I'm just getting into Hellboy. I'm curious though, has Mike Mignola done other projects? I really love his work. I'm interested to know more about him.
>>
>>88859188
Two Batman Elseworlds (alt universe tales)

Some Conan stuff
>>
he writes baltimore
>>
He's a devout Catholic (that's why Hellboy is), he's married, has a daughter if I recall, friends with Steve Purcell and Art, worked on Atlantis, and he did The Amazing Screw On-Head. That was a one shot.
>>
>>88859219
I totally spaced on the Batman crossover. It also had...oh, fuck me running, I can't remember. Someone else was there. Called Hell Comes To Gotham? I think?
>>
Who's Steve Purcell?
>>
>>88859300
I am trying to be nice but, come on. Sam and Max. A hilarious bastard who's Mignola's closest buddy?
>>
This makes me want to dump Seed of Destruction. Except the computer with that is in the shop. Piece of junk.
>>
>>88859270
The Doom That Came To Gotham and Gotham by Gaslight.
>>
What's the current status of Hellboy? Is it still dragging on slowly? haven't checked in years
>>
>>88859353
Of course, I'm sorry. It's been ages.
>>
>>88859370
There's Hellboy In Hell, and BPRD, those are still going.
>>
>>88859188
He worked as an inker in Marvel and DC before starting Hellboy (if I recall correctly,he designed both Rocket Racoon and Mr. Freeze's characteristic chriogenic armour); he's also illustrated some books (the original Baltimore novel, a recent edition of The Heart of Darkness and also at least another book, but can't remember the name).

He drew Fafhrd and the grey mouser, and a comic written by him titled Ironwolf.

Also Mignola art dump, because why not.
>>
>>88859420
You're a godsend.
>>
>>88859411
hellboy in hell ended
hell on earth also ended
>>
>>88859370

Hellboy died.
went to hell.
starred in a book called HELLBOY IN HELL.
thats done now, so Hellboy is done.

they're occasionally doing Hellboy and the BPRD which are set back when HB was a part of the team.
>>
>>88859420
>Mr. Freeze's characteristic chriogenic armour

I think he just did the design for the cartoon, which everyone in the comics then copied.
>>
>>88859370
Hellboy in Hell wrapped up his story, but theyre still putting out stories set in the past and Mignola has avoided saying In Hell is the final Hellboy story.

Currently Mignola's taking a break from comics to paint.

>>88859188
He also did the art for Aliens:Salvation
>>
>>88859453
I'm just a neckbeard, but thanks for the compliment anon.

Just to be more specific; Mignola got to design Mr. Freeze's armour because he briefly worked as a character designer in the Batman animated series in the 90s. His design stuck and afterwards became the canon for the character's appereance.
>>
>>88859463
Ah, they did? Suck. I haven't been to pick up comics in months cause of family stuff. I've been way out of the loop.
>>
>>88859188
>I'm just getting into Hellboy
Congratulations, you have made the correct decision.
>other projects
Doctor Strange & Doctor Doom - Triumph & Torment had Mignola doing the art. It's great.
>>
>>88859515
I actually just found a hardcover copy of that at a half price books, I wish Dave Stewart also did the colors instead of just the cover.
>>
Is it okay if I start with Seed Of Destruction? Or should I go elsewhere? I'm really liking it.

The things that are still going are
Lobster Johnson
Witchfinder
Hellboy and the B.P.R.D.
a mediocre mini about the black flame
and upcoming
A GN called hellboy and the silent sea
A mini about the alien from conqueror worm called the visitor with art by based paul grist
and a new B.P.R.D. cycle

Yes. Yes it is.

>>
>>88859606
you should 100% start there but it's one of the weaker parts of the universe
>>
>>88859616
>and a new B.P.R.D. cycle
Oh my!
>>
>>88859592
Mignola's said his style of heavy shadows came from colourists messing up his work when he was starting out, as more black gave them less room to fuck up.
>>
>>88859606
Definitely start there, but keep in mind it's a bit wordy. Mike didn't write it. His stuff is more visual. So when you move from there expect a bit of a change.

>>
>>88859989
I always wondered cause his comics interpretation seemed so liberal. Like, if you're going to say "that's the way it happened" with the bible but then go and draw something else for fun, how do you fit that in your head? It seems kind of contradictory.
>>
>>88860180
How do you write things that never happened and make it fit with the fact that they never did happen? It's just fiction.
>>
I THINK he did the art for Darkest Dungeon?
>>
>>88860180
It's not so odd, in a theological sense. Technically Catholicsm doesn't say other gods don't exist. They're just spirits and not worth worship. Comes from the Ten Commandments. "You will have no gods before me." As in, they can all go fuck themselves, but Yahweh is the big boss. I studied theology in university.
>>
I once dreamed Hellboy and Abe fought Darth Vader. Best dream ever.
>>
>>88860231
Its definitley heavily inspired by him, but its done by a guy called Chris Bourassa.
>>
>>88860300
How did they counter the Force?
>>
>>88860309

Abe got his ass kicked. Hellboy is technically divine and just beat the shit out of him. The hand of doom smacks your melon, you go down and be thankful your cranium isn't pudding.
>>
>>88860364
I would like to see that fight one day.

Sorry, I just associate "hardcore catholic" with "blind faith and fanaticism", so I have trouble wrapping my head around someone believing, like, really believing, but then fucking around with the same thing.
>>88860464
I guess that makes sense. It just seems so odd to me, hardcore catholic having a sense of humor about his own beliefs. It's like, believing and non-believing at the same time. Maybe it's just my own preconceived notions about hardcore believers being humorless cunts, but I still can't believe it's an often-found combination.

