Nobody is posting anything, so I might as well start
I finally finished this awful test prologue for my dumb webcomic, and it's a good 30 somethin pages long
http://vidyadeparted.tumblr.com/post/143519142838/first

If you don't wanna use that website, I got the whole thing on imgur too
http://imgur.com/a/t2SVB

I drew the first 10-20 pages months ago, just in case you are wondering why they look a lot worse than the rest of the pages
Tell me what you think. Is it actually somewhat decent or god awful?
>>
>>88565257
two Ss in embarrassing
I'm liking this story. It's a little confusing though, are they all in the game all the time? why? even the complaint department? so the mom has an account?
But there's a neat story building here and I'm actually interested in it. surprising amount of depth. these characters feel like real people
The simplistic art does nothing for me since it's TOO simple to even make out what things are, yet the lighting and placement are all great. If you've been wondering if you should graduate past geometric shapes, I say go for it. You can clearly handle it. the way you block out the scenes and use different focus and all that, I love it

Holy shit did I misspell embarrassing? Well shit that's embarrassing
The whole story is supposed to be a slice of life comic about these losers playing some online game, they aren't stuck in it or anything. The mom being there was kindof just a neat visual I thought of.

For the geometric shapes, I do want to try to improve that, but I just kept it as it was for the whole thing just to keep it the same throughout the prologue. I'll definitely try my best to make it more complex in future updates
>>
>>88565733
yeah you could just say the game got an update
I'm all for simplistic looks, as long as they're still recognizable and stand out, y'know? like, everyone recognizes a stick figure as a representation of human. These kinda don't
So is it meant to be a literal representation of what's in the game or only figurative?
>>
>>88565771
I guess the visuals could be taken literally or figuratively. I was planning on it being literal but it being figurative might also be a nice way to go

Gimme some feedback.

I'm adding a character called Negrohst (still working on the name)

The gimmick is I'm only drawing 3/5's of him, and after that's used up I'm just going to make him have a longer ghost tail.

That's stupidly dumb enough that it's perfect. I love it

Super scrub artist here, working through drawabox.

Just asking - is there a common angle I should be trying to get comfortable with to draw lines? Obviously, I should be trying to get good at drawing lines and such at every angle, but I'm kind of curious if there's one sort of most useful angle I should be working on. Like right now, I'm very comfortable drawing lines at a 45 degree angle from bottom left to top right, but I'm still wobbly drawing straight horizontal. I feel like it's a stupid question, but I'm just kind of curious.
>>
>>88567533

Hi /hyw/, I finished updating the introduction of a project this week

Do you guys ever deal with looking at past pages of your work and think that you could do better? I finished this a while back while doing a new chapter and when I look at it now I want to crawl into a hole.
>>
>>88569828
gotta admit I have had trouble following this, but I like it anyway and have it bookmarked. It might be one of those comics that you need to read all in a row to really make heads and/or tails of it.
>the rest of that
strangely yes but it takes a while. I have a subtle gradient going back where everything looks okay if I did it recently, but awful the older it is.. and it's disturbing because that never changes, so what once looked good, then okay, now looks bad.. and I know everything I'm doing now is going to be like that in the future
just crawl into the hole with the rest of us and keep drawing. Your stuff looks nice. you can draw in the hole.
>>
>>88569960

Opinion needed.

Which of these sounds like a better villain name in a fantasy setting?

>Silas Korver
>Isaac Fairchild
>Cornelius Armin
>Tobias Harkin
>>
>>88585005
I'd say Harkin's the best

Korver sounds crow inspired, which has gotten very stale and sounds way too obviously like a villain
Isaac Fairchild sounds way too 'on the nose' but would make sense with a religious character, so I place it at number 2. It also sounds a bit like you're trying too hard to make it sound like a 'not a villain' name by going too far in the opposite direction.
Armin isn't bad, but coupled with Cornelius sounds a bit too try-hard if that makes sense. It would fit perfect a steampunk setting, which you could take as either a compliment or an insult.
Tobias Harkin sounds like a real name and is fairly unique, but not in a way that sounds like you're trying to be unique for its own sake. Sounds villainy, but not in a corny way like 'Sol Badguy.'
>>
>>88585005
Depends on the villain, and what kind of person they are, what their appearance is. Silas Korver sounds like a lower class cowardly miser, while Isaac Fairchild could be a wealthy, handsome, but exceedingly cruel noble.
Tell us what you have in mind.
>>
>>88585162
He's supposed to be a fairly average individual in terms of any discernible skill. He can't really fight, has no magic abilities to speak of. The only thing he is really doing is organizing Machine Abominations in an attempt to allow them to take over the world because he sees them as Perfection.

