Why?

Because it had "Let it Go"

>>
Every mexican schoolgirl has a frozen backpack.
Fuck the "budget", tickets are the lowest thing to sell with a product.
>>
>>88178973
Tangled was developed first in 2D then totally scrapped and re-made in 3D. Those years of production cost. Same reason why Superman Returns' budget is what it is.

>>88178973

Better songs, better story, better cg animation tech.

>"Let it Go", a pop song that appealed to the Glee/Wicked crowd

>Female character that did actionny stuff/had lore, and wasn't about romance. Kind of a Western "Magical Girl Anime"

>Premiered in the US during a really cold/snowy/icy winter where outdoory activities were not an option, but one could putter down to the local suburban mall/cineplex and veg out in front of a screen.
>>
>>88179390

Isn't it also the first Disney movie with actual pop-out 3-D? I wasn't in theaters to see Meet the Robinsons, Bolt, or Chicken Little so I'm not sure if they were in 3-D or not.
>>
>>88179013
Yeah i Can imagine All those mexicans girls affording Disney's official licensed products
>>

Up iirc
>>
>>88181351
i went to see meet the robinsons in 3d. they had some intro part where the robot told you to put on the 3d glasses and there was pop out there, but the rest of the film looked rather flat. then again, tangled also looked flat so maybe the cinemas in my area are shit. i watched tangled on blu ray 3d though and it's fantastic with great pop out and depth
>>
It had the best female singer on Broadway/overall sing a song or two for it. It's like how other Universal flicks don't do as well as Jurassic Park because they went to the trouble of getting cloned dinosaurs instead of using 3D animation

It wasn't ever 2D. But originally they wanted the CG to look like an oil painting. They never could get the tech to work properly though. It did go into full production and then was pushed back into pre-production for a total re-write after they (thankfully) abandoned the original story idea.

Better movie.
>>
>>88179390

Yeah, Superman returns made more money than Batman begins at the Box Office but because it cost so much it never got a sequel. If Returns had been cheaper I imagine a Snyderless DCEU would have been made years ago
>>
>>88178973
People thought Tangled had mediocre songs, and the pre-production title change from Rapunzel to Tangled turned some people away.

Frozen had Idina Menzel. That song was blasted from every radio and child for months.

Luckily, both films were considered successful and no careers were destroyed.
>>
>>88178973
Nigga do you know how hard animating hair is?
>>
>why
Let it Go for the revenue and snow is ridiculously fucking easier to animate than a forest filled with hair

Fuck, hair's so hard to animate they notoriously fucked up animating hair in Frozen.
>>
>>88184866
Rapunzel had 3 sets of animators working just on her hair. Head hair was animated with the character, then there was the hair sock and the end which both had separate teams of animators.
>>
A lot of Tangled's budget was R&D as Disney was still in the process of bolstering their CGI department trying to make it not suck.

Tangled came off the coat-tails of Princess and the Frog, which wasn't widely appreciated. People weren't hyped going into Tangled, it didn't make as much.

Conversely, Frozen came off the coat-tails of Tangled, which had won over a lot of lost Disney fans, which helped kickstart the hype train. Then Let It Go became a thing and once something becomes genuinely mainstream popular its hard for it to NOT barrel out of control, and Disney has some of the best marketing teams on the planet to boot.
>>
>>88185419
Not to mention the first trailer for Tangled looked like a blood-drenched ballsack.

Dunno. But I somehow missed Tangled in the theatres. Never heard of it until I was lent the DVD in 2013. I was like how the hell did I miss this gem!
>>
>>88179390
Frozen went through for more reboots in production than Tangled did and a ton of Frozen's cost was developing the CG technology they used in the film

>>88178973
Tangled didn't make good money because it lacked anything great. The soundtrack is weak, the singing is weaker (seriously, Mandy Moore's voice is so fucking bland and unemotional), and the story is a fairly boring skeleton for the musical numbers to hang off of. It feels far more like a Dreamworks movie than a Disney one.

Frozen's story admittedly wasn't that much better, but the soundtrack was the best Disney has put out in recent memory, and it had a comic relief character that people actually liked.
>>
For the budget I can explain this. Disney uses their 3D studio to fund 3D animation development. Brave and Tangled were them mastering hair effects, which can be VERY difficult to animate properly but they have that shit down now, and at a profit gain. Zootopia was to extend that hair-tech to fur, which is more complicated and couldn't be attainable until more recent, efficient rendering farms were created.

Frozen was about ice animation, but compared to hair/fur ice is easy as fuck. They didn't have to re-invent the animated wheel like they did with their other movies.
>>
>>88178973
It came out the right time with the right message. Girls ate up that shit.

