i've put off reading Usagi Yojimbo because I want to start from the beginning. finally got my hands on vol 1. can't wait to read it and, if it's to my liking, all the subsequent volumes. hope i'm in for one hell of a ride.
>>87490545
Aww shit, CHANGELINGS!
>>87490787
>Hey, I've heard this story before. What is it with wives and turning into demons in Japan?
Residual guilt at how poorly women were treated in the era.
Thanks for the storytime, OP. even if you did probably kill the other discussion thread.
>>87496874
Death is a feather.
>>87492317
Ishida's a better cop than most real cops.
>>87492379

Ahh shit, it's like Dressed to Kill.
>>87492358
Hey OP, dunno if you'll see this, but thanks for dumping these comics. I only ever read Usagi when I was a kid, and even then it was just copies from the local library. Reading this stuff takes me back.
>>87493894
Oh fuck, we Lone Wolf and Cub now.
>>87499686
Sakai gets a lot of mileage out of that reference.
>>87494100
I love it when he's totally pissed off.
Tomoe or Chizu
>>87489616
huh? So Zeni is actually a thing outside of Dragon Ball. You learn something new everyday.
>>87500635
Okay so for future reference, if you see something in dragon ball, it WASN'T INVENTED IN DRAGON BALL!
>>87501232
In my defense, I'm pretty entry level when it comes to basically anything Japanese. Zeni just always sounded like a parodical way of saying "money" but with a jap twist.
>>87500591
Chizu. But either is great.
>>87503002
I think it's Chinese
>>87494259
Thanks, YojimBro! Always a pleasure.
I wonder who started the horrifying monster gets a cute loli sidekick thing. I bet there's some Kurosawa reference Im not getting
And yes I know what Lone Wolf and Cub is
and good on Stan for making his LW&C a goat instead of the obvious choice.
>>87508760
That's for the pun, Lone Goat and Kid
>>87508782
Still better than making "Lone Wolf" and wolf. Put some thought into it. I appreciate that.
>>87510331
got something to add, chief?
>>87508663
It just might be it's own thing. Like Stan just looked at Jei and thought he'd be more compelling if he wasn't an edgelord 24/7, so he gave him a kid to take care of.
>>87508663
I heard that Keiko was going to be Jei's new vessel but but that Stan changed his mind because it was too dark. But that might just be a rumour.
I think Keiko is still plenty dark despite it, but their dynamic is pretty adorable.
>>87511295
Well from where Im reading, nowhe's a girlso that's a thing.
Shits getting spooky
>>87495938
Oh, you surely are. This shit is a trip.
>>87496440
I was thinking of Sasuke and his wife, but you're probably right that it was a common theme. Given how much research Stan does.
>>87496874
Sorry anon. I'm planning to storytime the new issues as they come out, so we can use those are regular discussion threads too.
>>87499669
Glad you enjoyed it.
>>87500451
I am so pissed I didn't get the chance to enter this (or an edited version) in the banner contest.
>>87511657
Auntie is a beautiful and brave woman, anon. Not spooky at all.
>>87491861
Shut up, Aku!
>>87492187
The last image could be a 4Chan Banner
Does anyone else think the series has an inappropiate title? Usagi barely does any bodyguard work and most of the time the people he protects die. Is it supossed to be ironic?
Really, why couldn't it be "Usagi the Ronin" or something?
>>87515092
>most of the time the people he protects die
That's not true, in many occasions Usagi has saved the life of people that was in problems
>>87515092
Usagi gets hired occaisonaly still. It's also more of an accurate description than anything else you could call him. Every decent warrior in this time period seems to be a samurai, as far as Stan shows it, and every other named samurai is a ronin in the comic. So neither of those are as descriptive as Yojimbo, bodyguard, since Usagi defends peoples lives (and gets paid a little) way more than he does anything else except walk from town to town. Yojimbo also stands out more than Usagi Ronin or Usagi Samurai. People reading the comic sometimes mistake Yojimbo for part of Usagis name
>>87515092
The book wears its references on its sleeve. I thinks Sakai just wanted to get "wandering samurai does good" across to his '80s audience.
Maybe if the book had come out after the anime/manga boom and the Deniro movie, he might have felt comfortable marketing on ronin. Also, he may have avoided the word to prevent confusion with Frank Miller's Ronin.