Good evening, /hyw/, I've been lurking here forever; I'm working on a comic, but I haven't released it yet (waiting to build up an appreciable backlog, since it takes so long to complete the pages) and this lonely, stoic production style has left me antsy and wanting to share at least something in the meantime.

Fortunately, I've generated a rather large amount of sketches related to the comic (mostly on down-time at my day job), and even better, many of them are not plot related either, or at least wouldn't potentially spoil anything later.

So, to alleviate this, and maybe even get some traffic on my tumblr, and help promote the actual comic upon publishing it, I'm trying an experiment of releasing one sketch a day, every day, for about 3 months, or however long I can keep it going, since I tend to sketch at least a few pictures every week anyway.

With Christmas coming up, I decided to do some winter and holiday themed sketch comics too (pic related.) I guess I'll see if this pays off in the end!

TL;DR
Anyone manage to attract some active followers on tumblr? I haven't had much luck with my art blog thus far, but it's also been pretty slow up until now.

That's funny; I like it.
Uh, no particular reason though. I've always liked birds and horses, and drawing characters based on either, so when I saw hippogryphs in a D&D book I naturally thought it was great.

In the actual comic, I have three races based on those animals. Again, more or less just because that's what I wanted to draw, and I figured I'd stay invested in a long term project if it was what I already liked to draw.
>>
I too, shall make webcomic. I already have the characters and basic events plotted out and a fuzzy idea of the world in place. All I have to do is make the damn thing. I don't know if my art is ready though. Pic is of one of my main characters, a boy who can can magically fix broken objects or make things out of scrap with his screwdriver.

I knew it, back to the study dungeons again. Now to be fair, this is a week old and I've only recently bothered to show it online. I've been trying to go back and study anatomy and proportions for 8 hours a day for the past 2 weeks and after that I can tell that shoulders are all jacked up and the eye sockets are bit weird. I know I should've made a more recent picture to show in retrospect, but my styluses are being jittery right now so I have to wait for some new ones. I do have a scanner though so I could show pencil work if you guys really cares
>>
>>88595213
Nice meme, but I use the Loomis method too now. Spheres with the sides cut off are pretty great.
>>
>>88595229
I agree, it's not that your art is necessarily "bad" but you need to develop your style more and make it your own. No offense, but it seems like you're copy and pasting out of a "how to draw manga" book, and like you said, study anatomy and proportions, faces are easy, everything else is a pain in the ass

"how to draw manga book"
Cmon now, the picture wasn't THAT bad compared to those books.
I don't think I've ever used one of those books and I've been trying to get good at anatomy for a couple months now. The annoying part is that the whole human body is like a bunch of puzzle pieces that fit together- and if you start getting good at one part you sometimes forget the other pieces and you're back to where you started.
>>
But even so, jesus christ, what was I thinking with those shoulders....and that neck

>>88595507
Draw the entire body while practicing. It takes way long, but it's worth it. Don't bother working out the details on the body, just get the "feel" of how it should look.
Also, I figured you've probably never used one of those "how to" books, but watching anime tends to leak into people's art styles, it did for me.
>>
>>88595507
The trick with keeping anatomy and proportions correct is to constantly check it against itself (obviously this first requires an understanding of how it looks in real life) but anyway, the key is looking at how the body parts, or masses interact with each other to form the whole shape.

If you practice life drawing, or even just studying anatomy illustrations and trying to draw those, you'll start to learn how to check things as you draw, like the distances between joints, where the elbows and hands reach on the side of the torso, or how the various muscle groups intersect, and how that affects the shape of the body.

No it's a definite thing. You can study legs for a month but if you don't do it every day it can start to fade. Really the problem is remembering the form and proportions as the body turns in space which I'm starting to work on

Anon, the thing is right now you are drawing symbols, meaning you aren't thinking of your drawings as three dimentional forms, you just draw what you think these features should look like.

