Oh look, drama aborted in the second panel.

Have no fears, Willy's got stories for years, like
Carla becomes a robot,
Maybe Danny gets a dick pic, has Joyce ever owned a bear?
>>
>>88717402
Okay, that's DEFINITELY an example of the kind of anti-climactic cliffhanger that Willis was criticizing Funky Winkerbean for doing.

>My Lesbian
Oh, fuck off.

>Landlords letting drunk people into others' houses "just because"
Yeah, I don't think that's a thing.

>a D of some nontrivial size
Well, better get your dick jokes out, because that's going to be all you're gonna hear in the DoA comment section tomorrow.

Also, if Robin was on top of the sheets, how did Leslie have enough slack to pull them aside and pull them back over herself when climbing back into bed?
>>
>>88717402
>drama aborted in the second panel.
It was misleading, but that's because Willis sucks at pacing. If panels 1 and 2 were at the end of last strip, the message would be "Leslie doesn't know what she wants" or "Leslie doesn't know what she should do," which are both decent. As it is now, it's "WHAT'S THIS? IS LESLIE GOING TO BLACKMAIjust kidding."
>>
>>88717402
>Oh look, drama aborted in the second panel.
Pretty pointless, sis.

Also I wonder how much of this was for the Trump "Look at my African-American" reference linking up with how Robin calls Leslie "My lesbian" all the time.

>>88717501
>Okay, that's DEFINITELY an example of the kind of anti-climactic cliffhanger that Willis was criticizing Funky Winkerbean for doing.
Pretty much, yeah.
>>
>>88717229
So, right now I'm combing through his archive and saving all his old strips so I can read them at my leisure and for archival purposes.

If I get pretty far in would anyone be interested in a storytime?
>>
>>88717528
>Also I wonder how much of this was for the Trump "Look at my African-American" reference linking up with how Robin calls Leslie "My lesbian" all the time.

Nah it's a call back to the nickname Robin had for Leslie back in SP!

remember, if it looks like Willis ever made anything new, he didn't.
>>
>>88717612
I'd keep making an archive first and foremost.

Save the storytime for another day, like when we're all drunk.

>'cuzza the *thing*
I wonder if she means Leslie stealing her glasses. If so, this kinda puts this on Leslie if Robin stumbled after her to try and get her stuff back. Something bad could've happened to her.

Still kinda weird that her landlord let her into the actual home, I wonder if they're a DeSanto voter.
>>
>>88717402
>>88717523
>>88717501
Willis writes for the trade, panels one and two will pace a lot better when the strips are on a single page. That's the root of a lot of Willis' pacing issues; he can't balance that strip-a-day format with the eventual collection.

>>88717832
Obviously it's because Leslie frequently brings home drunken bar sluts to bang and the landlord lives vicariously through Leslie's promiscuity.
>>
>>88717402

What the hell, the red panels are things she wants to lock away and not think about--the robbery, awkward shit with Ethan, and enjoying violence.

>>88719385
Yea, but if it was about the stab the panel would've been the stab. The three red panels in this strip are all times Amber felt powerless: against a robber, against the fact of Ethan's homosexuality and against her own rage. Granted, Willis has been shifting toward red for just the last one more and more.

you could be right, but considering she said "repurposed" it seemed to me to be specifically about her rage and violence. like, shes not channeling her helplessness into amazi-girl.
>>
>>88719606
>shes not channeling her helplessness into amazi-girl.
I would say not directly, but a little bit in the sense of "Amazi-girl is strong and capable unlike Amber who is weak and violent. Amber gets angry at stupid things but Amazi-girl enforces justice and all her anger is righteous and pure!" So not putting on the mask to channel helplessness, but to be like "the other person is helpless not me haha".

yeah, the whole reason shinji has a better sync ratio is because he's more of a pushover and willing to just let his mother do everything. Asuka is too competitive to surpass him until EoE when she realizes just who Eva 02 is.

and Asuka never liked Shinji. She was briefly attracted to the 'ace pilot' persona he had begun to put forward during the action arc but she quickly lost interest when it became obvious Shini was too much of a coward to make a move.

and after she got raped she realized the only reason Shinji even gave a shit about how she was feeling was because he found her easier to emotionally leach off when she was full self-confidence

That's what I meant by all the time, it's the first time in this series.

What I mean is that instead of it being a weird endearing thing like in Shortpacked (which is pretty fucked up in retrospect, but it wasn't a serious series), it's now Robin referring to one of "her minorities" like Trump refers to his.

Basically, I bet Willis was excited that Trump said that line so he could fit the call back in with his analogue.

>>

>That's the root of a lot of Willis' pacing issues; he can't balance that strip-a-day format with the eventual collection.

The pacing of this scene will be worse in print. There's no time to build tension here. Leslie takes the picture and then instantly deletes it. What's the point? We get it, she's a noble soul who won't give into her impulsive desires, whatever they may be. We've been through this internal conflict with her at least twice already, it's only gotten more banal as the story has progressed.

Willis needed to have her hold onto the picture to build tension. It's obvious he's writing for the 24 hour update cycle and not trade.

Did he even watch Evangelion? Shinji is repeatedly shown to be inept when it comes to actual combat, relying on either Misato's guidance, help from the other Evas, or his own Eva going berserk. This actually pisses me off way more than it should. Not the picture, I didn't even bother looking at it, but the caption describing it. "Walky weenus"

WEENUS.

First, this word already means something. It describes the loose skin on your elbow.

"But anon, you fucking nitpicker," you say. "What if Willis doesn't know that? It's not a word in common usage and he has a history of using retarded baby-talk in the most inappropriate descriptions, such as 'barfy and ass-barfy'?"

That's all true. However, Willis tried to be funny like this before. It was one of his more infamous Shortpacked strips - the one where the strawman complains about MLP ads in Transformers comic, and the punchline is that he's transphobic. The final panel has a newspaper that reads 'Dingus cuts off own weenus'. Several people with an actual knowledge of anatomy posted in the comments, legitimately confused as to why the character was flaying his own elbows, as it made no sense. Willis even addressed some of the commentators directly.

