I could see his memories altered to hide something about his past like a family that died when he was young, the last Arc left alive and a key to beating Salem or some shit.

First, we wouldn't know how it happened or how he did it. Possibly he didn't think it's reversible. Or if he did, he decided to take the risk anyway because there was already no way to kill him. Maybe he put "arc" in his name in order to suggest he go through an arc and change sides of his own will.
