Jim Lee saved the franchise.

the only reason people even remember this era is cause of the cartoon anyway

late 80's to mid 90s was best time for x-men, which coincidentaly was when i was a kid and read them
>>
>>88849735
To be fair
Sentinels and evil Magneto are when the comic was at its best.

Making Claremont leave is pretty fucking dick, though.
>>
>>88849907
x-men was already the most popular franchise of the 80s
>>
>>88853079
When do you think X-Men was at its best? Before All New, All Different? Because both Magneto and the Sentinels were used very sparingly in the Claremont/Byrne/Austin run, which is usually regarded as the X-Men's best.
>>
>>88853226

And then it got even more popular.
>>
>>88849735
Fuck him.
>>
I always wondered, was there any hostility between Lee and Claremont? Or did Claremont focus that on editorial?
>>
>>88854461
they worked together a few years later on WildCATS, Huntsman a character Claremont created was making the rounds through the Image Universe and there was ads for a book in Wizard but it never came out.

I've never heard any stories about CC being upset, just him being mature about editorial going with the hot hand.

But Sentinels are barely in the Claremont run after UXM #100.
And Redeemed Mags >>>>>>>> Villain Mags.
Anyone who says otherwise doesn't read X-Men funnybooks.

UXM had changed beyond recognition y that point anyway. I've been meaning reread the Jim Lee stuff.
My favorite period is Giant Size to about 175.

Claremont was angry, but mostly at harass.
However, contrary to Byrne, he was smart enough to not make drama out of it, and be mostly silent.

In gratitude, he worked with some Image books, and later, he returned to marvel as editor, thanks to Harras, the very same person, that made Claremont leave in the first place

Sinister is more of a Cyclops nemesis

Apocalypse shit always disappointed except that one we all know

Magneto has only two choices since he can't win, join or die. So redeemed Magneto is a thing now and then, specially since he's rarely true evil

Sentinel / racism is boring now, last time it was interesting was on ultimate X-Men since it was a whole new 'modern universe'

Cosmic X-Men is just... I need to read more to share a opinion on this. I'm kinda new to comics, lots of classics to read and X-Men are among my favorites

>>
>>88858871
Because, you mongoloid, if those hadn't been used some other designs would've been THE designs. And then this thread would've been about them, but we'd still be calling you a retard.
>>
>>88859552
if his designs were no good they would have changed them. Yet they became iconic. The comics were super popular even before the show, in part thanks to Lee's art and designs. The cartoon might have boosted the popularity of the designs through TV, but to say they were popular just because of that is dumb and ignorant.
>>
>>88858068
Jim Lee was known to practically anyone with a passing interest in comics during the 90s, and even those who didn't. His name alongside Todd McFarland and Liefeld sold just about any book and held a lot of clout based on name alone.
>>
>>88858871
I think you fail to grasp that the cartoon existed because the X-Men were already incredibly popular at the time. X-Men cartoons had failed to take off multiple times prior to that. The comics immense popularity is why it got greenlit in the first place.

Because Avengers are like, the worst superhero team ever. The Hulk is one-note, Spider-Man got OMDed, FF is archaic and the rest are literal whos
>>
>>88860452
The intro was amazing.

Imagine what could have been. You would probably have two nostalgia fans.

One would prefer the 80s version, which was a typical cartoon for its time, the other generation would be nostalgic over 90s cartoon, and let's not forget about 00s evolution fans

Not to mention, they're the designs used in XMvSF->MvSF->MVC->MVC2 making them even more iconic/cementing their status as THE costumes.

>>
>>88862185
It hasn't aged well, but it gets a pass for being the beginning of the franchise.