That's what grinds my gears. It's not the ignorance. It's the dedication to it.

>>
>>88750551
This is a list of characters I like regardless of there view points:
>Sarah
She's standoffish and an asshole, but she knows that's fucking up her chances at meaningful relationships. I'd love for her arc to be more that (I can't been nice Cuz it's not me).
>Joyce
A homegrown Christian girl whose having her values and faith questioned in a new world full of diverse viewpoints
>Joe
Joe is normal and that's all I need. He's a breath of fresh air in this sjw propaganda webcomic
>Dorthy
She's interesting when she's not tangled in bullshit. She's trying to have a successful career and it's at odds with her social life
>Mary
Foil to Joyce but doesn't take bullshit. She's very manipulative and stands with her faith 100%. However she will compromise if it's something she wants or believes is right.

That's pretty much it. Everyone else is whiny, annoying, defined by their sexuality, an asshole, or pointless. Worst character in the whole this is a Tie between Becky and Amber. Becky hasn't had any character development except early on when she was defined as a Lesbian. I think she's saying she a lesbian because it gives her attention in a sjw lgbt focused world. I wish the story with her and Joyce had real pay off, but it wont. Amber is a psychologically disturbed girl. She turns her rage and insecurities into a Superhero personality that she herself believes is a different person and separate from her. This has cause her closest relationships to fail and she lashes out in very violent ways. As much as she sees herself as her mother, she is her father.

Well if we're going down that road I guess my list of chracters I like would be.
>Joyce
She's cute and a bit curvy and despite all the shit that happens to her she manages to stay likeable (although her baby talk gets annoying)
>Marcy & Malaya
Both purely for boner reasons. Also I kinda like skater girls. Marcy's a radical shortstack and malaya is a petite brown asian with a bad attitude. As bad as Willy is at porn I'd have to read it out of principal.
>Sierra
Cute, nice, brown, doesn't start trouble and isn't a shitty person. Definitely my type.
>Mike
Simply because he hasn't appeared enough to be ruined.
Most other Willis characters slowly got worse or got ruined recently
>Walky
Used to find his childishness charming and fun but Willis clearly doesn't know what to do with him and every storyline with him is an eyeroll. Also fuck Willis and his dumb racism subplot. He clearly doesn't understand how much SHIT half black people get.
>Billie
Chubby, Bespectacled, Flexible, and the biggest chest of the main cast, a little bitchy but not overly so. But the whole storyline with Ruth is actually the worst thing ever and now I hate everything out of her fat mouth.
>Carla
Had Carla just remained an asshole for fun and not a fucking martyr, I would've at least thought she was fine. What can I say, I like characters that know they're assholes and don't really care.
>Robin and Leslie:
Used to like 'em in shortpacked. It makes almost no reason for them to get together now but whatever. Maaaaybe it'll be cute?

Basically half of the characters are enjoyable because they're fappable and the other half were actually kinda fun, but Willis' poor writing skills fucking makes you dislike goddamn everyone and even likeable people become complete asshats when the narative calls for it.
>>
>>88751421
>I think she's saying she a lesbian because it gives her attention in a sjw lgbt focused world

When I first read the Becky arc I honestly thought it was going to turn out that Becky wasn't actually a lesbian but was trying so hard to get away from anything resembling her home life that she went to the opposite extreme and convinced herself she was a lesbian.
>>
>>88752076
That would be an interesting direction to take.
It gets to a point that she cries after having sex with Dina because she faked every minute of it.

Honestly, Becky is almost being written like a college lesbian, right down to reminding everybody that she's a lesbian.
>>
>>88752076
I actually think that's still a possibility.

>>88752144
Willis said it would be 2058 or so before Dina will be ready to have sex.
>>
>>88752076
>>88752144
>>88752173
I don't know, "fake lesbian" seems far more like a Billie plot. I think it'd be better served for Becky to have repressed it for so long that when she finally starts expressing her sexuality she's dismayed at the normality of it and is deeply disappointed and almost resentful that it's not some huge, cathartic, life-affirming moment.
>>
>>88752173
Honestly, Dina suddenly reaching an epiphany about sex is more likely than what Leslie's been doing. It's just that it takes a bit of nuance about sexual attraction and enjoyment and such to write something like that, and Willis's grasp on the mental aspects of sex is...limited.

Now that I think about it, his whole 'Ruth=Sub, Billie=Dom' thing in their slipshine should be an insult to anyone who didn't learn about BDSM from Rihanna or 50 Shades of Grey.
>>
>>88752338
>>88752173

It's funny how one of Dina's main sticking points in her interactions with her peers is her dislike of being infantilized, but Willis himself is committed to infantilizing her and his fans are okay with that.

It's one thing to say that the character wouldn't want to immediately start having sex, but at some point you're going to need a concrete reason as to why they're not wanting to have sex in a committed relationship. I wouldn't put it past Willis to suddenly reveal Dina as asexual and ignore the relationship issues that would logically spring from that situation though.
>>
Speaking of Slipshine, it's been four days and nobody's posted it. We've been slacking.

>>88752699

>>
>>88752699
Willis is hilariously ironic about that sometimes

Ethan: "I'm dating this clueless Christian girl because I don't want being gay to be the only important thing in my life"
Willis: -proceeds to make every Ethan subplot center around his sexuality for 6 years straight-
>>
>>88752783
If Dina was asexual you could contrast her and Carla based on how they express it. Dina is fine with relationships, romance, and kissing (and might even be the type to engage in sexual activity without reciprocation by her partner) whereas Carla seems highly disinterested in any of that.
>>
>>88752853
There's a list of Holy Grails on the TFWiki.
Think Willis would give up his convictions if promised one of those Grails?

>>88752857
I wonder if it's less about personality and development to Willis and more about who's hooking up with whom.

Like, it really is starting to feel like stories that don't directly involve characters making kissy faces at or with each other are pushed by the wayside. Note how swiftly Becky's job hunt was concluded, compared to how long the plot of her trying to get Dina to take off her hat was focused upon.
>>
>>88752853
Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't that version of Dina in her late 20s/early 30s?

