it's contrast- batman in the snow is literally black on white-- not to mention all his brooding on what's supposed to be the most joyous time of year, violence when peace and goodwill are supposed to win out. the contrast works really well.

When I first saw it, I didn't know exactly what was going on, so I cried like a bitch during the graveyard scene. Elfman can cause some serious feels when he's not going for whimsy.
