It starts in 15 minutes, is anyone else watching it?Anyone got a stream link?
I will watch it until we have to go out, but I expect nonstop threads for the next bunch of days, /co/.
Anyone got a stream?

It's so weird going back and seeing early Simpsons and seeing how much has changed.
>Martin was Bart's antagonist

Huh, there wasn't a real conflict, just homer telling a story.
I like that.
Huh, I never realized that Homer said "holy moly" so much in the earlier seasons.
I caught several of the episodes from the first season while at my cousins. I've forgotten just how much of a stick in the mud Marge used to be. Which hilariously contrasted to one of the network bumps during the commercials where Maggie is entranced by the TV. Bart and Lisa took on the role of being concerned that this isn't good for her, but Marge was acting rather negligent saying "She likes it!" even after Maggie hissed like a feral cat when they changed the channel.

These kinder, gentler Itchy and Scratchy episodes are probably also a parody of the later Tom and Jerry cartoons where they weren't allowed to show violence and the two became buddies and Jerry started wearing a tie for some reason.
I don't think those have even been shown since the '70s; Boomerang and Cartoon Network are content to show the Deitch and Filmation shorts but not the kinder, gentler Tom and Jerry.

It will probably pick up when we get into the good/great seasons.
Remember when Barney was an actual character?
Also, plowing Marge would be a pretty good way to go.
So, if you were actually poisoned, you'd be in serious pain, right?
>>87924895
Depends on the poison.
>>87924895
Depends on the specific poison, I think fugu just makes you go catatonically numb all over if I remember correctly.
Are you living your life to the fullest /co/?

Depends on your definition of poison. Some neurotoxins and paralytics just make you numb.

Is NoHomers one of the worst, most intolerable forums on the Internet?
They nitpick every microscopic crumb of the show, or exaggerate how terrible seasons 11-12 are (even though they're really not that bad)
>>87925623
I wouldn't say that. It's one of the best episodes, definitely Top 10 and you could easily make a case for calling it THE best, but the quality in seasons 1 to 3 isn't as consistently high as that around 4-8.

I remember my sister used to steal cable.
We /asp/ now
How did one "steal cable" back in those days?
>>87925728

>>87925749

>>87925102
Isnt Barney's voice is harder for his voice actor do now a days ?
>>87925749
Just get some shady 3rd party cable guy to install it for you
>>87925732
I'll agree with that. It's why the first 10 seasons of the Simpsons are an interesting watch, and why even the seasons after are interesting to analyse. The show basically morphs into a new show with the same characters every 5 seasons or so.
>>87925749
Basically what they showed here; paying off the cable guy to hook you up.
If you had satellite, you just bought the card.
I never got Lisa in this episode. Always thought she'd be for stealing cable because that means lower-class families could access all forms of visual entertainment without having to pay a fortune every month, while sticking it to corporations for daring to put a paywall in the way of people and their programming. I know Lisa wasn't a bleeding-heart liberal yet, but it's just weird seeing her act so pro-authority here.
Man watching these early seasons it's pretty obvious Lisa was always kinda preachy
>>87925749
Pre digital you just needed to connect your house to the main cable line without telling the cable company.
>>87925749
My buddy stole cable back when I was in grade school
They just wired a coax cable to the pole outside. Im guessing they just used a splitter or something on the wires up there.
The signal was pretty weak actually
>>87925803
This isn't a political thing, she's jut afraid of going to Hell.
>>87925803
Marge is also out of character here.
The Bird is getting her own show?
>>87925803
>>87925806
I understood and enjoyed having Lisa as the moral compass in early seasons. it's a shame how the writers today have as a Californian's mouthpiece.
>>87925803
It's really simple.
Is someone having fun?
If yes, Lisa is against that shit.
>>87925803
this seems like something a little girl would actually freak out over
even though its just stealing cable
a little kid would freak out over the thought if when they're told they should never steal
but yeah lisa is overly judgmental
Was that a sexy granny mag in the background?
Fucking Lisa.
>Burns doesnt have cable, much less steal it on his own
>>87925807
To steal digital cable you just get someone to give you some certified equipment that hasn't been flagged yet.
This episode made my sister think having cable was wrong and she complained until we got rid of it.
Is Mr.Burns voiced by Shearer yet?
>>87925866
It pales in comparison to Gigantic Asses.
>Stardust Memories
>>87925794
>The show basically morphs into a new show with the same characters every 5 seasons or so.
For the first 10 seasons it was pretty much every 2 seasons because of how long each showrunning term lasted.
But then Scully went another 2 seasons and then Jean happened. Would be interesting to see how the quality would have fluctuated if the 2-season thing lasted and the show stayed on as long as it has, though it really never should have lasted anywhere close to this long at all.
>>87925932
Pretty sure he always has been. In that, even this marathon uses the Shearer versions of episodes instead of Latta.