>>88752857
Your first example makes your point on its own. Ethan has never had a plot that doesn't revolve around his sexuality.
>>
>>88752932

>Think Willis would give up his convictions if promised one of those Grails?

Are you implying he doesn't own all of them? If there's a Holy Grail on TFWiki it's probably because he found it and made the page about it.

But yeah, I doubt he has the integrity not to go back on what he says or revise his word. If he didn't go back on "no rehashing relationships" because Slipshine wanted another porno between Leslie and Robin, I'd be surprised.
>>
>>88752932
From a narrative perspective job hunting is very passive. He could have made it more active by Becky attending a job fair or something, but ultimately unless you wanted the entire strip to be about Becky and her personal life and feelings there is only so much you can do with a job hunting plot.

He could have given her more of a challenge than filling out job applications. Maybe have her in an interview? Like you say, a job fair could be an answer as well.

Like, her Galasso's job was literally dropped in her lap. That's not how ANYTHING works in real life, no matter how lax the business is.

If that means 'digging far enough into Becky's psyche that we find something besides 'I'm A Lebsian' printed a thousand times', then I'd buy it.

Or 'Becky goes through a bunch of interviews, fucks up most of them because of her Beckyness, and finally manages to channel her Beckyness into seeming like an enthusiastic employee rather than an annoyance and gets hired'

Or 'Becky gets accepted to two jobs, but one pays poorly and the other one has a low-key homophobe as her boss/manager, and she has to decide whether being honest about herself and her relationship is worth being little more than broke'

Yeah, there you go. You forgot about how the laws of physics bent over backwards to help Becky, as well as her own body protecting her from any physical injuries resulting from a rollover that threw her father out of his car.
Also, there was the whole thing about breaking into her house.
Everything in Becky's life has been thrown in her lap as if Willis wants to be remembered for giving the first person to give a lesbian a happy ending.

Because, you know, the 1985 film "Desert Hearts" doesn't exist.
>>
>>88752262
Also, in a college campus where 2/3 of the students are some flavor of LBGT, being a lesbian is honestly not too dramatic a thing. Like how she was trying to freak the mundanes at Chik Fil A and the staff was like "We don't care?"

Ethan's got a new project in his class (I have no clue what Ethan is taking), and has to work with a new character. They don't get along, and he goes to Jacob for advice after they work a bit in Ethan's room and he witnesses the person's attitude in person.

Ethan makes it his mission to impress this person and make them his friend, and decides to recruit Jacob and Raidah to go out with them to show how fun he is (because all Amber does is belittle him, and because Mike is Mike).

Doesn't really matter if it works out in the end, but the point is just getting more of Ethan's life and introducing a new character. Like I said I dunno Ethan's major, but I'd make it a drama class (or club) thing, and then you have the idea of wanting good chemistry driving Ethan's desire to get along.
>>
>>88756634
Do we know the majors of any character?

Similarly, what do we know about some characters that we don't know about other characters? For example, we know about Joyce's and Roz's siblings. But do we know if Walky or Dorothy have siblings? It may be trivial, but it makes you wonder how much of his characters that Willis has fleshed out.
>>
>>88756778
Joyce is in Education I think. Some career that would contribute nicely to being a Christian homemaker. Walky's a Communications major, because lol, communications majors. Sarah's prelaw, Dorothy's some poli-sci thing, Billie's Journalism, Amber's compsci, Carla's into Engineering shit, and Mary's possibly an art major.

considering that these are largely freshman, it's likely that a few of them haven't figured out what they're majoring in, but let's be honest, the real explanation is that Willis is too lazy to draw multiple classrooms and design new background characters.

Also
>But do we know if Walky or Dorothy have siblings?

Sal, you idiot.
>>
>>88756778
>Do we know the majors of any character?
Yeah
Joyce - Childhood education or something like that for home schooling
Dorothy - PoliSci
Walky - Communications
Billie - Journalism
Sarah - Pre-Law (along with Raidah for sure. Jacob I think as well but I don't remember how explicit that was)
Dina - Archaeology?
Amber - CompSci
Danny CompSci
Sal - no clue, although she's taking the hardest level of maths. along with Mike, Walky (who has said his major doesn't require it), Billie (who I can't imagine needing it for hers) and Joyce (ditto)
Mary - I think it's Art >>88741965, but I dunno the specifics.

I think the list of those we have no idea on is MIke, Ethan, Ruth, Joe and Sal.
>>

>Holy shit, you're right. Dina's just a shittier variant on Hannelore

>>
>>88757309
Hannelore's less shitty in that her aversion to sex and mental issues actually get some exploration, and Jacques actually lets her do shit to counterract her problems, like getting a job and going on a pseudo-date and improving to the point where she can hug people without hyperventilating. But yes, Dina's sexier. Hannelore's cute, but tiny Asians beat lanky blondes for me.
>>

I'd say the only good thing about it is the expression in the third panel. but if the joke is "i'm bored wheres annabeth" or "I need idiots in my like, where's annabeth (she's an idiot"

than the first panel can go and the second two are sort of necessary, that fourth panel is some bullshit though, it should be focused on a facial expression like the other three, and panel one is too sloppy looks like she has a beard instead of freckles, but for me at least that third panel is pretty good. worth keeping.
>>
>>88757144
>Why does Willis treat his only gay character so poorly?!?!?!
He has exactly four gay characters, but Ethan is the only male one.

Becky, Daisy, and Leslie are the other 3, and they are also defined by their sexuality. They also don't seem to have many friends.
>>

>>88758927
Daisy's, and until recently Leslie's, position in the strip didn't really warrant deeply connecting them as they weren't focus characters. Becky at least has an excuse, but its weird that Ethan still only has Amber and Mike.
>>
>>88759447
>That's pretty much what happens. You go to school, get your doctorate, then start looking for positions.
But there is so much more than that. When I was getting my undergrad, I had a total of 5 different majors, played in a gaming club, had boyfriends, made friends, went to movies, writing books, playing MMOs, etc.

