This was pretty good but the end credit scene kind of ruins the ending.

What was wrong with it?

When it was revealed there was an actual island.

In the book the dogs are saved by the author.

Wasn't that added in later on?

Bob Barker was using that line before most of /co/ visitors were born

Right, that's what I'm saying. Originally they died searching for an island that didn't exist. I'm pretty sure the dogs being saved by the author was added in later versions of the book.
Do you think the dogs fucked each other? Just to rid themselves of the pent up sexual need?

When you say "originally", do you mean "in the original draft" or "in the original print edition"? The book's ending feels like a tacked-on late addition, and I've heard rumors it was initially planned to end the same way the movie does. However, I've never actually found any concrete proof of that, and it kinda looks more like speculation that people keep passing onward as a fact. Also, sometimes people claim that the first printed and published edition of the book lacked the part with the rescue, but I haven't been able to find any evidence of that either.
If you have any sources that prove your statement about the book's original ending, I've been looking for information about it, and I'd be interested to hear.

I think the Editor asked him to change the ending, while crying.
Or Adams just became aware of how many dog related stories involve the dog dying to pick up a newberry. Though I think those kinds of awards didn't exist at the time, so I could just be talking out of my ass.

Yeah, I can't find any sources unfortunately so I'm just going by what I remember.
Any other sad movies like this?

Watership Down was made by the same people and has a few sad moments.
