I always hated this. I think futurama did this and I couldn't care anymore because I knew it was a different character then what we started out with.

I think it was the "late Phillip J. Fry" episode where the cast we followed were now in the last universe that died and Fry, Bender, and Farnsworth just stuck themselves into the new universe, none of the cast is the same though except those three. Rick and Mortey doing this didn't bug me as much though for some reason, even though they made it more dramatic. I guess it just being shrugged of is what bugs me.
>>
>>88680396
Didn't Futurama did that the previous season with the original Fry dying as Lars?
>>
>>88680396
Futurama didn't entirely shrug it off though, since being from an old universe was one of the reasons Fry could defeat the brains, right?

I prefer alternate universe storys were a single event changed. Like a what if scenario of a specific event or a specific choice that changes the outcome of the series than on after.

It's cool to see the different universes or what ifs turn out in different ways and gives what the characters do in our story more weight.

In that same episode everyone on one of the versions of Voyager died. And there was an episode where Janeway died repeatedly. Putting the attention on Kim and killing him and replacing him with a different one meant they wanted to flesh out his character more, not that they hated him.

You know what character the writers hate by who gets the fewest episodes focusing on them. In voyager that was Chakotay, Neelix, B'elana

When nationalism and racism become taboo, people with self esteem issues who are too unskilled, lazy or "respectful" to form an identity through some other activity in order to feed their egos and feel superior to people who don't belong to the group they feel identified with, they choose simply masturbate to the only thing they've been told they have since being born, that no one can take from them no matter what they do and that no one can feel unidentified with or offended by (or so we are told); being human.
As if that was worth anything by itself.

The HFY sentiment makes up completely imaginary beings to make oneself feel superior to without putting any effort in being remarkable or useful at anything in particular, nationalism, racism is exactly the same thing only that now is frowned upon by society. It's all just elitism, except that the general case can be justifiable sometimes, such as a violinist feeling disdain towards a violist because the latter is objectively a less demanding career (although still necessary).

>>
>>88689292
>People do take from their identities and worth what they can get
Well yeah, but at least in these cases you have something real to measure yourself with, even if subjective. Even your nationality comes as consequence of someone's actions and has repercussions on your self, being human doesn't, it's the laziest trick in fiction; sometimes they don't even justify why humans are better than anything else, at least some religions say that humans are the sons of gods or can achieve some sort of divinity, but in fiction we sometimes give ourselves attributes that some may even find unremarkable, undesirable or simply unreal.
Do you know the STALKER series? they are based on a russian novel called "Roadside Picnic" which I love because it incidentally exposes everything wrong with this type of fiction as done it the west by doing the complete opposite; resulting in a story about humans being humans, instead of one of humans or deus ex machinas being awesome, or aliens being cool/evil/human/etc.
>>
>>88689750
I think with both nationality and humanity it depends on what the author is trying to say about it and how relevant it is to the characters. Like obviously it's stupid to make this big stake in national pride if the character isn't very patriotic nor represents any values or achievements. With humanity it's impossible to generalize what measures a man because man is the only measure of himself. We have no one and nothing else, and we know even if a fictional work tries to introduce otherwise it's still fiction written by man and man's perspective ultimately.

Take Mereum from HxH and his gripe against Netero. Togashi tries to make this big stake in the will of Humanity and how even against brutal genocidal ants they'll always outpace and out-evolve these powerful bestial creatures.
But this fails for multiple reasons. On a thematic level none of the characters are very human, they all act like stilted near-autistic calculating fighting machines with very little humanity or such, which doesn't differentiate the ants. And secondly, the King DID survive the shitty dirty bomb anyway rendering Netero's speech worthless. Considering the King seemed confident he'd survived and could now outlive any number of those bombs (Sans the radiation poisoning), the unlimited evolution and will of Humanity failed.

In fact it's so subversive, a lot of people take away from the arc that he humans were basically little more than petty insects and the ants, which were becoming more human the actual "Humanity" of the story. It's a way of saying humanity isn't tied to your genes or species but transcends it entirely and signifies whatever "Humanity" is.

The humans act like inhuman survival-oriented cranks and the ants act like humans. That makes the Ants actually human, and makes being literally 'human' count for shit.

>That makes the Ants actually human, and makes being literally 'human' count for shit.
Now you see that, we are calling ants the humans of the story now, because our humans don't act like we like to think humans are supposed to act, so we dehumanize them, and we call the ants new patterns of behavior -that the story counts as positive- human-like. But I get that's not the point of the story, though, it strays from mine; and I know, we need works of fiction that impulse morals and values that we deem necessary for positive communing (so does a country or any group with it's people locally) and humanity needs to love itself despite what it is... but not for what some want all of it to believe it is, yet isn't; or by exaggerating what we are or change the reasons to why we do some things (I'm sure you have seen that "humans are scary" -which spends half of it's space accounting for actions that nearly all lifeforms on this planet can achieve and calling them dangerous or amazing- picture at least once, or that tumblr post about an hypothetical dialogue between a flabbergasted species of aliens and humans retelling rather meagerly some comparatively unremarkable historical events) to feel like a super special snowflake of a species.
Why not talk and feel proud for what we have achieved that is actually worth mentioning and for what they are worth, regardless of what a super advanced star-faring civilization that may or may not exist, or a termite colony could think about it?
>>
>>88689092

You said the ant were acting human meaning the humans of this story are not humans; because the ants were the ones acting like we think humans are supposed to act, which is total bullshit.

He doesn't need their help now Trunks got so many power boosts in that arc that he might as well be stronger than Goku and Vegeta.

Not him but the comics been dead to me for two or three years now. The ending would just be a spit on its grave. Midnight crew is the only thing truly of high quality from that mess of a comic.

The original Steven no longer exists, the current Steven is a past timeline version. I personally found that episode to be garbage.

>The original Steven no longer exists, the current Steven is a past timeline version.
Who's to say that Steven was the 'original' Steven? If anything, the Steven at the end that didn't disappear is technically the original since he's from further in the past and the one that started all the conflict was just another alternate timeline.

And poor Harry somehow never got a promotion. Tom got demoted to ensign and then re-promoted to lieutenant before Harry, and over on DS9 Nog started the show illiterate and went on to attend and graduate Starfleet Academy and gets promoted in the finale.