I am not sure how serious you are about learning how to draw, but if you really want to get better you should learn the fundamentals of drawing, to then stylize them.

This thing about forgetting how to draw something you once knew how to draw only happens if you never really learned how to draw the figure in the first place, you were just copying it.

Also, don't learn from "how to draw manga" books like these other guys are advising. Sure, some of them give you good advices, but that's because they are watered down versions of good books from real draftsmen. So it's better to get stuff closer to the source, instead of risking getting bad manga habits along with good advices.

More about fundamentals and practice here on the /ic/ sticky:

about as good as one could ask for the lines being so rough. Unless you mean the choice of colors, those seem fine.
I feel I must correct you on the tail though. Of everything else being as loose as it is, that thing looks kind of bad. The first three segments coming out of the body are fine, but once it (presumably) curls over the back, you want to start drawing them in front of each other, instead of behind. Even if it doesn't, segment 4 is really off in arrangement and the remaining ones seem uneven too.

Yeah it definitely seems like that, but sometimes people forget styles are more than simplification. It's also about exaggeration and abstraction. Ironically it's actually a really complex skill to do and you should do it last in your artistic studies yet many people start of with stylization instead of realism. Thus, when people who've done the hard work of translating their realism into an abstracted style and have it be copied by amateurs, it makes the style look bad and thus makes the original artist look like an amatuer himself.

first one's too blurry to read well, the second seems to have almost random parts of each letter thicker or thinner so it doesn't read well from a distance (parts of the letters bleed into the outline, which itself isn't evenly spaced around them)
'fitting' is tough, that's a creative decision you have to make.. but readable should always come first if you're doing word art.

Proko kinda sucks at drawing from imagination, he admits he isn't very creative, and he explains he hasn't exercised this since he got into Watt's atelier. When he draws and paints he works with models to pose for him.
Also, he doesn't draw dogs. He also doesn't draw comics.

So this page was already a side thing, made very quick and lazily, and it's about something he doesn't draw, in a style he doesn't know, in a medium he has no experience with.
It's, of course, done without looking for references for dog's anatomy, so you have sketchy fundamentals, with ugly uncharismatic characters, and to put a cherry on top, it's a mess of a page layout.

Just to drive home how lazy this was done, look at how he puts this together, with a bunch of copy and paste of the same drawing:
https://youtu.be/_c-Wul92wQc?t=9m8s

Of course, it would also be less painful if the writing wasn't terrible as well.

Some things i've decided about the story are things that I didn't intend to do at the beginning, and I'll be writing the entirety of the story rather than stopping after the first arc to judge it's popularity (if any). I still only have plans to draw the first arc for now, further efforts will depend on the actual effort and again popularity.

So I've recently started coloring and my biggest problem(aside from being bad) is not knowing what else to do with a drawing. I know it can be better but I don't know how to make it better: I don't like the shading in his face but I don't know how to make it look better.

I'd like to start my webcomic in April and hoping my coloring skills won't be below deviant art tier by then. So any coloring tips?

Case in point. We can't get rid of you.

>I drew this

And it's ugly as fuck with no sense of anatomy

>I try to trace

Thanks for at least admitting it. And yes, you fuck it up. You can't even trace properly.
>>
>>88613505
I feel you. I've been there too. Unfortunately at this stage there's nothing that you can force that will make the drawing better. A lot of artists at your skill level want to add all sorts of little details. But that's not going to make a better picture, it's just a trap people fall into.

At this point, and you won't like hearing this, but all you can do is keep practicing. There are all sorts of small anatomy problems that add up. Think of them as wrinkles and practicing is the iron that will even them out. All good artists go through it.

As far as shading goes. Fix on a single strong point of light and where the shadows will be. There's some errors, the exposed part of the forehead, the right eye. You need to figure out where hairlines work and how the hair falls. Right now you're doing just a typical anime hairstyle, and trying to apply it to a more realistically drawn head. Again all this works out with experience.

Other big suggestion is to learn how color theory applies to shading. Don't just go with darker values than your lit areas, but use actually different cooler colors.

