It would depend on a lot of things.

If I had a really subtle mutation and my life were otherwise a good one, I might just go about my business and never let anyone know what was up. I'd just go about my business and if possible use my powers in subtle ways to make my life better whilst engaging in anonymous online discussion about pro-mutant issues.

If I had a subtle power and my life were really shitty? I could see myself siding with Magneto and company out of resentment and a frustrated sense of entitlement. Doubly so if I had a really obvious mutation like horns or wings or something.

Now if I had a happy life up until the point where I manifested some really obvious and glaring powers, I think I'd go to the X-Men with the idea that fighting for a future where guys like me could just go back to living that nice life someday without racial stigma might seem more appealing to me.

It all really comes down to what power I'd get as a mutant, but also whether or not Xavier is being portrayed as a legit caregiver who is honestly trying to make a better world of coexistence opposed to the Machiavellian schemer who got numerous X-teams killed, mind wiped his prize student to forget about that. I'd be even more wary of Cyclops if he's running things and his comic history is intact. No good would come of that.

Magneto's position and modus operandi is usually fairly consistent, only it's "scheme and kill/dethrone humans" all the time and I don't want to live in the fucking sewer either just because I developed scales and dragon's breath powers.

So an on the level Xavier would be my go-to, and if he was really a scheming chump, then fuck it. I'd go start my own peaceful co-existence group and not make a fucking task force unless it was *absolutely* necessary to train kids with laser or tornado powers so they don't up and kill people by accident.

Really this was always my big issue with the X-men. Who decided they where a species? That's not how it works, you're not a species because of a gene any more than all the red heads in the world are a species.

I do love wasps, they are fascinating creatures. However, I'm smart enough not to put them down my pants or give them opportunities to sting my junk. My next move is to steal a superweapon from Tony Stark's basement, I'll turn the lights off before he shows up so I'll have the advantage and defeat him. I don't care what my powers are, because I would do virtually nothing with them that would warrant me picking a side. Fighting crime and injustice is a sucker's game. For most powers, I would only use them to better my own life in minor ways and leave it at that. If the power is in the cure cancer/end world hunger tier, then I'd probably use them to better humanity in broader strokes, but in a way that doesn't make me a target.