When I was in grad school, I had time for relationship drama, wanting to murder my roommates, teaching classes, tutoring, helping my boyfriend with his homework and writing, grading papers, and D&D 2-3 times a week.

I was in grad school for 2-and-a-half years and still had a full life. I had to turn down invitations sometimes, but I had so much I could do most of the time. If all she did was school, then she's just a very dull person with no social skills at all. The early stages of teaching college students and preparing to move forward in your career are huge, life-changing events. And the decisions that led Leslie to teaching are way more interesting rhan her sob story.
>>
>>88759640
I did have a friend who, by all accounts and her own vigorous testimony, didn't do much besides go to class, do gospel choir and go home and watch TV. But even then, she had the time to goof about.

Unless you're going into one of the super-competitive fields, like med school or law, then you're only slightly more busy than the average undergrad. At least, I hope. Otherwise the next 2-4 years are going to be pretty shitty.

Here's the new strip.

I guess Patreanon is going to have to deliver with Mary. Today's just more Robin/Leslie crap. Oh, and it's something about blackmail again. What a twist. Fuck this; call me back when Mary shows up. I miss her.
>>
>>88762532
>I was mad at you!
>but not enough to wake you up when I came over here!

god I hate Willis
>>
>>88762624
Well, it makes sense since Robin clearly likes Leslie.
>>
>>88762532
While I can't be angry at the classic gag he used, even if it is almost impossible to fuck up, after checking the strips in them in the bar at no point do we see anyone in the background doing anything that could possible being construed as taking pictures of them. Not even a single smartphone to be seen.
>>
>>88762644
It makes since since this version of Robin clearly has a cognative disability.
>>
>>88762532
I just realized that this Jake Manley is, right now, one of the most important figures in Robin's petty, petty life, and yet we haven't even seen a picture of him yet
>>
>>88762624
>>88762644
Robin was also drunk. Also does anyone else think the shading makes it look like Robin has a black eye?
>>
>>88762678
>Also does anyone else think the shading makes it look like Robin has a black eye?
Not really.
>>
>>88762678
Robin wasn't drunk when Leslie left, and if she was later, how did she find where Leslie lives?
>>
>>88762688
Really? Her left eye is consistently shaded, and just her left eye in panels 1, 2, and 3, despite the the scene being lit from that side.
>>
>>88761601

I saw this in that reactions thread and considered posting it.

I'm glad you did.
>>
>>88762678
I think it's supposed to be shading from her forelock.

Also, I kind of like the phrasing of Leslie "doing her gay stuff all over Robin." One of the more realistic lines of this whole debacle.
>>
>>88762532
This is an extreme amount of "will they won't they." We already know Leslie makes Robin sploosh all over, I doubt anything else will actually stay in the way of them coming together.
>>
>>88762532

Where's the joke, Willis?!?
>>
>>88717229
Why discuss a comic that nobody likes, that hasn't improved in any way, and whose author's existence could be completely ignored and everyone's life would be better?

I'm not saying you can't discuss it
But why have a daily general?
>>
>>88762676
Don't bother trying to make sense out of the election story. Jake Manley is apparently positioning himself as the conservative, family values candidate and is using dyke-baiting against Robin despite being the Democrat candidate.
>>
>>88762987
Technically it's not daily. We just post slowly enough that threads can last a few days.

At this point, personally, it's habitual. We can and have stopped making threads, but we fall back into the habit of creation every so often. As for why DoA, it's because there is potential that is unfortunately lost when Willis puts ink to paper.
>>
>>88762987
It's the gift that keeps on giving. Plus we want lewds.

>>88762947
Robin loses the election then moves in and mooches off of Leslie while using her status as a lesbian to shut down Roz whenever she bitches about Robin's conservatism.
>>
>>88762987
Originally, patreanon would just start these threads whenever they had new contraband to deliver. But then people started making the threads without patreanon, and they became a thing onto themselves. And now they live on even though patreanon does not.

It was always worse the first day after a patreanon disappears, because then we'd have nothing to talk about and it would inevitably get hijacked by Dewd and people arguing about Dewd
>>
>>88763055
>Plus we want lewds.
Yeah, that too. We love laughing at the Escher anatomy.

Speaking of which, how have we STILL not gotten the newest one? Is Ruth/Billie that unappealing?
>>
>>88763077
It's not always Dewd, thankfully. The last thread was hijacked by the Willisfag.
>>

>>88762532
>you were sent to get compromising pictures of me!
>so i came over to your house and slept in your bed with you
>>
>>88762987

>>
>>88763101
I might actually prefer the usual Dewd Arguments. Talking with that guy was just offensive to my artistic sensibilities near the end. He's just so inherently wrong about how art works.
>>
>>88763130
Come to think of it, if somebody took pictures of the two at the bar, then it could stand to reason that they would have followed either Leslie or Robin (or, if the photographers were working as a team, both) after they had left the bar. If they followed Robin, then they'd have additional pictures of her entering Robin's home, thus adding to the blackmail.

Way to go, Robin; you fucked yourself up some more.
>>
>>88763130
I think she's just mad that there's photos but she didn't get any play.

>Leslie: What do you want me do do about these photos? I didn't take them, and also I do not control the sharing of files on the internet.
>Robin: Teach, if I'm gonna get scandalized, I'd better get something out of it, now work your Lesbian sex magic on me.
>>
>>88763130
>>88763241
You know how in the prior universe Robin was a brain-damaged war vet? I'm beginning to think that Willis might have carried that over. Like some shrapnel from an IED in Iraq shaved off a dozen or so IQ points, but she's pretty, popular, and mostly normal so the local political power players put her up for election with Frieda as her tard handler.
>>
>>88763339
If DoA Robin was a war hero, it would explain how she won an election.
>>
>>88763405
It'd fit. Graduates high school, signs up for a stint in the army, gets injured saving her squad, returns home and starts working in local politics, gets popular, state party backs her to replace the current representative, Ms. DeSanto goes to Washington.
>>
>>88763339
Yet another good idea that's way more complex than anything Willis would actually come up with.