The best practice you can get will be to just start on the webcomic itself. It just plain forces you to get better. Yes, months later when you're a better artist, you'll look back on the first pages and wish you had been better. But that happens to all artists, and delaying the beginning never helps.
>>
>>88613823
lotta good advice in here. however
not everything you dislike is anime, anon. that's a normal hairstyle, he's just messed up the facial features. if you took the eyes, nose, ears, and forehead down, it'd be about right. gotta remember to include the cranium when you design a face and hair

it really is important to learn the fundamentals of construction, but while you're still learning that you can still learn relative-placement and that'll take you far
for example think about how short the space between a nose and mouth usually is, and how thick a moustache usually is. that's how you know how to space that shit.
>>
>>88614133
>>88614317
>>88613879

It really is a good idea to sketch the head entirely before you add the hair, same for the body with any bulky clothes or armor.

Once you are familiar with proportions and how to check them by comparing distances between facial features, joints, muscle groups, etc. you can simplify the process by just doing a quick shape to mark the mass of the body and then go right to the hair/clothes.

Hey, no worries. I'm well aware my design choices aren't everyone's cup of tea.

Humorously enough, I never liked the design of Medli and the Windwaker bird-people; but that may have been more specifically that their beak was like a nose, and they had a human mouth below it, which always struck me as really weird.

Haha, I guess I'm not the only one!

Before I sat down to start making the big comic I have planned, I really thought about whether or not it would be better (or more accurately, more popular) if I had drawn the characters as humans (see pic.)

I came to the conclusion that it, in all likelihood, would probably be more popular if the cast was human... But on the other hand, I've been drawing bird and horse characters for many years, and most of the comic's characters for years too, and while it is fun to imagine what they'd look like as humans... I really suck at drawing human faces (esp. women) from my imagination.

Life-drawing I can manage, but since I'd be drawing all of this from my head, I figured I wouldn't stay motivated if I was fighting what I wanted to do with the comic.

If it ever gets popular after I release it, maybe someone can come up with their own human AU (with a rainbow cast of inclusiveness, naturally!)

My method:
1. Hand-write my word in my natural handwriting in a really thick brush
2. Re-write it a little more carefully with stylistic flairs to match the tone I'm going for
3. If necessary, resize, stretch, skew, reposition
4. Make an outline of those letters
5. Color (and possibly shade) those letters as if they're just shapes in an illustration
6. Draw in some accompanying symbol or effect

This may be a terrible method depending on what you're aiming for.

I have a question, i want to make a story about a future where the us never creates the nuclear bomb in ww2 invades japan and annexes it.

Later the nuclear bomb is made in 2061 and the world is sent to nuclear war, where most of humanity only survives in cities that can afford domes to avoid nuclear holocaust.

The stories set in the mojave desert with los angeles being the capital, with them the big bad of the series and rebels on the outside in the desert, because the capital wont let anyone in because they think that the outsiders have become less human due to years in the wasteland.

With all that shit out my question is that if its shit or not and should it have mechs in it, using this image as a size comparison only.
>>
>>88617986
>wanting to include the single worst aspect of TLOK
>>
>>88617986
Sounds a little heavily inspired by FO3:NV, but with that aside, sure, why not have mechs?

Perhaps the mechs are used to construct/maintain/protect the domed cities, or are also used in reclaiming wasteland for farming or what not.

I think the key with any unusual element in a setting is making it feel like it belongs, and has a logical reason for being there (even if the actual reason is you just think it's cool.)
>>
>>88617986
My nerd sense just wants one thing: acknowledge that nukes send out an electronics-frying EMP, giving them a secondary effect beyond the obvious human health issues.
>>
>>88617986
I love that of all the things in this scifi story, the most unrealistic is the idea of the US invading Japan and winning.
It would sure be interesting to see things like mechs and technology in general in a world where being nippwned didn't thrust japan into inventing tons of microelectronics to sell to america. Or did it still go similarly? I have to think tech would have been retarded somewhat so that certain areas didnt develop as well. Then again, that way of thinking makes it even MORE Fallout. I don't think I'm that interested in the old "you're outside of our shelters, thus you're a subhuman mutant" concept anymore. It's one thing in fallout where radiation works on comic book rules, but in real life radiation exposure CAN fuck up your kids but generally just makes you sterile and/or dead. Then again this alternate history is perfectly set up for a situation where prejudice against outsiders with potentially slightly different genes kind of remained ingrained.
>>
>>88618084

Yes but im just using that mech as a size comparison for the limit of how big the mechs i want to make.

