Pete's high school supporting cast is great, but aside from Betty, who isn't an option because it's too early to give him a girlfriend, I wouldn't really call any of them his friends. Liz gets a bit friendly with him when she isn't mad or jealous, but she shouldn't start that way. Same with Flash not being friendly until growing up, and you can include Harry and Gwen in that too even though they shouldn't meet him until after high school. Movies don't really do internal monologues, so he needs a friend. Enter Ned, who they wouldn't likely use in a significant role otherwise, dressed up as Aracnig Kid's friend.

Look, I'm halfway in that camp myself. Would I and a lot of others preferred an adult Peter? Absolutely.

But I can't speak for anyone else; all I know is that I've been spoiled by the funny, yet still mature and utterly heroic high school-aged Peter and the well-rounded, engaging, and diverse supported cast that we saw in the Spectacular Spider-Man animated series. And now that Marvel's golden boy has...well, finally ~come home~ (goddamn, is that ever a stupid title), I suppose a lot of us were expecting something a little more along those lines rather than the quirky indie teen comedy vibe it was confirmed that they were going after. A Spider-Man that wasn't all "golly gee, Mr. Stark!" or called Star Wars a really old movie.

And I get it, I do. Even as a massive webhead fan, I was getting tired of seeing him on the big screen. Changes needed to be made and certain elements freshened up in order to spare him from becoming Dead Horse-Man. But this just seems a little too far off book and in all honestly, absolutely reeks of market testing and mountains of studio notes from out of touch Sony execs (who, as per their deal with Marvel, still retained a ton of creative input on the final product) in order to cash in on the teenaged/millennial demographic.

Maybe I'm picky about my all-time favorite superhero after being burned so many times. Maybe I'm just getting old.

It's not a SUPERHERO origin story, but it is very clearly a CHARACTER Origin story.

It doesn't have the spider bite or Ben dying, but it'll still have a turning point and a Call To Arms.

Ultimately, it will be a story about Spiderman discovering his place in the universe. The only REAL difference is that this universe happens to already have superheroes in it.

Does it bother anyone else how Peter is so eager to prove himself worthy to Tony as a Avenger? Clearly they're modeling him after his Ultimate rendition, but Ultimate Pete wasn't so concerned with proving himself to other superheroes (partly because most of them are assholes) as he was doing the right with his powers.

The trailer made me feel like most of the movie will be spent having Pete run around saving people to get Tony to acknowledge him before he actually does it because its the right thing near the end and it just rubs me the wrong way.