The thing about Willis is that you never get good surprises with him. Everything is either obvious from a mile away (i.e. everyone knew that Ethan and Danny were going to fuck as soon as we found out Danny was bi) or it's a surprise, but it's because Willis was being intentionally misleading (i.e. this fucking subplot) or it's a surprise because the dumb thing you thought was going to happen ended up being much dumber (i.e. Toedad's Wild Ride)
>>
>>88763551
But then why would her campaign be based on "family values" instead of her military career and history of public service?
>>
>>88763596
Easiest explanation would be that she ran on her military and public service in her prior election campaign and is running on her Congressional efforts for this one.

>>88763595
It'd also make everything about Robin incredibly depressing and Roz's actions even worse.

>>
>>88763851
What, seeing her cringing in fear from physical assault doesn't make a good villain?
>>
>>88763781
And in panels 3 and 4, Willis accidentally gives one of his villains depth again.
>>
>>88763781
>Mary thinking there are worst things than homosexuals
B-but, I thought she hated those LGBTs more than everything!? Carla even said so! Anyway, glad to see the campaign of threats of physical violence still continues unabated, without anyone stepping in. That's real justice.

I wonder if Roz had someone following Robin around or if it was a total coincidence.

>That one guy who isn't patreanon but has the strip anyway
I don't think you understand how this works.
>>
>>88763878
good point, i forget all the greatest villains live in fear of the righteous and powerful heroes.

at this point, the only arc that makes sense for mary as a villain is as a school shooter. but he's already rung that bell, wouldn't want to retread any ground that's already been covered.

>wait
>>
>>88763878
>seeing her cringing in fear
shes not doing that though
>>
>>88763781
>Mary smiling is because of intimidation
Fuck you, Billie. You'll be the first to die, likely due to your co-dependency and alcoholism.

Also, this is probably one of the few examples of Willis having a good transition from one scene to another. It's an actual flow from Robin's cell-phone to Roz's.

Also, are we equating Robin with being Hillary Clinton now? Or Bernie Sanders? I'm confused. I think Robin is just being used as a strawman for whatever politician Willis wants to rag on but is too much of a pussy to openly discuss outside of his hugbox.

Also, I want to protect Mary's smile.

Also, I'm pretty sure I've seen Roz's outfit before, back in one of those 1990s sitcoms.

Also, nice of Willis to openly name Meredith since nobody would have known who she was without the tags.

But seriously, I have no idea what my emotions are supposed to be. Roz just comes off as a bitch for ruining her sister's political aspirations again. And what the fuck is an October Surprise? Are we supposed to be in October right now? I'm pretty sure we're still in fucking September!
>>
>>88763925
He's not patreanon, he's Patreonamefag.

I don't think Willis would have Roz be responsible for fear of potential backlash. He's already skirting problems with a plot about a forcible outing being carried out by a stated liberal political candidate.
>>
>>88763781
how exactly is that supposed to work though. are the people who were gonna vote for her just not gonna show up, or actually vote for the "more progressive candidate"? and wouldnt this risk actually getting her some of the lgbt vote?
>>
>>88764043
Maybe Roz is counting on Robin's base deserting her, which would outnumber any LGBT gains she might make?
>>
>>88763992
An October surprise is an event that occurs towards the end of a campaign that can have an impact on the election. It doesn't have to literally occur in October.

Robin is Hillary Clinton by virtue of being a sleazy, gladhanding politician whose positions are designed entirely around pandering to her electorate. Robin is Trump by virtue of Willis putting Trump quotes and paraphrases in her dialogue so people won't notice she's actually Clinton.
>>
>>88763992
>Also, are we equating Robin with being Hillary Clinton now? Or Bernie Sanders? I'm confused. I think Robin is just being used as a strawman for whatever politician Willis wants to rag on but is too much of a pussy to openly discuss outside of his hugbox.
She's still Trump. This is her "grab them by the pussy" moment, that makes he less appealing to the moral right that should elect her.

>>88764043
>how exactly is that supposed to work though. are the people who were gonna vote for her just not gonna show up, or actually vote for the "more progressive candidate"? and wouldnt this risk actually getting her some of the lgbt vote?
If he's being true to the analogy, it shouldn't work. Robin will say that it isn't true, "Leslie was just coming on to her, it happens all the time cause I'm super hot" and then everyone will agree and she'll win again. Also the religious folk will still vote for her cause her ticket still follows "their stances on abortion."

Instead, Leslie will kiss Robin, but tell her no puss puss unless she comes out. Robin will be so smitten that she'll go off message and admit she's bisexual saying it shouldn't be a big deal. Then the result won't matter at all. She'll probably lose so that she can be around more? Or she'll win and still be around more, because Willis doesn't give a shit about a consistent world.
>>
>>88763781
>using her teacher
>to slander her sister
>to ruin her presidential campaign
And somehow Mary is the villain, because she says mean things.
>>
>>88763781
>Billie uses blatant bullying, intimidation, and actual violence in order to completely suppress another student
>She's in the right, so this is somehow acceptable

So Billie is going to end up becoming Ruthless 2.0 or something? She's probably alcoholic, violent, and self-righteous enough for the job.

What is even happening. I don't know any Christians who were raised in the north that act like this.

The important thing is that Roz and Billie never face any repercussions or comeuppance at all, because they are the heroes.
>>

>inb4 Billie becomes the new RA

Coordinating everyone on the floor to bully a specific student shows great leadership abilities and a sense of communal awareness that is necessary for being a good RA.
>>
>>88764206
How is Roz a hero?
>>
>>88764230
She has rightthink.

You see, heroes have right-think, villains have wrong-think.

So if you hate LGBT people but just stay in your room in hopes that you don't have to encounter them and have altercations that would upset you both, you're more evil than someone who loves them but outs her sister for political gain.

Decrease in turnout by religious and social conservatives. No LGBT gains since she has a history of anti-LGBT legislation.

