They got their ass beat by the 90's Guardians of the Galaxy, one of them joined the Guardians, and the team was never used again

You have to realize that the Justice League as a franchise was failing in the early 80's. Following the DC Implosion in 77/78, DC was spiraling down a path of less and less market shares and sales because readers and reviewers thought they were silly, outdated and old-fashioned. The idea to have the brightest and best superheroes in the world in the JLA seemed like a relic of a bygone age in an era when the best-selling superteam book (and best-selling comic in general) was a book about a bunch of young, irreverent characters with ethnic diversity and attitude. All-New X-men was TEARING the superhero market up and DC felt they had to change to adapt. So they took a chance on letting Marv Wolfman and George Perez relaunch the long-failing Teen Titans franchise with a mostly new team of oddball, slightly freakish members, and they also let Gerry Conway do whatever he wanted with the JLA as long as it "shook up" the book and got a young cast in. So JL Detroit was in essence an attempt to make the JLA into the X-Men. You had young, inexperience unknowns mentored by an older character and taking on a legendary team name. And instead of the high-concept idea of having their base in a satellite in orbit, free access to interplanetary spacecraft and the like, the Detroit league were based right in Detroit, in a compound not unlike the X-mansion. And they had little money and resources.

It's just that while the New Teen Titans was a huge hit and pretty much pulled DC out of the slump, The JL Detroit never caught on and was quickly mothballed after only a couple of years, which led to Legends and the Giffen/DeMatteis League. I think part of why the JLD failed so hard was that for most of their run they had the quite blocky and stiff art of Luke McDonell. Compared to the amazing Perez art in NTT or the Cockrum/Byrne/Paul Smith art in X-Men, there was never any visual appeal to the JLD. And Conway, while a solid writer, never really seemed to click

It's doubly surprising when you consider he was a victim of Scourge of the Underworld.

They resurrected virtually all of Scourge's victims for that one Punisher story arc. Guys like Basilisk, Lascivious, Hijacker and Mirage (maybe) are all still alive and well from that. But Melter was overlooked entirely.

And Mirage was in Superior Foes. Yeah, Fred pushed him off a roof, but Mirage has a habit now of being a loser who inexplicably comes back. I bet he'll show up again when you least expect it, to get "killed" again...and again...and again
