I have seen many threads that complain and make fun comic artist with poor drawing technique and understanding of human anatomy. But who would you say is the best comic artist, in both technique and in understanding body proportion?

[Spoiler]Dillon

As in Steve Dillon, the late Steve Dillon?

I think you should stop thinking of artist's skill in terms of a continuum and maybe more in terms of a checklist.
>>88471224
He's long dead, but Hal Foster was absolutely amazing. If anyone sold pure human motion and impact in comics, it was him.
>>88472820
yup
>>88471224
They should've given him a huge fat cock. To represent the hugely tremendous lengths mankind can achieve despite all odds.
>>88475291
The Greeks believed large cocks to be unattractive and unsightly, so as a result they gave all their statues tiny penises. Furthermore, a tiny penis helped reveal the scrotum, which was thought to be aesthetically pleasing.

maybe they just liked dicks that get big, rather than start big

It was supposed to represent his fear in the moment of facing down the giant, Goliath.

Not that that meant anything to Michelangelo, being Florentine.

Nah that's dumb as fuck. His posture and expression can represent his fear. His wang though? Let that represent us all.

They're talking about the dirty old men. They liked boys and detested their own women.

Large dicks had bestial and savage implications in ancient Greece. Priapus seems to be a pretty good reference in terms of the views of the Greeks on highly endowed men.
>>88471224
Frank Quitely, not even joking.
Bernini had a better statue of David

I don't think we're looking at the same thing.
Michealangelo is like Alex Ross, while Bernini is like Frank Quitely, imo

There's a lot of subjectivity around artistic merit and what not.
BUT, whatever answer anyone in this thread gives that isn't FRANK FRAZETTA IS OBJECTIVELY WRONG.

I love Prince Valiant. It's a hoot to read in the newspapers, but people ought to check out the hardcover collections. Great storytelling and action.

If he were quietly that face would be hideous and lumps would be everywhere. .
>>88471438
this. Especially since there's sort of a plateau with this kind of thing - if you have a perfect understanding of proportion and how to convey it, then you're set. And other people can attain this perfect understanding as well. You can't really say any one is "more perfect" than the rest because they're all the best.
>>88478958
>that don't let you get a good look at his feet.
I think you need your eyes checked.
>>88476115
All their statues had amazing asses too.

KILLER GRAMPA STERANKO, BITCH!
...
...no, seriously, it's Jim Steranko.
>>88478933
I think we can agree they're both better than Donatello's though, right? There's just not that much interesting about this one. It was a trendsetter for the time, but it doesn't hold up as much.
>>88471224
Greg Land or Erika Henderson
Land of just plainly beautiful art and Henderson for iconoclastic raw emotion.
>>88475783
I mean, we think they did, but whose authority are we trusting on that? What if the artists just had small dicks and they just tried to convince everyone that small dicks were better.
If there are accounts of women going crazy over tiny dicks, then I'll buy it.

modern society only cares about dick size because women
on ancient Greece women were non-persons. above slaves but still not even eligible for citizenship
>>88479429
Donatello's is fine; It's just not as dynamic or detailed and Bernini's and Michelangelo's respectively (because Donnie didn't examine cadavers like Mikey did)
Donnie's humanizes David, giving off a "Yeah, I just did that" pose while Mikey's is more stoic and almost humble because he did not including a sword, only the sling.
>>88482075
*did not include...
(Yeah, could have deleted and reposted, but I'm a lazy fuck)
>>88479560
Men cared more about dicks in ancient Greek society than women did. Democracy itself was essentially founded upon dicks.
How about Inoue Takehiko?
I doubt /co/ reads stuff like Slam Dunk and Vagabond, but if you check out his art, you'll find that it's probably among the best.
>>88471224
I'm really fond of Paolo Serpieri. Even his most basic sketchs are well done, and he has a perfect understanding of volume (and light).
Drawing nudes constantly must help, though.
I would say one of the best, and my personal favourite, is Bermejo. You can feel force and weight with his characters, and even his lower quality art (Like the page art of "Suiciders") leaves to shame many. He knows how forms work, and that's why he's such an effective penciler.

>If there are accounts of women going crazy over tiny dicks, then I'll buy it.
Nah, Greek women loved huge dicks - there's an episode in Lysistrata where one of the women mentions owning an 8-inch dildo (that still can't make up for her husband's dick). The thing is, though, that's part of why women were dumdums who needed men to tell them what to do. How can you expect someone to make important decisions when she's constantly thinking about enormous dicks?
The tiny dicks on statues were supposed to show that the person was ruled by logic and rationality, rather than thinking with his dick. Compare ancient-world depictions of Satyrs and Centaurs, who were ruled by their base desires and sported erections in a lot of art.

>If there are accounts of women going crazy over tiny dicks, then I'll buy it.
Greeks hated women. If women liked something it would be proof that thing was ridiculous and wrong

I think gesture is more important than realism in comics. This obsession with realism (to be as different as possible from cartoons) comes mostly from insecurity and it's why capeshit looks so stiff most of the time. Also what's the point of sheer reailsm when you can trace a photo or a 3D model and be incredibly accurate (if you do it well unlike Greg Land).
Not to mention that comic artists have to be skilled at so many different things to succeed. There are many who have great figure drawings but awful composition and panel flow. Others draw too much detail.
I think Stan Sakai is one of the greatest, he's got a simple and readable style, great backgrounds, god tier lettering and composition, great storytelling and acting with his characters. You can't ask for more from a comic artist and there's nothing in his work I wish had been improved. Same for Mignola. I love Brian Bolland too.
If /a/ is allowed, Miyazaki's Nausicaa and the work of early Toriyama have god tier comicking too.

Everyone knows about how really david is supposed to be scared shitless and his cock is retreating into himself, but do keep in mind the catholic church did edit cocks on statues and paintings bsck in the day.
