I actually think it's an alright show with some (!) decently written characters and story. The thing I hate about it is Steven, his dad and any humans. The important part of Pearl's devotion to Rose isn't that its technically gay, its that its unrequited.

The important part of Ruby and Saphire's relationship isn't that its technically gay, but that its strong but almost unhealthily codependent. They have literally lost sight of their individual identities and instead identify as a single unit, which is either romantic or worrying depending on your perspective.

Jasper/Lapis and Lars/Sadie both show different kinds of unhealthy relationships. Sadie can't ever really bury her feelings for Lars despite Lars being totally undeserving of her affection, and and Jasper wanted to cling to the first real emotional attachment she had even though it was a terrible relationship built on mutual abuse. She cared more about how the relationship made her feel than on the wants and needs of the other person involved.

And so on and so forth.

Yes, technically anything involving the gems is kinda gay. But anyone who focuses on that is missing the forest for the trees.

This. Honestly, there are *no* perfect relationships in the show. Not even Garnet. Even Greg and Rose had problems they had to work through; and Vidalia is on her second husband (or at least lover) after what could not possibly have been a long lasting happy situation with Marty. Also Fuck Marty. And while Yellowtail seems like a perfectly nice gentleman, he's largely absent providing for his family. Connie's parents exist mostly to care about her, so we don't see their romantic side; same with Lars' parents, (though the latter seem to moreso openly care for each other or at least rely on each other to deal with their son.) As far as I know, Sadie's father isn't in the show so we have nothing to go by regarding her mother's romantic relationships.

That leaves the kids: Steven and Connie have been having a better puppy love/first crush relationship to work through... but other than Sadie and Lars are the ONLY teen/kid couple around ever since Ronaldo's girlfriend dumped his poor ass over a misunderstanding.

Lars and Sadie aren't crushing on each other like some story book romance or even a first crush situation like Steven/Connie. Both of them have clear issues expressing themselves as a general thing compared to the other teens (who seem more concerned with just having fun than pursuing romantic interests) and Steven's upbringing has been a huge boon to his relationships, even though Connie's had to repress alot of hers before meeting him.

They don't know how to express themselves very well (Lars especially since he's got his head up his ass trying to be a cool guy) and so they make mistakes. They're flawed. But so is everyone else in the show and that's part of the point; people are flawed. The world isn't beautiful, therefore it is.
