Watch the shows G1, Beast Wars, Beast Machines (at your own risk), TF Animated, and TF Prime

Fuck all Japanese shit, and idk if you're lazy and just in need of something to get you into it right away, watch this movie, it's great whether you're familiar with the G1 timeline at all or not and from there you may check out other TF stuff

Can't recommend any comics because I don't read them
>>
>>87648764
>hey don't actually get into the media, just read what other people said about it

>>

I see it more as "read about it, see a few articles about shows and comics, and read/watch whatever interests you the most."

The wiki is just a gateway.

>>
>>87648818
this is pretty accurate

I like the marvel G1 comics, along with ROM and GI Joe they're probably the best licensed toy comics
>>
>>87650003
I figured Hasbro invented that themselves when they created Transformers.
>>
>>87648818

I'd also say watch Transformers Armada

it was kinda shit for like 75% of it but Sideways and Starscream made it worth it

fuck the two series set after it though they're pure asscancer
>>
>>87648737
Come back wednesday and look for the IDW Revolution thread or a TF thread and ask there.
>>
>>87648737

The main TV series, comics, and toys. Transformers is almost always different in each incarnation though so there is little cohesion or continuity in the series as a whole. Chances are you'll find something you like.

Devastation is its own super robot thing but more heavily based in the first generation 1 series.
>>
If you're a girl or gay, try Prime.
>>
In my experience, a lot of people only remember the first three episodes of the G1 series and then the '85 movie. No surprise, they're some of the highlights of the show. That laser axe that Optimus has in Devastation? Only shows up within that first three-parter.

If you actually want to get into the G1 cartoon, its pretty bland childrens show fare but the premise for episodes get so weird it can be entertaining. Season 2 is the best in that respect. And watch Beast Wars.
>>
>>87650165
Sounds like Batman Arkham-verse.

Fuck you despite your nice trips. Not everyone gives a fuck about IDW , stop trying to have a monopoly on all TF threads with your shitty generals
>>
Just watch TF Animated, Robots in Disguise 2001, and parts of G1 like the first season and movie. After that read the IDW G1 comics and watch Beast Wars.Somewhere in that maybe watch TFPrime, but honestly its so damn boring a lot of the time its almost not worth it for the good. If you want some more, different and not entirely great stuff, check out the Victory anime, the Cybertron anime, and Beast Machines. If you're interested in the historical signifigance of it, read the G1 comic, but focus more on the later Simon Furman stuff.
>>

Nah, there's plenty of other great stuff:
>Season 1 has legitimately great animation for the most part, even when it's a mediocre episode it has that "Toei sheen". The Dinobots' introductions are especially good old fashioned super robot violence, and The Ultimate Doom is an awesome multiparter with huge stakes and still, to my contrarian opinion, the single best Transformers "movie".

Season 2 is when the writers' room let just about anything go in order to fill out the episode order, but in a good way - most episodes are memorable in one way or another, you've just got to keep a sense of humor and accept that the sense of stakes season 1 had its peaks will never return - except for a mid-season multiparter "Megatron Master Plan", which is pretty goofy but still makes more sense than the Bay movie it and The Ultimate Doom inspired. The back half has lots of unique or otherwise significant stuff like the original "origin story of Optimus Prime", the first female Transformers and Alpha Trion's debut, the Key to Vector Sigma story which influences BM, TFA, and Prime and is the first story to actually make the creation of new TF life/product a big deal/plot point. And even the goofy one-off episodes are really memorable, like the one where Starscream and Soundwave open a nightclub, or where Astrotrain sets himself up as the god of a primitive planetoid and Jazz has to teach aliens about atheism, or the one where a British big game hunter stalks Optimus Prime.

Season 3 is actually legitimately good. I won't spoil anything from there, just know that the animation quality generally becomes even more of a toss-up - when it's Korea-bad, it's BAD, but the episodes done by the GOOD studio, it's Obari as fuck.
>>
>>87654023
Oh, one last thing I forgot - whatever you do, DON'T watch the Rhino DVD transfers of the show. They used a godawful patchwork of unfinished earlier prints and the aired animation, so the show actually had MORE animation/coloring errors than it already did, and on top of THAT they added extra sound FX to season 1 for no apparent reason. These are the rips that were on Netflix for the longest time, sadly. Look for the Shout factory releases if you can, there is a huge difference in quality, especially for season 1.

- Serpent O.R.
- Cobra-La and a cult of Unicron.

Damn, I never realized it when I was a kid since I figured Transformers was always an American thing, but yeah, all these shows were anime as fuck. Probably why I liked them; I'm sort of a sucker for a good transformation like that.

Also, anything bad about those shows is cancelled out by the Japanese OP for TF Animated. They got JAM PROJECT on that shit.

I watched TF Prime to give the franchise a chance, liked it, then watched Animated, bought + read the comics and hung out in the decent threads we've had since then. If something was way out of my way of knowing I consulted the wiki (even though I dislike its childishness). Now I've bookmarked several sites to find the toys I want at a not-to-steep price and shipping and feel my life leaving me. Devastation is also a really good and fun game, so you did good on that as well.

Beast Machines was underrated. Sure it could have been better, but it was still pretty good. Megatron was at his absolute best in Beast Machines, eclipsing his previous depiction in Beast Wars. His menace was palpable.

Lonely and desolate is how Cybertron should feel though. It's usually shown to be a dead world with giant robots fighting over resources that almost don't exist. That part was good.

Being essentially a single 80's-esque "love nature it's good" GI Joe-style PSA stretched over the entire course of the series was the only real thing wrong with it.

Oh I've already seen them but they're wayyy out of what I can justify to pay for a toy, even if I'd really like that Gewalt and Hanzo from DX9. But it's hard enough already to find the ones I want that will get shipped without the price getting doubled.

>Lonely and desolate is how Cybertron should feel though. It's usually shown to be a dead world with giant robots fighting over resources that almost don't exist. That part was good.
What I mean is, the main characters were literally the only beings on the entire planet. It was a gloomy ghost planet. The G1 version was at least inhabited and there was activity. G1 Cybertron was dying, not dead all ready.

Eh, the lonely and desolate gripe was just something personal for me, but I've seen others mention it before.

Not in the US I take it? Usually you can find free shipping on most stuff for the same prices if you poke around.

And honestly, a lot of the 3P stuff is worth the price tag. And given a lot of other /toy/ stuff is easily hitting the $90+ area these days thanks to Japan's yen value being completely fucked, it starts looking a lot more attractive. Especially when we're seeing shit like the official new MP Megs is going to cost MORE than the 3P options, which is a frightening thing.

>>87662246
>Eh, the lonely and desolate gripe was just something personal for me

Ah, thats fair. Just saying it does tend to be a theme in TF stuff.

Yeah, and it's just that I can't allow myself to spend that much money on toys, I'm not a collector, there was already enough shame involved buying Infinity figures. I fear what I'll do next year on "threat yourself" day, though.
>>
>>87662542

Yeah, not being in the US (or certain parts of asia) is basically a death knell for anyone trying to collect anything that isn't rich as a motherfucker.

Even Canada pays something like 2x the price base, before shipping. I shudder to think what it is in further away places.