>>88618095
Well one idea for why They're there is because the with no nuclear bomb, there was a path you could say for the invention of mechs that eventually a squad of 20 could overpower whole troops of men, causing a global arms race for them.

anons color scheme works with one color with many different saturations and hues. thus its hard to discern between shapes.

if you look at the big version its not so bad but if you look at the thumbnail you will see it clearer.

>>88622567
difference between your values and saturation is too small. bright is too bright and dark not dark enough.

if you go for plain backgrounds then make them distinct from characters. it makes characters pop and doesnt hurt eyes.

generaly go for darker colors. they are more pleasing and build atmosphere better than bright ones. the nautical theme you got there benefits from them immensly.

as you can see i changed color between your panels to dark one. this helps with focusing attention of the viewer on the panels.

go and look up theory on color in film. from my experience they explain the subject better.

>thus its hard to discern between shapes
Not really? It's got black outlines that tell the story just fine.

>if you look at the thumbnail you will see it clearer.
Nobody reads comics zoomed out that far so I don't really see the point of caring what it looks like at that size. Comics that rely on lineart don't work very well when you zoom out so much that you can't see the lineart properly, but this is a problem in the same way that it's a problem that I can't read your post if I turn off my monitor.

>dark not dark enough
If you use dark colors with black lines, that decreases the contrast with the lines and makes the reader spend more time and effort to see what's happening.

>this helps with focusing attention of the viewer on the panels.
Readers don't need help focusing on the panels, anon. They know that's how comics work. Having white gutters between the black panel borders keeps the black of one panel from running into the blacks of other panels and creating unwanted tangents, and makes it much much harder for the reader to mistake two panels for one.

>go and look up theory on color in film. from my experience they explain the subject better.
Film is a very different beast from comics. Film doesn't have outlines, so its approach to value is totally different.
Film doesn't move at the reader's pace, so it needs to instantly guide the viewer's eye in a way that comics don't.

You got me there, but I'm judt saying robots honestly don't require skill to design well. Look at all the robots in Dragon Quest, for example. They're almost exclusively spheres, cubes and tubes, but they look great.
>>
>>88626464
Well the problem is WHICH geometric shapes
western artists have this ridiculous and beyond-terrible habit
>draw a hose
>draw evenly-spaced lines around its circumference
>robot limb!
Man of Action and others in that same wheelhouse do something similar where they just draw any ol' random shape, a human, whatever, and draw random angular lines on it and say now it's a robot
>>
>>88626548
You are grossly underestimating the difficulty in drawing a mech. Observing the shapes is one thing, designing and replicating them with consistency is another. Consistent shapes in perspective is something that a good number of people on /ic/ can't even do, "someone without skill" would be completely incapable of doing it.

Even though I would like to know more about the second option, I was mostly referring to the first. Whenever I draw a background, I don't know how to begin adding various details into the scene. I mostly have trouble with this in settings that mostly feature inorganic objects like cities and such.

Probably the best advice I can give you is to look up reference images of places that are similar to what you're going for (or, even better, go there yourself and take pictures or sketch shit) and build up your visual library of interesting details that can happen in a city.
Second piece of advice is to not set your scenes somewhere non-specific. Rather than "in a city street" try "by the graffiti-covered bus stop in the bad part of town" or "by the cafes overlooking the scenic canals of the city". Try and think of the story of the place and how that story can be told to the reader.

It had speech bubbles but we removed them to work on the underlying picture.

Here's the lineart we think we may do from now on, along with how we will set the saturation.

Obviously we still have a lot to learn about the shading, and colored shading, and how light works.

What do you think?

Noted, I see it too, i'm just not sure what it is.

Hopefully I can work it out, I've been trying to make a comic for a while, but I always wake up after a good night of making "Good" art, and it looks cruddy.
>>
>>88630976
i mean it's certainly good enough that you don't NEED to quit and work on it, but if you feel up to it, I think it'll benefit from some study. because there's definitely something nice here.
>>
>>88630686
The lines are a lot more lively, which is nice, but I think you could use a third width in between the thin lines and the thick lines. Using the girl as the example, the lines where her arm overlaps her body are the same width as the ones around her eyes. If it got a little wider as it got away from her armpit, that'd be much nicer.

Also, watch out for tangents like where the girl's hair overlaps the hand of the golem behind her. It's pretty distracting.

