I'm a big fan of the Squirrel Girl character. Love her to bits. Was glad to see her get a standalone comic. And I could look past Doreen not looking "conventionally attractive" under a given art style because, let's face it, she was ugly as sin in her first appearance and she's never been "supermodel beautiful" in many, if not all, of her pre-Unbeatable appearances (including the GLA miniseries).

But EH's art style doesn't make Doreen "plain". It makes her almost as ugly as her debut appearance, and that's saying a hell of a lot. And every other character she draws suffers from the same refusal to give a fuck about drawing faces in anything but a style so horrendous that I'd rather have Rob Liefeld draw them in her stead.

I'm all for art styles that match the tone and "feel" of a specific comic, but Unbeatable Squirrel Girl's art style doesn't deserve to represent the Squirrel Girl character - or any other character in that same comic. Even a webcomic with shitty writing doesn't deserve to have EH's art inflicted upon it.

And that's kinda my point: If Doreen was a "plain" or even borderline "ugly" character amongst a group of more traditionally attractive people, I might not mind this art style as much. But EH practically makes it a mission to draw everyone as fucking ugly as she can, and it drags the entire comic down.

I would love to read this comic. I really would. But I can't do that until it's drawn by someone who wasn't seemingly rejected by CalArts.

If you genuinely want understanding, I bought the first 8 issues because the style was unique ad fit the storytelling. You can have that set-up for free.
It's more distinctive & memorable than "house style", but put it on most books that use "house style" and yeah it'd be outright indefensible. When matched with a comedy character and a meme writer, it fits. Or at least becomes tolerable.
That said I get that it's objectively lacking and love the /co/C it generates.
