That said, they aren't going to make their 'superman' character, who they are building up to lead the future Avengers, and even bears the Marvel name as part of her identity, a broken jaded, cynical, alcoholic wreck of a human being who breaks everything good she touches and smiles as she suffocates bad guys in space.

The Captain Marvel/Carol we get in the MCU will be a much different character, or have her negative qualities massively toned down. I mean, even Captain America is a bit of a prick in the comics, and he's the sweetest guy you could ever meet in the MCU.

Having a bunch of different writers interpret a character throughout many decades will do that especially since different writers will do different things with said characters.

In Cap's case he has gone through a lot of writers, like Brubaker makes him into a dick and weary guy who will not shy away frim playing dirty and is willing to kill someone like Red Skull and Zemo without a second's thought while Gruenwald made him into this straight laced by the book holier than thou guy who would never take a life ever and gets angry when others do.

Waid writes him like your standard Cap but he also makes him into a snarky cranky old man who is tired of everyone's shit, he's not necessarily mean to people but he gets irritated pretty easily.

My favorite versions of Cap is when he was written by Roger Stern and DeMatteis versions, because both of them wrote him as this emphatic guy who will always resort to talking before fighting. Like he defeats a Native American champion of an angry Earth Spirit spirit by hugging him and later on said character helps Steve when Steve is close to death. There's also a story with Cap trying to speak at a school and a kid comes in with a gun, Cap stops him but while everyone is angry at the kid and tries to haul him to jail all Cap cares about is finding out what made the kid act out that way. Also Steve's relationship with Arnie was good.

But yeah different writers will have different versions of a character, heck Warren Ellis even had Cap condone torture in Secret Avengers and then later went and admit he didn't know how to write him.

Also compare Cap when he was written by Joss Whedon vs Cap when he was written by Markus and McFeely and you'll find some differences.

The funny thing is, most probably Brie Larson saw and read the trainwreck version and loved it, thinking there was great potential in a messy superhero like Carol, and then she gets to play nothing even close to what she read. She hates it, but the masses love it because its Marvel at its plebbiest.