Realistically unlikely to cost Robin the election, as Indiana's 9th congressional district was won by Republicans by 15% points. Hell, if Manley's as openly liberal as Roz claims he'd be be in a very weak position. IRL, the 2016 Democratic candidate for Indiana's 9th district ran on a limited government, pro-military, low tax platform without a mention of LGBT issues or abortion.

a thought occurred as i try to go to sleep

the overarching theme of dumbing of age seems not to be forgiveness
but vindication

when was the last time any character forgave another for their actions, or was forgiven by another

now consider the number of revenge plots, acts of violence, and other scenes of wanton destruction, both of the self and against others
>>
>>88764970
You are 100% right.

I actually mentioned this when he referenced Steven Universe. Steven Universe is a show about forgiveness and understanding that other people are coming from a different place than you. And, you know, well-written lesbians. So it's basically the anti-DoA.
>>
>>88764205
>hates gays and other lgbts

Which only endears her to me more
>>
>>88764230

She isn't.

But remember who Willis' target demographic is. These people have a very warped outlook on the world

TLDR: She's a hero only to heavily deluded people
>>
>>88764970
>>88765003

I believe the general mentality under which that sort of thing is justified is "kindness and forgiveness are expected of us and we don't have to conform to your shitlord standards". I suppose a resolution not to endear oneself to the "other side" for the sake of not being easily put down.

Which I always found somewhat amusing for practitioners, most or all of whom are members of a tiny minority that sort of relies on the goodwill of a majority they'd rather piss off.
>>
>>88764471
>But it's funny that you thought that something good would happen to your shit waifu

I thought nothing of the sort

What I expected was confirmation of being right about what horrible people the "heroes" of this strip truly are.

And boy did I get it. So in the end this strip pleases me immensely. I got exactly what I wanted out of it and Mary's involvement. It feels good to be proven right once again

God, Willis is such a horrible person. He fucked up making Mary a true villain with the "misgendering" horseshit, so he goes out of his way now to make her cartoonishly-evil -- oh so pissed I can't even-

And the Billie the Bully shit -- yeah, that's justice, Willis, having someone beat up on a person smaller and weaker than them. You're a morally-bankrupt coward who can't write a good story. You should be sweeping floors for a living.
>>
>>88763991
She was cringing inside, Anon. She should have just told Billie to fuck the fuck off. Beating people up in college can get you expelled. Hell, Amber should be in jail right this minute, with Billie & Ruth not far behind.
>>
I don't even know how Mary is supposed to be villainous in the latest strip.
>>
Where's the porn?
>>
>>88776223
Yeah, it seems like the second last panel's expression is supposed to be fear and that's why she acts as nice as she does in the last one. The stuttered "I" reinforces that in the last panel.

>>88763781
I say "seems like" because I do think that the framing and composition of that second last panel is pretty shitty. Billie has her arm bent and is making a fist to physically intimidate Mary, but their positioning doesn't even make it apparent that Mary could see her. I think doing it the way they're positioned in panel 4 would've been better.
>Crowd - - Mary - - Billie.
Mary is facing the camera and looks towards Billie, gets intimidated and then turns to give her send off. But the size constraints of the strip didn't allow for that.

Or maybe putting the "Ahem." bubble on the distant Billie in panel 4, crossing over into the next panel, and having the next one be a close up of Billies posture with a focus on her fists, basically switching over to Mary's perspective and what is frightening her.

Or, the second to last panel could have a mostly off-panel Billie with just her fist blocking Mary. Mary has a recoiling posture, and the "Ahem" comes from off panel to the right.

Dude, you turned an attempted rape into an actual rape.
>>
>>88776813
well, that was needed for some stronger character development.
>>
>>88776471
Mary expressed her disappointment in a political candidate's scandal instead of doing a touchdown celebration dance. Therefore, she must be brought into conformity via the threat of violence. That is what it means to be a villain in DoA.

In front of Robin there is this weird stick thing that I thought was supposed to be a shitty rendering of a tap handle, it appears in this strip and in the December 14th strip. It doesn't appear in the December 18th strip, which is framed from behind the bar. The tabloid pic sorta lines up with it's position, which leads me to believe that apparently someone was hiding under the bar with a selfie-stick and somehow neither Leslie nor Robin noticed the occasional smartphone popping up and taking their picture.

Remember that he flamed out of college after a year, spending most of it hiding in his dorm room. His College Experience is not an indicator of that of other students. It's why it's basically written like a summer camp plot.
>>
>>88778770
And yet people seem to treat "Dumbing of Age" as if it's a true-to-life look at college trials and university tribulations and the like.

I'd submit that "Roomies" is more realistic than "Dumbing of Age" if only because Willis was actually in college when he started the comic.
>>
>>88775374
I remember that one! Good job man, you should do more
>>
>>88778770
Summer camps are actually pretty structured, moreso than college. This is more like a halfway house plot. I mean, almost everyone is already some flavor of mentally ill or retarded.

>>88778965
DoA has a lot of elements that are true to life; the problem is that they don't have true to life resolutions or work on a realistic timeframe.
>>
>>88779141
The elements may be true to life, but the situations certainly are not. And you can't exactly have one without the other, or at least you can't have the two if they don't mesh well.

Just look at how Willis tried dealing with transsexual discrimination by having the tranny instigate an argument.
>>
>>88778068
Hey man, that's life, it happens, your friends wont always be there to save you.
I should know.
>>
>>88779713
You can make the trans discrimination thing work while keeping the trans person in the wrong, but you can't do it when your lead-in is a bunch of cartoony antics and the "Oh Shit" moment is a vague insinuation that leaves a portion of your readers wondering what's going on because the insinuation only works if they read an out-of-story statement or picked up on a single, slightly less ambiguous hint you dropped a few years back.

>>
>>88781296
stick to sans serif fonts, they're easier to read.

really, your old font was fine, but that page just looks awful text-wise.