For the shading, it's decent, but 1, it's better to have too much difference in value than not enough (on a brightness scale where 1 is white and 5 is dark, try to have the shadows at least 1 point removed from the highlight), and 2, don't be afraid of having hard shadows. Everything's kinda pillowy at the moment.

nothin wrong with this kinda comic
>>88633459
but I love that you're trying proper anatomy! you're bad at it, but you're trying and that is great!
just paste a proper guide next to yours, and look at how it differs. You can do it! I'll give you a hint but you'll remember it better if you figure it out yourself
pecs are too low, abs are too long and too low. hips are too low. ribcage is too low and therefore the elbows (which correctly line up with it) are too low. and since the arms are roughly correctly proportioned, that means you'll have to shrink them entirely. other than that all the musculature looks twisted like a khallikantzaros, but you'll get the hang of that later
>>
>>88633574
How am I supposed to keep things in proportion when then things foreshorten in space? I know that you can draw a rectangle in perspective and find the center of it by drawing diagonals but doing that for every single body part seems tedious. How the hell do I do this!?

>>88632723
Thank you, I'll definitely work on this.
>>
>>88633792
Or rather, isn't there an easier way to make sure body parts in perspective are exactly in proportion and not by guessing?
>>
>>88633792
Here's a bit of help, if you're not sure if things look right, mirror the image, it helps me see mistakes.
>>
>>88633792
You have to start making the body into rings, and then make the rings get slowly larger or smaller. Thankfully most of our body parts are round in cross-section. or if not that, something else you can easily visualize
>>
>>88633574
Don't muscles twist like that though? I know the legs do at least
>>
fuck comics
>>
>>88634619
>fuck comics
Titles for comics about fucking
>>
>>88634476
They do twist somewhat! Learning how to make them twist properly is an advanced technique. In the meantime unless you're drawing a tight-skinned musclebuilder, you can just go with the basic shapes of the muscles and you'll do just fine, the only areas you'll really have to worry about the lines from are
>where the pec meets the shoulder and/or armpit
>how the clavicles and trapezius change shape when arms are lifted
>the fucking labyrinth that is trying to draw the human crotch at different angles
>the interior of a finger as it bends (up close)
most other movements don't make that huge a difference that you have to draw them. Nobody will notice on the average person if the forearm muscles are twisted properly, or anything much on the legs aside from the kneecap changing shape when the knee's bent

>Jaw seems weird... seems to be just plugged in at 90 degrees..

You caught it quite well... it was plugged in initially, then i thought it might look fitting to the picture since this thing isn't exactly modeled after human anatomy.

That's the problem. When people say "Just compare certain body parts to others until they look right" it doesn't work because you don't know what's right in the first place. I've found the only way to improve quickly is through critiques as human eyes are garbage and what you think you know doesn't mean shit
>>
>>88647165
there's tiny little things that are just a bit off. Note the shoulders are a bit tilted, which is good, but the ends of the arms don't correspond to that tilt. Just an example.

The reason drawing humans is so tricky is that the human brain is wired to notice even the tiniest of errors. That's why practice is so essential It irons out all those little things.

Would you stop tracing and finally learn how to draw too?

Look, real talk here, fella. the US is a cruel place for brown people like you, Bones. Learn to do something with your free time(it's not like you have a job or something) so that white folks won't look down on ya.

Guys, I've noticed a problem when doing some of my drawings. Whenever I draw digitally sometimes I notice myself constantly redrawing proportions to get it correct and sometimes I look at the the drawing later and the whole thing looks off. However when I draw on paper, I seem to grasp proportions quite intuitively and even when I haphazardly do it, it still ends up being better than what I do digitally. Does anyone know the reason for this? Does anyone else have the same problem? I'd like to know as I'd prefer not to scan in sketches every time I want to make a drawing that is proportionally correct.
>>
>>88654019
how often are you zooming out and looking at the whole thing? also, how big and/or tilted is your monitor? make double sure it's calibrated properly
>>
>>88654135
I use a cintiq knockoff, but I think the problem is that I do zoom in too much
>>
Like I'll be usually drawing with the canvas 3000 by 3000 and the drawing takes most of that , and I usually have the program zoomed in about 50 percent. I use the XP 22HD btw for reference
>>
>>88654237
>cintiq knockoff
Enjoy your delay and shit pressure sensitivity.
>>
>>88654237
it's important to do your sketching zoomed out so you can see the whole thing, then go back in later for the things that you need to zoom for
>>
>>88654399
Yeah I've always noticed when I do warm up sketches whenever doing bigger pieces I'll usually just do em really small in the corner and but then the proportions always turn up way better than the actual piece I'm working on
>>
>>88654390
Pressure sensitivity levels isn't actually that important as people make it out to be. Hell, I've use less than 1048 levels of pressure and I've made dynamic lines no problem. But that doesn't really matter my cintiq knockoff as it has 2048 levels of pressure fast, response times and very little parallax (I think only about a couple millimeters actually). It's actually quite lovely. The only problems I had were with the pens themselves, sometimes one of them would jitter the cursor a lot but eventually I just got another stylus so it was all good. They're actually quite lovely.