>>
>>88188891
Oh dear.
>>
>>88178973

Because le strong feminist message meme.

Le evil woman is actually good and misunderstood and le good man is actually evil and bad.

If anyone actually thinks Frozen is a better movie than tangled, then odds are they loved wicked and maleficent. And if that is the case, then you know youre dealing with a man-hater who hates fun and cute.
>>
>>88189055
Loved Frozen, hated Maleficent. Can't stand modern "feminism". Your argument is invalid.
>>
>>88178973
Because Tangled was boring and badly paced and advertised like Shrek: Barbie Edition in TV ads.
>>
>>88189055

I loved Tangled but Frozen had better music, story and arguably characters. At this point anybody hating Frozen is doing so out of backlash
>>
>>88181284
It was also one of the coldest, longest winters in a long time. The stars were aligned for this movie to do well.
>>
>>88188897

You can just ignore the incest
>>
Frozen had a budget of 150 million?

Holy shit, they had some insane godlike snow physics though. I imagined it was much higher.
>>
>>88189391
The only people who unironically hate Frozen are Tangled fans who envy Frozen taking their spot as three fan favorite modern princess movie. And now we have Moana stealing even more of Tangled's limelight.

Personally I always hated Tangled and hated how Tangled fans freaked out if you didn't suck that movie's dick and think Rapunzel was the greatest female character of all time. That movie was so fucking mediocre and seeing its mediocrity praised constantly gave me a hateboner for it.
>>
>>88189430
They'll make some new female come along who is actually shippable with Elsa. Maybe she'll have fire powers.
>>
WTF is happen in this thread.

We must hate Frozen in here.

Frozen is shit !! SHIT !!!!!
>>
>>88189492

>>
I hated both after being made to watch them more than three times in a row.

>frozen:

>tangled:
Retarded girl who hates mother a lot 'cause muh liberties and evil bitch oppressing me it's really relatable, be free girls! Get out and do whatever!

At least i didn't want to strangle people while watching tangled.
>>
>>88189523
>>88189561
Listen I hate Tangled so fucking much, Frozen wasn't perfect either but it was at least entertaining and made me feel something other than "dead inside". Moana was also fun to see in 3D.
>>
>>88189634

You sound like you're one more trigger away from shooting up a school anon. Relax and chill they're Disney movies and there's literally nothing wrong with anything you're criticizing them for.
>>
>>88178973
Japan. They were obsessed with Frozen for a while there.
>>
>>88178973
A thing Disney does is they develop entirely new technology for each of their films. Tangled's budget was so high because they fucking invented the hair rendering tech during production... rendering technology that every other company now licenses to be comparable with Disney. On Frozen they created powder physics (the snow) and for zootopia they created artificial air current physics. Every movie is more advanced than the prior film.
>>
>>88181284
It released right before the Thanksgiving break for colleges, that meant all the girls went to it with their local friends, and then went back to school where they told all their school friends, and then saw it again.
I talked with one girl that said she saw it 6 times in the theater. Crazy.
>>
>>88184624
Enchanted did something similar in reverse.
>>
>>88178973

At the time Tangled came out, Pixar was still at the top of the 3D heap. It had to convince audiences to give their 3D offerings another chance after the horrendous Chicken Little and so-so Bolt.

Tangled was essentially a very long R&D project, so despite it's huge budget, it's money well spent. The technology and experience and assets they created formed the foundation of all of their later 3D films. Rapunzel is the template for their current princess design/house style.
>>
Frozen was on theatres for like forever
>>
>>88178973
Because Disney released it during the worst/longest winter in years.
It was the single best timing of any movie ever made.
>>

>>
>>88193340
Have you really not heard about the sequel? They confirmed it like in early 2015. Disney has already sent a team of writer-directors Lee & Buck, producer Del Vecho, art director (I forgot his name) and some other dude to Norway and Finland to learn more about the sami and their culture incl. traditional dress, music, reindeerherding etc, Kristen Bell who voices Anna had said that they were close to starting to record march this year, though it apparently got postponed and they're still "finishing" the script.

But yeah, it's definitely 100% confirmed, underway and coming.
>>
>>88193561

yeah i heard the rumours.
and it's not making me happy.
but "muh billions"
>>
>>88193606
It's not rumours, it's actually officially confirmed over a year and a half ago.