If the content of her writing isn't what's important, the fact she's saying it is, just have part of her dialogue visible in the bubble, don't cramp the text to fit it all.
>>
>>88767032

I realize mot of the cast are terrible, petty people. But Roz is coming across as the worst of the lot. What does she have to gain? Just smug satisfaction that she ruined her sisters life? Why does she want to ruin Robin's life? Just the fact that she CAN? I can't recall hearing her motivation

Doing so because Robin threatens something Roz cares about is one thing. It's still pretty shady, but its a believable reason. But we dont even hear THAT.

Doing so simply for shits and giggles is just unforgivably petty
>>
>>88771734

And words dont work the way they do when Robin says them
>>
>>88781687
I can't imagine how we are supposed to root for Roz at all.
>>
>>88781687
I think she thinks she's doing what she does for the greater good. Of course, the problem is that doing something for the greater good shouldn't be at the cost of somebody directly related to you.

I just wonder why she claims to be a champion of reproductive rights when she's having sex with condoms. If anything, she should be having unprotected sex and aborting every fetus instead. Now THAT'S a display of sexual liberation!
>>
>>88779886
Hell, if Willis actually cared about Social Justice, there's a whole history of minorities having extra trouble getting support in the face of bigotry because they were, by one way or another, socially unpopular. It'd be a lot more compelling if Carla got called a slur unprovoked and she had to scramble to get people to stand behind her because everyone knows her as a complete asshole.
>>
>>88782909
Yeah, the Mary-Carla feud doesn't even make sense from a story-telling perspective since there is zero tension, except when Ruth interjected herself and got smacked down, and even that was solved practically off-screen with minimal effort.

So we've got Dorothy; the somewhat quiet girl who's got her life relatively well organized and is smart without waving it in everyone's face. She's a bit odd at times, but has it together.

And then there's Roz who hands out birth control brochures while wearing a giant condom on her head and goes out of her way to shove her beliefs in everyone's face whether they like it or not.

And Willis would have us believe that Dorothy's unapproachable while Roz is the everyman?

>>
>>88783713
Partially because there aren't even any clear analogues. Willis somehow fucked up making a Trump analogy out of Robin by accidentally making her a Clinton analogy. And then he fucked up Roz/Dorothy being an analogue for Trump/Clinton by not overtly making analogues in their situation.

It's like he's going for political commentary through interpretive dance.

>>88783739
If Leslie is closeted, then this certainly isn't going to end well.
Especially if we're being led to believe through her having brought up her backstory twice that her past will catch up to her now that she's probably made local/statewide news.

>>88783768
Carla at least got yelled at by Billie in one strip.
Then again, it was literally one strip. After that, their conflict was dropped in favor of Billie punching Mary in the face.

Like I implied earlier, damn near everybody in this comic seems to think their problems are better solved through physical violence against each other.

>>88783792
Nah, Ruth apparently knew but she didn't out Carla to everybody.
Hell, there's actually more of an argument that, in describing why they should shun Mary, Billie outed Carla as trans to everybody.
>>
>>88783435
>>Aw. That’s real sadness from Mary, not cartoon-villain anger over her schemes failing.

I don't think so. I remember Leslie's mother being, if not on nice terms with her daughter, than at least stiff conversational terms. Like, she'd been highly disappointed in Leslie's homosexuality and still was, but she didn't ooze hatred. Or something to that effect.

I think it was later, as Willy got deeper and deeper into the SJW cult, that she became more and more demonized as just another bigot. The strip where Malaya tries to put her down for not liking her daughter's lesbianism springs to mind (in which Willy, perhaps unintentionally, once again gets us on the side of "the bad guy" by having Mom casually blow Malaya off with snark).

I don't have a good memory of early Leslie's Mom, though.

I still wonder if this means Roz was more involved than just getting Leslie and Robin to meet each other.

Why isn't any one just coming out and saying that this is fucked up? Hell, even Leslie considered doing it. I have to admit it does match the M.O. of some 'progressive' people who convince themselves that hurting someone is worth it to solve some perceived injustice, but I'm still surprised no one has called this specific thing out as vile.

>The last strip of 2016 features Mary, and it's also the only strip this storyline in which Dina appears. What a cruel mistress 2016 is.

Oh, wait, that's Willis' Twitter. Here's what the comments have to say:

>She’s probably just said she can’t say something homophobic and awful about Robin because Billie owns her now.
><3 Billie

>Mary, I want to introduce you to something. Perhaps you’ve heard of it? It’s called the Golden Rule. Oh, you haven’t. Never mind then. Have a good time in Gehenna.

>“Haha, someone’s being potentially outed against their will and I can be happy about it because I didn’t personally do it.”
>Eat, like, a whole bag of dicks, Roz.

>Mary needs another beating.

>So, like… on one hand I’m happy Robin doesn’t get to be president (she would not do well, and this way she has more time to give to Leslie~)… But on the other hand… I really wish this was not how it happened.
>Because outing people is not okay. I understand wanting to out people who’ve harmed the community, either through hate speech or legislation (or in any way, really). I get it. I do. But it’s just not okay. Not when things like Orlando can still happen.
>You done fucked up, Roz.

>I don’t hate Dina.I just like her less and less with every strip

>Mary “knew” Robin wasn’t straight the same way Leslie did.

>Wait, why is Roz dressed like Annie Hall?

>I wonder if the race for the R.A job, between Roz and Dorothy, will end up coming to a vote, but it will be 50/50. With Mary being that last voter.
>However, I do feel like Mary would cast her vote for Dorothy pretty fast, I mean Mary activity hates Roz on a personal level, she doesn’t know shit about Dorothy.

I understand Mary was supposedly blackmailing them, but she didn’t really make them do anything at all? Like really, what am I missing in this?

Cerberus:
>Because she was trying to bully the RM’s “favorite RA” into suicide using knowledge of her queer identity as a weapon, largely in retaliation for asking for carte blanche in harassing a trans student, and nearly caused an attempt that required hospitalization of said “favorite RA”?

>I mean it’s basically a Tyler Clementi situation that was only cut off at the pass due to Carla being a force of nature:

>And Mary can claim clean hands and “not technically forcing Ruth to attempt”, but that’s complete bullshit as recognized by actual legal authorities. Harassing someone into feeling so trapped that they attempt is a crime and while it is not treated as equivalent as the attempted murder it so frequently is, it honestly probably should be.

