Well, Brightest Day and Reign of Doomsday were last "big" stories told before New 52 hit. They literally gave up, wrote whatever and waited for reboot.
You'll notice how GL kept same quality under Johns because his work there was safe.

Yeah. The reds look like monsters, but they're all people who lost something dear to them, or went through great suffering.

Since sadness isn't really a motivating force, they're chosen by the rings because they turned their sorrow into anger.

Admittedly, other corps work similarly as well. Walker lost everything, but turned his sorrow into hope, so he became a Blue lantern. But then, the color/emotion spectrum works by dualities, so Red and Blue working similarly is to be expected.