>>87516532
Talking about the times when he specifically bodyguards. Though to be fair, many also died after the job was done.
Niccccce have a bump
>>87519011
Yeah, Usagi is an unlucky bodyguard. He tries his best and people still drop like flies.
Japan was a rough place to live.
>>87515092
His job title is still Yojimbo. It's what he would put down on his W2 form
>>87521086
His job title should be one-man ninja genocide but oh well.
>>87521619
that doesn't give you as many tax breaks as you'd think
>>87522680
Well, it should. Ninja's are a menace. I think we should build a big wall to keep them all out.
>>87523259
that's just a waste of tax payer dollars man, ninja scale walls like their goddamn Spiderman. All you're doing is given them a work out and the last thing we need is stronger ninja
so how would you go about making a TV series.
>>87525603
Alright, but by what studio and who should have the honor to voice Usagi?
>>87525603
Would've been a perfect fit for Toonami back in the day, I guess it could go on adult swim, but Usagi exists in some weird space where it isn't quite violent enough for an adult cartoon, but not so absent of violence for a kid's cartoon.
Keep it a comic with some cameos in TMNT.
>>87490787
Huh, Gakis are much more ugly in other media.
>>87527443
Who are you comparing him to?
>>87527534
The SMT demons, for one, there's also the character Kusaregedo from Samurai Shodown.
the original legends make them seem more like ghouls.
>>87525603
22 minutes, episodic but with continuity 2 parters allowed. ABSOLUTELY avoid animation trends and stick to the comic's artstyle as much as possible. Key animators that are good in action choreography.
>>87527757
>ABSOLUTELY avoid animation trends
uggh I just imagined a CalArts style series and vomited
>>87529245
But it's so efficient! Who wants to put unnecessary effort in animation?
>>87529512
Id happily take a cgi series over that
Chizu was right about Grasscutter
Jei got a kid sidekick
Kitsune got a kid sidekick
Now Usagi is walking around with Jotaru
This is turning into one of them 80s cartoons, but with Cho-han. And prostitutes.
>>87527680
Yeah, SMT sometimes makes creatures a lot uglier than usual. And sometimes it makes them hotter. Also good taste in games, anon.
>>87525872
>the voice
You know, it surprised me that his voice is so high and soft(?), I guess, in the Turtles cartoons. I honestly have no idea what he is supposed to sound like now. In my head he doesn't have a specific voice.
So I have to go with the anon in the other thread who suggested that both Usagi and the antagonist should be voiced by Jack Black.
>>87532871
In the 2003 series he had a much sterner voice and in the Space Usagi pilot he was Jim Cummings sounding like a pissed off Savage Dragon. I hear him as the more gentle till rattled kind of guy sort of like Kenshin.
I am way to drunk right now, it took me way to many tries to get that post right
>>87533050
I just looked up Space Usagi and what the hell. I feel like he's about to teach me math and then beat me up right after.
2003 Usagi sounds better but...too hammy, I guess? Is he doing a Brahmin accent? 'Ahre you alright, wahrrioh?'
To me he sounds like a japanese Jackie Chan.
>>87533380
>I don't want no trabble
Perfect.

>>87533459
>be 29
>dad never said he loved you
mfw
Usagi, Usagi buddy. Your sensei told you about keeping your sword sheathed. You got enough problems with just Jotaro.
>>87534386
Seeing how many women throw themselves at him, he shows amazing restraint.
I'm not sure I could deal with a Tomoe-pregnancy-drama. What even happened with samurai women who got pregnant without being married? Shot-gun marriage or were there more sinister repercussions?
OH, geez. I was not prepared for all these emotions.
>>87534615
She's already stepping on toes just by being a woman in her position. I can't imagine things going well for her unless Usagi stops wandering and does the right thing.
>>87534720
Ir really frustrates me how little panda lord can't see through all the manipulation around and and doesn't support her. They've gone on enough crazy adventures to know that Tomoe is trustworthy. Yet he still listens to his slimy advisors who are clearly dicks.
>>87534762
My opinion of him has been plummeting since this whole mess started.
>>87534931
Yeah, this is why you don't put children in charge.
