Thoughts on Batgirl from Adam West's Batman?
She's often ignored on the Batman 66 circlejerks, probably because she killed the show, or at least she was the symbol of the mentality that killed the show. I don't know, it's just weird to have a third member. For me it's just S1 and S2

>Thoughts on Batgirl from Adam West's Batman?

Yvonne Craig was mad sexy, and that alone justified her inclusion in the series.
>>
>>88946372
The perv demographic wasn't big enough to sustain the show, or perhaps they wanted something more explicit like Deep Throat

We should count our blessings that things worked out more or less for the best - although she was initially created because the show needed a new love interest for Batman because Catwoman was now "colored", she wound up becoming one of the best members of the Bat-family, and aside from Bruce Timm everyone has thankfully forgotten that aspect of her existing.
Also,
>>88946527
this.
>>
>>88945993
I think she was a fine enough addition, but she did represent a sort of clutteredness that held up some of the later episodes. Too much continuity and recurring roles when the rest of the show was so detached from reality or complexity.

Yeah, it is ridiculous how attached the higher ups at DC got to a fapbait character.
>>
>>88946591
but she was in the comics first
>>
>>88946881
The higher ups at DC didn't care about Batgirl for the longest time. In the comics she was often bland and directionless. The show overall was much more competently put together and more fun than the comics of the time.

I was referring to how Cassandra Cain (and later Stephanie Brown) got axed because "not muh Batgirl," but yeah, Babs has a shit presence in comics as Batgirl except for Year One.
>>
>>88946897
She was created by Carmine Infantino because the producers requested her.
>>Schwartz stated that he had been asked to develop a new female character in order to attract a female viewership to the Batman television series of the 1960s.[6] Executive producer William Dozier suggested that the new character would be the daughter of Gotham City's Police Commissioner James Gordon, and that she would adopt the identity of Batgirl.[7] When Dozier and producer Howie Horowitz saw rough concept artwork of the new Batgirl by artist Carmine Infantino during a visit to DC offices, they optioned the character in a bid to help sell a third season to the ABC television network. Infantino reflected on the creation of Batgirl, stating "Bob Kane had had a Bat-Girl for about three stories in the ’50s but she had nothing to do with a bat. She was like a pesky girl version of Robin. I knew we could do a lot better, so Julie and I came up with the real Batgirl, who was so popular she almost got her own TV show."[8]
If the comic came out first, it's only because that's a faster art form than TV.
>>
>>88947014
Stephanie Brown's Batgirl was just Barbara Gordon's Batgirl but incompetent. I remember /co/ hated her run until it got cancelled, at which point suddenly everybody had loved it and DC just wanted to punish them for not liking Barbara.
>>
>>88946897
You're thinking of Bat-girl, with a hypen, who was Bette Kane.

According to wiki, Babs appeared simultaneously in the comics and show, and was created at the request of the show people.
>>
Batgirl did not kill the show. The ratings were already stagnant. What killed the show was that it was way too expensive to build a set and then destroy it every single episode.

She did kind of gum up the works, not her fault per se but the show had to find a new rhythm. I think if they had a 4th season they might have found it.

I met Craig several years ago, she was very cool.

Supposedly Poison Ivy was created as a potential villain for the show to use, also, but they ultimately passed. Imagine Ann-Margaret guest starring as Poison Ivy?
>>
>>88945993
Her role in the show was bizarrely inconsistent.
Some episodes the writers clearly wanted a girl power message (or whatever the 60's equivalent was) whereas other episodes clearly present her as being an incompetent damsel who should stay out of peoples way. Neither of these dynamics work particularly well with the main duo.
Also her theme song is one of the worst pieces of music ever made.
>>
>>88945993
She and Batman had a sexual tension in Batman 66. Or maybe that's just me. I really love her as Batgirl. RIP.
>>
>>88955012
Batman couldn't have sexual tension with Catwoman anymore because she got blacked and there were still rumors about Robin so the tension moved to Batgirl

>>
>>88957159
>Killer Croc is a fictional supervillain appearing in American comic books published by DC Comics, commonly as an adversary of the superhero Batman. The character was created by writer Gerry Conway and by artist Gene Colan. The character's first appearance was a shadowy cameo in Detective Comics #523 (February 1983) and Batman #357 (March 1983) then his full appearance in Batman #358 (April 1983).

Barbara was treated as a love interest for Batman/Bruce in the 66 show from the start. Her first appearance literally has Commissioner Gordon trying to set her up on a date with Bruce Wayne, but they both cancel it to go do bat stuff. At the end of the episode they do meet and realize they like each other so they reschedule the date.

Despite the fact that Burt Ward was clearly too old, the show always treated Robin as a prepubescent boy who thought girls were icky.

>>
>>88952502
Huh! I always felt it was odd that Poison Ivy didn't appear on the show despite feeling like she was made for it. It's interesting to note that season 3 introduces Louie the Lilac, a gangster with a flower motif and a giant man-eating mutant plant. I wonder if they got into preproduction for a Poison Ivy episode, then Milton Berle asked for a role so they wrote it around him instead.

>Why does Robin only need a shitty little eye mask and she needs to cover half her face plus a wig?
Because that's how their costumes were designed - blame Jerry Robinson and Carmine Infantino
>And why is it ok for robin to run around in boy panties but she can't show any skin?
The 60's may have been free and swinging, but TV censors only had so much leniency for a show aimed at families - it was still (mostly) okay for a man in his twenties to get into fights in a circus-style get-up, but Fox knew the fallout from a similar outfit for Batgirl wouldn't be worth the thousands of angry letters (this is back when people gave a shit about angry letters).