Yotomoe:
>She wasn’t trying to “Bully her into suicide”. She was trying to get her way, which is diametrically opposed to what Ruth wanted to do and caused her a lot of stress. I don’t believe that her intention was to get Ruth to kill herself.

>She literally sang “Ding dong the witch is dead” when she knew she sent her to the hospital:
http://www.dumbingofage.com/2016/comic/book-7/01-glower-vacuum/considering/
>And intentionally deprived her of any of her coping strategies despite knowing she had clinical depression.
>She doesn’t want any of the blood on her hands, but would have very happily accepted a suicide or two as the result of her bullying.

Yotomoe:
>I mean, I saw that as more of a “The king is dead. Long live the king” In that she doesn’t intend for Ruth to actually be dead. But, such as the Wicked Witch is the leader of the evil part of Oz, Ruth was the leader of the floor. So “Ding Dong the Witch is Dead” means she’s no longer in power, and also I didn’t like her so she’s the villain of the movie.
>Also the coping strategies she was denying her was her (admittedly) toxic relationship with Billie, and also she kept her tryst with her a secret because she wanted to use that power over her. I think she wasn’t even privy to the extent of Ruth’s depression. She was just trying to twist the power in her direction with little concern for how it affected either of them. I believe even Mary would be sad if she found out Ruth killed herself.
>I mean she’d probably ruin it by saying something about how she’s probably in hell or how this proves gays just aren’t all there mentally, but I still don’t believe her intention was for Ruth to kill herself.

And that's it so far.

Why are you bringing the comments section here?

Did we not come here specifically to get away from the comments section?
>>
Here's an interesting comment I just found:
>Oh Mary~ Maybe you need to burn alongside Joyces Youth Pastor in that same fire Walky talked about.
>You know I hate Mary, not because that’s the reason why she exist but because there’s nothing more to her than this. Does her character have any morality? How about regret, love, compassion, respect, honor, charity, anything? I mean I’m not asking for her to turn away from being a heel I’m just saying is her growth going to go in any direction or is she just a obstacle for some of the other cast.

You could ask that about any other character and have just as incomplete an answer as you'd find for Mary.

We're on page eight and auto-saging. Anything goes.

yoto, I love ya man but the more you argue with Cerb the more likely Willis is gonna ban your ass

Who will expose the comment section to cheesecake then?
>>
>>88784905
I'm done anyway. Jesus christ. The mental gymnastics they go through. I feel physically ill trying to explain reason to them. But OKAY. Mary is a diabolical evil villain who's intention was for Ruth to kill herself.
>>
>>88784942
I know it sucks cause some people really are in situations where they're mentally unstable and in an abusive relationship where the other person is trying to get them to kill themselves

but Cerberus is just...just not a part of the world around her, she's like a screeching poltard you just gotta let her screech until she tuckers herself out
>>
I'm thinking of that one idiot who came in here trying to convince us to DDOS Willis's website.

You know what would be better? Hacking into his images and editing every strip with Mary in it so she has an old-timey villain mustache.

>>88784981
I really do feel sorry for Cerberus because, judging from what she's said about herself and the level of her paranoia and delusions, she's been through some shit.

I just hope that she finds a more positive way to deal with her issues than spending tons of time jousting against windmills in the name of a webcomic artist who doesn't really care about her.

The DOA comment section is like a containment board of mouthbreathing babies who never leave their house and can't think of anything outside of the internal. Everyone is so in their own head that once they identify someone as "good" or "bad" they then believe that everything that person does is to that end.

It's like they're not considering that...in Mary's head, she's a good person. To be fair, I don't think Willis does either.

>editing every strip with Mary in it so she has an old-timey villain mustache.

Better: Editing every strip so that Mary's the hero.
>>
>>88785055
we can't work miracles anon
>>
>>88785055
That'll take effort and it'll be spotted immediately. Old-timey moustaches are more subtle and we'll be able to escape detection for at least half a day.

I'm the guy who found that due to how Willis queues his strips early, it's possible to access them. I'm also the guy who wants to find a way in so that we can read all the strips ahead of time.

I feel like the only way to do it is to brute-force the URLs, though. I need to learn Python.

>>88785123
it would be nice just to dismantle Willis' precious buffer

I know it wouldn't really affect his readership but it would be fun
>>
>>88785067
>>88785098

Go big or go home?

Nah, it was just a pipe dream.
>>
>>88785139
It would be interesting how he would respond if he caught word of it. Other than uploading strips manually at the stroke of midnight, there isn't much he COULD do about it.
>>
>>88785157
Willis would probably bitch about it on Twitter for awhile

it wouldn't affect his site traffic and nobody would know what he was talking about through his tweet

so kinda business as usually we just make Willis grumpy
>>
Oo! Oo! Replace Mary with Aku!
>>
>>88785123
Hmm. That's an idea.

I'll see if I can dig up the tools for that. I haven't touched code in years, but if I can find a program, I can try and play script kiddie
>>
>>88785188
Willis' site can't be too hard to crack, he's not a computer kinda guy

I would guess he got his site set up by a third party, square space or something maybe?
>>
>>88785173
Hurrah!

Still, I don't see why he wouldn't take some form of action.

>>88785188
I've found it's possible to get an HTTP request code from a URL via Python (200, 403, 404, etc.). So if I can figure out how to plug that into a script, next comes brute-forcing URLs for the strips, as well as looping the program as it tests URLs.

I was going to try and rig something up when I get back from Christmas vacation.

>>88785208
Wordpress. He uses a custom theme called Comicspress. Or Comicpress. I forget.

Willis' buffer is set up two to three months in advance full of comics, all of which are accessible if you know the direct URL to the comic image. For example, tomorrow's strip (Jan. 1, 2017) is accessible through ".../comics/2017-01-01-gambit.png". This should apply to every comic in Willis' buffer, which is shown on the front page of DoA.com.