And yes, obviously a movie that made 1.25 or whatever bn in the box office and then raked in nearly 6 bn in merchandising money will get a sequel. Disney would be crazy not to try to milk that cash cow a bit further. Frozen is simply too popular for Disney to you know

And absolutely garbage everything else. Look at this picture- the wall Elsa is standing on is clearly a flat rectangle with a slightly bevelled rectangle on top, both of them layered with a simple texture that isn't even normal mapped or anything. The castle in the background is the same deal and looks fucking terrible, and there are a lot of clones in the crowd walking past. The cliffs look straight out of a PS3 game.

>>
>>88194568

>>
>>88194131
>>88194293
It's not about it aging, it's the animation being utter unfinished shit even when it came out because of how insanely rushed the whole production was as a result of the never-ending rewrites and tweaks. They spent longer animating the 7-minute FF sequel short than they did the 90-min movie proper.

Some scenes look great, as they were probably done before the last rewrites, but many look like shit, like "For the First Time in Forever", which according to the songwriters was written and composed in June 2013, merely 5 months before the movie's release date.

They didn't have the time to do it properly.

>>
>>88196331
I for one thought they didn't work, as already during LIAOD Hans was making funny faces, which became really, really obvious during the engagement argument scene. But then again, I've watched a lot of period romance dramas where "12 older brothers" spells "fucking desperate to marry into money whatever it takes cause I ain't inheriting shit", so I was paying attention to him.

I thought Anna would develop an attraction to Kristoff, Hans and Elsa would be attracted to each other, and everyone would feel a bit guilty about their forbidden feelings before it'd all be sorted out into Kristanna-Helsa endgame.

Wasn't expecting the douche-ass bond villain monologue twist though.
>>
>>88197966
Disney seems to think that a girl showing interest in more than one man must mean she is bad and a slut.

I still think they should have had Hans reveal that he doesn't love her but likes her as a person and in order to save Anna, he confronts Elsa and thinks he has to kill her to stop it.
>>
>>88190568
It seems to have made $250,000,000. That's a lot, but if you subtracted it you'd still be left with a bit over a billion dollars.
>>
>>88198056
Yeah, I feel that Hans was originally planned to have been a more ambiguous character, but in the end ditching him for Kristoff made Anna seem like a slut, so they turbocharged Hans with evil gloating to make Kristoff the obviously right and superior choice via contrast
>>
>>88198454
Anna still ended up a slut, though. She was too horny to function.

See that, Disney? The pairing sells
>>
>>88199088
Well, I'm not entirely sure how well the coronation variation sold. I presume it sold out, but I remember hearing it did not sell terribly quick. Then again, it was a D23 exclusive & there was a massive hours-long line just to get into the gift shop. I also heard that D23 spaced out restocking the doll set over the course of the convention.

Some people argue that the Hans/Elsa set only sold well because of Elsa, which is likely true, but that's no excuse to why it sold so well in comparison to the Kristoff/Anna set.
>>
>>88197736
*cough* Bullshit. Maybe in your area. We had all the dolls for months at Target.ca. I was buying them and putting them on eBay.

Are you on glue? Read it again.
We had tons of them, ergo LOW DEMAND in MY region. (Capitalized to assist comprehension by your puny brain). I have serious doubts my region was the only one to experience that.

Goddamn rights I was profiting. When I read about the crazy demand for Frozen dolls I started buying and reselling them. BTW, I was never able to sell a Hans doll. Elsa..??? Christ yeah... almost couldn't keep up.

You said "Bullshit" as though to imply that the dolls weren't selling, which, given your tone, sounded like you were critical or disbelieving that there was a demand for the dolls.
I did say "Your area was an outlier," since obviously you were successfully making money off them, IE there was a big market.

It wasn't some illogical path I took to draw those conclusions. If you weren't implying that there was no market for the dolls and that only "there was no market in your area," then "bullshit," was not an appropriate term to use.

Also, you're getting disproportionately mad over this.

If we're looking for a more unbiased review of popularity, let's look at eBay.

Prices for Hans/Elsa are floating around $150 for the non-D23 set.

Prices for the Kristoff/Anna float around $100-$110, with some going lower than that.

Both sets retailed about $100 & are the same edition size.

Whoops, the original retail price I cited is incorrect.

Both sets retailed at $130, so Kristoff/Anna dolls tend to see a loss of $20, while Hans/Elsa can expect profit.

Which is very interesting since Rapunzel was much stronger and did more to control her own destiny than either Anna or Elsa.

Those things have nothing to do with how popular a movie will be (see Ghostbusters). Frozen was successful simply because it had a big Defying Gravity musical number.
>>
>>88201970
All of Elsa in general, really. The belting independence anthem, the soft Aryan genetics, magical ice powers that can create anything of her imagination, the above-all authority as queen, & the gorgeous ice blue gown.
