There's a few reasons it flopped.

It neither looked like particular fun nor did it let little girls dream of being a princess (which they can then dress up as). Children don't care about a respectful exploration of another people's culture, they want a bedtime story.This film has an ugly prince and a princess dressed in a 'non-pretty' way, it's of to a bad start and spending so much of the film on BRAVE PACIFIC ISLAND EXPLORERS as a theme doesn't do anything for children.
If it can't deliver that, it needs to show from the trailers that it's fun and the film needs to deliver on the humour. Zootopia's trailers showed a funny and interesting world, as did Wreck it Ralph.

That aside, I liked it. It has pacing problems (would have been much better seeing Moana fight another monster and fuck up her sailing but then master it, Maui likewise with his hook, rather than just having a short montage) and How Far I go isn't perhaps good enough to use three times.

Wonder if they'll learn their lesson in time for Gigantic. Lots of Jack and the Beanstalk flops around and an 11 year old lead girl doesn't really fulfill a lot of girls princess fantasies.
