS and she says that bagged milk went away when her parents were teenagers. I have no idea why the meme exists at all. In the same vane, I think we can blame Bob and Doug Mackenzie for the accent stereotype, even though I've never even seen it.

Colombian here, our representation in media is quite expectable.
Narcos is not even remotely close to real history, the writers fucked up tons of shit.

And well, there is some Youtube cartoon out there called "Todos los Santos Díaz", it is good but episodes are very short, wasting some potential.
Other than that, we get our comics and cartoons from America, because they are our greatest ally :^)
>>
>>88959012
This probably is off topic, but what comic is that picture from?
>>
>>88968281
Ontario at least still has it. It's pretty satisfying to drink milk from the bag. Probably a tit substitute feeling.
>>
>>88955911
UK, but not from London but from the second biggest city, Birmingham. Which has only been represented in one MI13 Captain Britain comic.

Birmingham is a decent city, got a lot of shops and some nice ass canals and a German market. But other than that it just a city. We also happen to have the world's ugliest accent.
>>
>>88968281
In the city you probably have a less pronounced accent. But the smaller cities littered around the more rural parts sure do. It's just not done right when imitated by Americans.
https://youtu.be/ozDDYcyrCNE
This is a pretty accurate representation of buttfuck nowhere parts of Ontario.
>>
>>88971456
The best part about this show is that it portrays life in rural BC pretty well too. I'm willing to bet it's similar in the prairies too. Even the Maritimes probably have similar lives, barring accents.
>>
>Denmark

Beyond that one Ultimate FF story arc where Doctor Doom set up shop in Copenhagen, I honestly can't recall us ever being featured in US comics.
As for local comic industry, well, it's pretty much non-existent these days, having been replaced mostly by translated franco-belgian and german stuff.
>>
>>88971534
As a Maritimer I didn't understand some of the slang, but the rubber boots place them here pretty well.
>>
>>88972307

That's because as far as most of the US is concerned, scandinavia is only Sweden.
>>
All I can tell you is that on one episode of the 90s X-Men cartoon, they showed St. John's, Newfoundland, and it looked like some kind of little village full of irish people.

It's actually a city of 100 thousand people, and while they do talk funny, they ain't exactly irish.
>>
>>88971456
Yeah, the stereotypical Canadian accent tends to almost disappear among the more urban, the more educated, and the newer arrivals; in its place is a more homogenised "neutral" accent that comes from whatever Toronto- or America-based media most of these people consume.

can you post some articles of the examples of things you're describing?

>It's fucking rich how cubans csn pretty much coast by on refugee status

that's because the most capitalist cubans left after the revolution against batista, who was a u.s. puppet. cuba was being forced in to bad trade deals and employment was rigged in such a way that cubans could only work within the sugar season and be unemployed the rest of the year.

>still spouting commie shit while getting gov checks

see, that right there makes me think you're full of shit.

>wasn't even socialism, it was straight up communism

communism is a stateless society. if there's a government that's already a contradiction in terms. i get the sense that you don't know shit about communism

>my grandpa had a great job and shit happened
yeah, that happens here in the capitalist U.S. as well. sometimes people are forced to train the replacements who are foreigners

before you talk shit about communism, learn the history of the CIA and operation northwoods, and what the U.S. has done to keep its dominance... and that's what it is, dominance, not natural success.

Given how often they film in Vancouver and Toronto for "American" cities in Hollywood movies,we really don't look that radically different.

The biggest thing I notice when I go to America is their roads are worse (although I've only been to Michigan and New York states) and the food portions at restaurants are ridiculous.

The stereotype that Canadians are nicer than Americans is BS though. It's like anywhere you go. Some people are nice and will give you the shirt off their back, others are assholes who just have a stick up their ass. I'm always kind of worried when I go to America they think I'm elitist or arrogant or look down on them. I love our Ameribros though.

Perth is the second most isolated city (1m+ population) in the world, 2104km / ~1300 miles from the closest one.

Because of our isolation and the fact we're all cunts, the other cities of Australia tend to forget Perth exists. Not good enough or shitty enough to be remembered. Just Australia's asshole.

Argentina by Marvel.jpg

Back in the day, Argentina used to be one of two things: sorta exotic faraway locale for adventurers to lay low or track leads to, or just straight-up secret Nazi haven. Nowadays I haven't seen much mention of us in anything though, I guess the lustre must've fallen off.

As for the local comics scene, it's... OK. Used to be fucking HUGE, with dozens of excellent writers pumping out hundreds of scripts for a bunch of equally awesome artists to draw. Everything from slice-of-life comedy to full on psychological and metaphysical horror, with lots of sci-fi thrown in for good measure. Funny enough, there's also a long history of british collaboration when it comes to comics: Britbong was seen as the place famous artists went to for better-paying jobs, and Brits couldn't get enough of Argie artists, especially for war comics. Nowadays things have been in a steep decline for a while, but we still have a handful of local anthologies merrily trucking along, and reprints of the old stuff are steadily showing up.