>>87925997
Interesting how Groening and Brooks were only the showrunners in the first 2 seasons. Considering how they're far more grounded and almost serious compared to the seasons after, I always wondered what the show would have been like if Groening had never stopped being showrunner. Would it have ended after a few more seasons? Would it be as popular as it became?
Hell, how has the Simpsons managed to keep going so long anyway?
>>87926077
Oh, look who grew a spine.
Go back to your gutter and leave the posting to the men.
>>87925997
Confused by how long the Jean era's been running. Al Jean can't possibly be having fun working on the same show for about 15 years. Unless they can't find someone to replace him, but then it leads to the question of how hard could it be to find some weird guy to showrun The Simpsons. That's like not being able to find a director for a Star Wars movie.
>Smithers, the Cheetos
>last you'll hear of me
>keeps telling everyone
>it wasn't all this other stuff the homer stole before that set lisa off, it was fucking cable
>>87926101
>Hell, how has the Simpsons managed to keep going so long anyway?
It still gets good ratings and makes Fox millions in merchandising.
>>87926115
Fuck off.
this episode just feels like it's shilling for cable companies
>>87926146
>Good ratings
The last season only got an average of 4 million viewers and its on network tv.
Compared to season 2 when it got 25 million viewers
>>87926146
>It still gets good ratings
But how.
>>87926162
I still feel like the most egregious example was Bart of all people ranting to Comic Book Guy about how viewers owe the creators of shows.
This is weird considering the future episode where Homer steals movies and shows them to the neighborhood.
>>87926146
>Fuck off.
What is this world coming to?
>>87926180
>>87926184
Well, its still usually the highest rated show on Fox Sundays, at least.
>>87926180
Ratings of all network shows are down. 4 million today for a full season show of 20+ episodes and not partial season shows like reality shows is considered good enough.
I use to tell my brothers shorter opening met longer episodes.
Is this just bullshit I made up or true?
>>87926184
Inertia, basically.
>>87926101
It technically could have ended after the first 4 seasons because by then most of the original writing team had left, and Sam Simon, who was really instrumental in creating the show in some ways, stopped being involved as well. Though technically the first 2 seasons were the most popular in terms of the number of viewers each episode got. It's only after that have been so many seasons that it's easy to ignore how influential those first episodes were.
I think it's lasted so long because it still makes money, or at least Simpsons merchandise still does. Apparently it's still one of the most profitable media franchises.
>>87926138
Think he just sees it as easy money for little work. Like he just wants to run it into the ground until it gets canceled or beats another arbitrary record, whichever comes first.
I can't imagine he seriously gives a damn about the quality; possibly in the first few seasons after he returned to the show but definitely not within the last decade.
that elephant sounds familiar
>>87926261
It's true.
They'd also use longer openings to pad out shorter episodes.
>>87926261
It's partially true.
Some of the openings in the earlier episodes were recycled for certain episodes just for that.
>>87926261
True. The credits and longer couch gags are used to adjust for longer or shorter episodes.
BUT THE SIGN SAID ALL YOU CAN EAT
>It's a Selma episode
>>87926261
Yes, and when the golden age episodes use the couch gag where the Simpsons dance with all the circus performers, it means the episode itself ran really short.

I guess the shock of a primetime cartoon with SWEARING and SEX. There were definitely other shows that went further than that around the same time or before, but not really cartoon sitcoms (Flintstones would be comparatively tame by then).
But even the first Christmas episode was insanely popular, as were the Ullman shorts though not to that extent. Remember hearing that someone involved with Simpsons wore something with the characters on it in public in December '89, after the Christmas special, and immediately got a ton of attention from random people.
Maybe just a right place, right time situation.

You forget back then that there were less distractions. You didn't really have much of a functional internet or instant gratification. So you tended to follow whatever was on TV. This was a hit with kids, which got parents watching, and soon everyone was.
Simpsons is the modern day Flintstones really.

Guys, what're the weirdest old Simpsons episodes to watch nowadays? Stuff like Homer the Heretic where you could show it to kids and they'd go "I don't get it. What's so bad about not going to church?"
>>87926726
Homer's Night Out because of the photo being relatively tame and it spreading across town and shocking everyone.
>Agnes is nowhere in the episode
>its just badass Skinner
>>87926726
It's not even that old or good, but The Computer Wore Menace Shoes just leans on the early internet angle really well. The internet a lot of kids are used to is really, for lack of a better word, gentrified and flashy. They likely don't have experience of bizarre sites like Homers.
Now that I learned the difference between Patty and Selma, this is one of my top 10 episodes.
Prof Skinner was amazingly written and gave Patty much needed depth.
>>87926720
It's the perfect time, since we're just starting S3.
>>87926774
I think it has some things that still ring true to modern internet culture though, like Homer releasing classified information to the public like Wikileaks. Also, did anyone else when they watched that episode as a kid actually recognize The Prisoner references or were they like me and just thought the episode took a really weird turn?
MCBAIN!
>>87926726
First one that comes to mind is Oh Brother. The audience has to know that Detroit was once the center of automobile manufacturing and also Homer's car ruins the company despite ugly convenience-mobiles are exactly what people buy now. You're hard pressed to find a car post 2010 that doesn't have a computer that looks like the Enterprise controls.
Also Blowfish begins with the strange 90s fascination with sushi. Look how weird Japan is, they eat raw fish eew gross!
>>87926726
Id say just that they talk about having to sacrifice and save to get the things they want. Now every pay check to pay check fag has the latest iPhone or video game system bought by credit or mom and dad. I almost forgot people used to save money and not live out of there means.

It was the late 80s, cable was still a luxury, but Fox was a Network and thus widely available, and Simpsons was functionally a pisstake on the family sitcom that had been dominating everything since the dawn of the Cosby Show.