>>
>>88654521
it's not like your program is going to be able to recognize those unless youre using a tremendously massive line.
>>
>>88654578
Really the biggest things are response time, parallax, and resolution for a drawing monitor

what? what model is it

I know that the pecs and shoulder line up around 2 heads down , I know that 3 heads down is the navel where the elbows line up with it, and the crotch ends at 4 heads down. However I don't exactly how big the ribcage or the pelvis is. Looking at Loomis's proportions it seems that the ribcage seems to be roughly 1 head and the pelvis also seems to be 1 head tall. Is this true anon?

something about these, I dunno, something seems wrong... I feel like the torso is getting closer to correct as it goes, but that the first three have really long torsos and long arms to go with. kinda like eskimos?
>>
>>88655394
I'm pretty sure Loomis's proportions are legit man
>>
fuck loomis it's a meme

well that's why I said 'seems' innit. I know I must be wrong, but there are a lot of illusions that can lead the eye astray

whether or not the date at the top might change, here's my WIP.
panel 3 is just a placeholder, i'm going to actually draw him from below. in the meantime though it's funny seeing a pasted copy tweaked with perspective as if it was a flat image.

First point; rather than listening to me, go look at a picture of the human skeleton.

Second, to answer your question;
The bottom of the side of the rib cage lines up pretty well with the elbows (and the bellybutton. But don't use that as a landmark too much, since it can move around a lot depending on posture and fat deposits). The distance from the side of the ribs to the pelvis is about the width of a fist, and the pelvis itself is about the height of your head. The sternum is about 1/3rd of the way down towards the sides of the ribs from the nipples.
>>
>>88661530
This is a decent start, but spend some time focusing on how different parts of the body can move and then go learn better perspective.
>>
>>88659975
And here's the faggot who said drawing Mechs for fun = looks good. Damn dude that looks so kewl!!1! You are so right, just slap some shapes down and you have an awesome fun mech! =^_^=
>>
>>88661530
I think you're going a bit too mechanical with it. construction is a guide but you're still flailing to put it together.
>>
>>88664447
Which parts are wrong? Please tell me!
>>
>>88662918
I know how perspective works for cylinders and boxes but right now I'm focusing on proportion not perspective
>>
>>88662735
Proportions are off
>>
>>88664605
maybe it would help if you focused more on the way joints can bend, their range of motion, how things change shape as they bend...
but really I think you're kinda missing the forest for the trees at the moment. take a break to just draw instead of studying, and that will tell us a lot more about what you need
>>
>>88664667
Are the proportions okay? though You didn't answer that. Everyone keeps telling me that I need to work on proportions.
>>
>>88664759
You didn't answer*
>>
>>88664759
are they okay? yes-ish. not entirely.
I could go clockwise around this and tell you each part that's off, but I can tell you're about to burn out and you're focusing on the wrong things
>>
Do people use felt tip pens here? What brands do you all like? Still starting out so I'd like to mess around an d see what I like. Making an order with drawabox guy's referral link, so I don't mind spending a bit more than i usually would.
>>
>>88664878
It's pretty hard to draw for fun when everyone on the internet keeps harassing you about your mistakes. But that's exactly why I want to get better, so that I can learn from those mistakes!
>>
>>88664988
But even after all that you say that I need to quit focusing on proportions. What should I focus on?
>>
>>88665139
just try to have some fun. it's christmas for pipe's sake. people criticize when you ask for it
>>
>>88665254
Sometime people do that anyway without you saying anything tho
