I'm always confused when somebody on here says a writer is ruining a character. Like, you know it's not a real person, right? It's a comic book character, and that means it will most likely be written by other people in the future. There is no concrete characterization for comic book characters, and if you don't like the current version, don't read this book.

It depends on how much clout that writer has and what sort of changes the writer implements. Like, no writer is gonna say something like "Lol no. Jean Grey used her powers to make Iceman gay," for instance. That's a change that's gonna stick.

But some writers actively seek to change a character in a way that *they* want (Superboy's human genetic donor being changed to Lex Luthor) while ignoring what was previously established.
