Paramount has been making a lot of questionable decisions and have lost a lot of money (even more so than Sony and WB). Ben-Hurr was a huge flop and lost them alot of money (bigger bomb than Tranktasic Four).

Maybe they are hoping if they buy this character by a comic book writer that they can get back in the game.
