As near as I can tell, this is the first time he was portrayed as one of THOSE Christians. Yeah, he's always been a teetotaler and a goody-two-shoes but he's never been one to condemn someone or something, it just wasn't for him. That moment was a funny gag, and topical at the time, so they probably got a lot of feedback on it, so they just doubled down.

Maybe I'm off base, but I'd put money on that being the tipping point.

I think Flanders gets Flanderised multiple times.

In the earliest seasons he is barely shown as religious. But he slowly becomes more religious until it takes over his character.
Good example episodes of this would be "In Marge We Trust" in Season 8 where he is calling Lovejoy all the time.
Then he gets turned into a parody of fundamentalist christians somewhere in the zombie seasons and gets used as a strawman for the show to score liberal brownie points.

I always hated the cat deaths in this episode because they make no goddamn sense.

I actually found it pretty funny in a dark way that Lisa had 4 cats die on her, 3 of them in sequence, but getting an identical cat in the end is a pretty cheap move.

It's just kind of fucked up for a little girl to go through and I guess that's the humor for me.

No cat will drown in a fish tank in a matter of seconds like that. Hell, most would probably shoot out of it like a rocket the second they hit the water. You'd have a very wet, very angry, but still living cat.

I'm curious: why do people include season 10 in the classic era? Most of the episodes feel pretty different from the classics, and stylistically close to the stuff that came after.

Is it because of a few episodes here and there that feel classic-ish (like Mayored to the mob, Lisa Gets an A, Wizard of evergreen terrace, and Wild barts can't be broken)?

Some people just like round numbers, some people just go along with what a lot of others say, some people aren't clear whether they mean "the episodes in this range are generally great" or "this is all the Simpsons I can tolerate before it gets bad" when they say golden/classic era.

It's often a dumb term to use because there's not a single definition or range.

Although Season 9 and 10 and even 11 have some good episodes here and there, Season 8 was the last fully consistent season of great episodes back to back. Not to say the 9-11 is shit tho. They're mostly just OK.
