I think what makes me hate mabel a lot is the fact that her character is a self insert who despite constantly acting selfish she's always "correct" in universe and dipper is constantly forced to take Ls.

If the shows characters (aside from cypher I believe) acknowledge the fact that mabel was always asking people (dipper especially) to sacrifice shit for her extremely superficial and selfish wants while never doing shit in return for anyone, she would have been way more tolerable of a character.

Modecai from regular show annoys me in the same sort of way to a lesser degree. It feels like he can act like a dickwad sometimes and get away with it because he's a self insert like mabel. But unlike her modecai is a mostly redeemable person who can occasionally get self insert syndrome while mabel basically controls with universe.

Part of the problem I think also stems from there being two common plots in season 1 were:

But then after that Dipper and Mabel's dynamic went back to feeling unevenly handed again (particularly around TLB when we're supposed to feel bad for Mabel being called a bad person after a montage where only half the "good deeds" she did were actually good deeds) and then just kinda boiled over by Weirdmaggedon when the rift and Mabel ignoring her friends and loved ones potentially dying in favor of a literal bubble were kinda left to sit there as this giant elephant in the room.

I wouldn't even say I necessarily "hate" Mabel either, but it's frustrating as fuck to notice that the writers refused to let her have a character arc.

Greg was an asshole, no doubt, but we was a LOVABLE asshole. He did a bunch of shitty things, but the fact he did these things and the ignorance he displays by blaming others is pretty freaking hilarious. It's a part of his character.

And when push comes to shove, he actually shows that he DOES care about his family and friends when it comes to serious matters rather than slice of life shenanigans. He admits at the end of Rodrick Rules that no matter how much he loathes him, Rodrick IS his brother and he loves him. And he took the blame for the cheese touch because he knew no one would EVER interact with Rowley after that, going as far as to (albeit clearly in vain) omit the fact he ate it in his own personal journal. So while he can be a dick, he's shown he really DOES love these people and knows what to do when the situation is actually dire.


Mabel on the other hand, gave something that wasn't hers and she KNEW was PROBABLY important to some dude her only experience with was attempting to enact revenge on her because she was butthurt that summer was ending.

Even worse, she thought she made the fucking RIGHT decision and swallowed a blue pill bigger than the pacific to stay in a little dream world, perfectly content to cause the end of the world and even replace her own brother with a "cool" version.


tl;dr: They're both assholes, but at least Greg was in a funny and relatable way and stopped being a huge cunt when the situation was actually serious. Mabel was mostly a count IN serious situations.

Gregs dickishness results from his home life and his whole family being a whole circus of different kinds of ass hats. His mother means well but she insists on treating her children like toddlers and is incredibly obstinate, his dad wants nothing more then to fuck off and do his own thing at the best of times, his older brother is a straight up bully, and his younger brother is a conniving manipulator who is spoiled beyond all belief. I couldn't finish Punpun. I couldn't get past further than when he sees Aiko again and he pledges that he'll be with her in two years or he'll kill himself. Too much about the comic reminds me of the worst parts of my life. I didn't want to remember.

Never read Punpun have read some Watamote, from what I have researched about Punpun it honestly sounds a million times worse, Watamote is just cringe you can relate to and Tomoko does make friends later on in the manga but it sounds like Punpun is the main character suffering and failing throughout life with his fucked up family and friends.

I don't know why, but I legitimately like the Diary of the Wimpy Kid books even though they're clearly for kids. I just find them funny and real. Greg is a little shit, but he doesn't get away with the shit he pulls and often suffers for his shit attitude. Rowley is a true innocent.