>>
>>88864301
Consider what God he talks about. The big man can probably take a joke. Creator of all things, that includes humour. I don't think He would be too upset. Catholics have a saint for clowns and comics. Genesius. He's also saint of the tortured and, for some nebulous reason, stenograpers.

Not him but it's not the strangest thing. Tolkien struggled for years over the idea of orcs because as a devout Catholic that believes in the idea of spiritual redemption, the concept of an all-evil irredeemable race runs counter to that.

As someone from a very Catholic family, you are really off in your assumptions. Hellboy works within the faith for two reasons. The first is that it is agreed that an unexamined faith is absolute trash. If you don't question your own morals and beliefs you are a blind fool. So suggesting an alternative to God is actually just goodmental exercise. The second is that Hellboy is a fantastic example of Christian redemption. In Christianity every single person is born a sinful and flawed creature who is inherently evil. A Christian is someone who recognises their flaws and strives to be something better than what they are. Just like Hellboy who is a monster from Hell ordained to bring about the destruction of the world, but he does everything in his power to save it.

>>88865152
They're not really a great basis. Mignola is Catholic. That means everyone is a sinner. We are all faulty in the eyes of God. However, if we do our best, we are saved. >>88866737
Said it better. Hellboy is an overblown example of what our beliefs are. He's literally a demon, and he just wants to protect people. That is the base essence of being Christian. You're evil but do everything to not be.

I did some some googling and I've found some catholitic oriented sites stating that Hellboy is catholitic comic/hero but I haven't come across any sources from an interview where Mignola states he's a catholic.

Though it's not technically part of the Mignolaverse you should also add The Amazing Screw on Head. There's a short story included there, The Magician and the Snake, that will really help you understand the ending of Hellboy in Hell. Or at the very least make more sense of it.

Not him but I would if that's what it was about, so far it's been a very bland series that's killed the few interesting characters it introduced and works more as a hook for the next BPRD cycle (because you just know we haven't seen the last of the Flame) and maybe a Sarah Jewell spinoff.

Eh, different strokes I guess. It really didn't do much for me. I was impressed by the knowledge of southern US folklore, given that's what it's based on. It's Cajun. My grandmama used to tell a story about a man who was warped, and was a demon. I like the story, but I think the art was a bit weak. That's me though. If you like it, God bless.

The characters are well written and fleshed out and again consistent, having a single writer the entire run might have a lot to do with this.

I'm always kinda left with that feeling in regards to Hellboy. Being the protag of the story doesn't mean you get to live, being the bad guy doesn't mean you have to die, important actions don't necessarily have a big buildup...It's kinda true to life in that regard, stuff just...happens. (bit reminded of George R.R. Martin too)

I don't think they're perfect endings, but they have their moments. I think people were expecting more definitive endings but if you view at just another endnote for a particular arc, they're pretty good. I really like Johann's sacrifice in Hell On Earth since it feels like a logical end to his arc about struggling with his own morality. I also really like the symbolism in Hellboy in Hell's ending even if it may have been a bit abrupt.
>>
>>88882629
> a logical end to his arc about struggling with his own morality

Morality or mortality? Because I thought it was the perfect ending due to how he's struggled with his mortality. Sort off. Like, he's been clinging on to whatever bit of life he had left for quite some time now, getting a new body and everything. Then in the end he chose to completely annihilate himself and even give up any chance of an afterlife, good or bad, just to give humanity a few more seconds. Meanwhile Iosif has not been clinging to life but he ended up annihilated as well in the end.
>>
>>88882730
Both. Throughout Hell on Earth, Johann's been struggling with what he sees as his increasing coldness/detachment towards people due to his ghostly state and in the end he sacrifices his very existence and being one with the universe just so he can give humanity more time. He knows that on a cosmic scale his sacrifice is pointless but he is willing to do it no matter how little it helps.

Found something:

>No, I don’t believe in anything, really. Not on a conscious level. That is the beauty of it. I was raised Catholic. I was taught a bunch of stuff. I find religion fascinating, but at no time does any of that tie my hands. I get to play with stuff without getting to reverential.

I think some posters/people think if he was raised Catholic therefore he still is a Catholic as an adult. This thread is pretty dead but the next time someone says Mignola is a catholic, now there's a source on the matter.
>>
>>88860300
Actually that makes me who'd win in a fight. Hellboy is literally divine. Anakin has the Force. In a straight brawl I'd give it to Hellboy. Vader's body is so destroyed, he couldn't possibly stand against the sheer power Hellboy can throw down.

Does anybody else get overwhelmed with the amount of material the magnolia-verse has? I'm very on-again off-again with the series, as it's hard to keep track of everything (the release schedule being inconsistent doesn't help). I finished hellbound goes to hell, and I think the last BPRD issue I read was 141.

Also, what do people think about the animated movies? I've seen the first, but haven't gotten around to the second one.

It was overwhelming when I first started getting into it.
Now I'm sad there isn't enough. Never enough.
>animated movies
They're okay-ish, but not really on the level of the comics. Didn't one of them just take plot elements from Wake the Devil and stuff it into a story about a haunted house?
>>
>>88904102
Funny, it was at about the twenty year mark that things started to get overwhelming for me.

That might be the second one. The first one is pretty much "Hellboy in Japan".

>>

Catholics actually pretty rarely act like that, probably helps with how old and thus how well established our doctrine is, heck we actually have some basic doctrine set up for when we make contact with Alien life

most Christian fanaticism in the US involves much younger and unstable sects, who take the Bible much more literally than Catholicism does(for example standard Catholic doctrine is that Revelations is merely allegory, not something destined to happen, we don't believe in either the Rapture or in a literal Apocalypse happening any time soon)

Saints give protection. We believe they're close to God. So when you offer them prayers they can transmit them to the Lord, and being closer than sinners, they have more influence. Technically a saint is anyone in Heaven. Saint just means 'holy'.
