The writer of the new book outright said in the interivew that she has a crush on Kate. The girlfriend is going to be either ignored, dumped or otherwise written out since nobody cares about superheroes and nameless civilians nobody's ever heard of. It has to be Name + Name. As we see, writers are not above retconning character sexuality just so they can have same sex romances whether it's just outright turning them gay despite all evidence to the contrary or having them "discover" they're really bisexual if they want to be slightly less in your face about it.
